finecam_mini.jpg image

Hoping to cash in on the iPod mini craze (and you know, I've heard more stupid ideas before), Kyocera is selling five new color-matched versions of the four-megapixel Finecam SL400R cameras. Color-matched, that is, to the iPod mini. And while I'm sure they'll be super hot (at least to those fashion-forward iPod adopters), getting one into the States may not be so easy -- the cameras will only be available in Apple's Ginza store and the online Apple Store (but for Japan-shipping only? Unknown!) (Thanks, Jon!)

It produces 4 x 6-inch full-size and multi-image picture sheets with its thermal printing system and can transfer pictures to a computer as well as recharge your camera's battery. Minimum system requirements call for Mac OS X v10.2.3. You'll be able to find the new printer dock on store shelves in June for US$149. Kodak's Web site lists July availability, but the company confirmed with MacCentral that most retailers will have it in June.

p_index_image_02a01.gif imageAlthough I'd certainly trade them for a single camera with twice the resolution, this A5502K from Kyocera is the first phone I can recall seeing with two cameras, one in the front like a normal, selfless, god-fearing camera, and another next to the LCD for taking vain, indulgent pictures of yourself. The other functions of the phone don't look half-bad either, although I wouldn't expect to see it in the US, you know, ever.

Win an iPod mini at the South Beach iPod Garage Party

What's cooler than hanging with your fellow iPod users on Miami's South Beach on September 1st? How about going home with a brand new iPod mini in your pocket?

Yeah, that probably got your attention. But thanks to event sponsors iPodResQ, the iPod mini is just one prize among many that we'll be giving away at the South Beach iPod Garage Party. So what do you have to do to win? All you have to do is show up with your iPod, connect it to our sound system, and play "DJ" for twelve minutes as you share the highlights of your own music library with the rest of us (as many songs as you like, as long as it fits within the time limit). Yep, it's your very own twelve minutes of fame.

On my way to Singapore... 12/17/2004 06:31 PM
I'm in the lovely lounge at the Newark Airport, waiting for my 19-hour flight to Singapore. But my client put me into business class which looks pretty spiffy, so I'm not complaining. Besides, I get to go to Singapore. I got here at 6pm from Boston, and waited until 7:15 for the Singapore Air counter to open. For half an hour, a crew of the young and beautiful (six women, two men ... and guess who was in charge! (Hint: He pees standing up)) put out poinsettias, stacked cards, and unrolled carpets, all without ever making eye contact with us....

I spent from 9-5 leading a workshop on "conversational marketing." Forty-three participants from a variety of industries. And, because irony is the basic law of the universe, I went on so long that I cut into the time we slated to spend in an Open Space exercise, facilitated by Edgar Tan, with Patrick Lambe in the wings. The Open Space went very, very well: Strangers engaged in open-ended, organically directed conversations. As for my long talky part, lord knows how it went. Now I'm going to meet James Seng for dinner. We've only met in the bit sense, so I'm...

I wanna go to Singapore 02/07/2005 01:51 AM

James Seng keeps making me feel like jumping on a plane and going to Singapore. He's now talking about SingAREN GIX - an Gigabit (Internet2-like) educational network.

That alone is a reason to go to Singapore - but there are many other projects where James is helping their government promulgate a wired distributed society. Perfect for DLAs.

I'll get there soon enough - James@!

Singapore overview

Singapore overview 12/19/2004 03:36 PM
Puhlease! I was there for three days. The only overview I'm entitled to was from the airplane when we took off, and on that basis I can report that Singapore is mainly cloudy. Now I'm back in the Newark airport, waiting for the flight to Boston. Is there a longer commercial flight than Singapore-Newark? I'm glad to be home, eager to see my family, and would love to find a way to go back to Singapore someday soon....

Ah, sleep! Amazing what a full night of it can do. For example, it turned my exhaustion into sleepiness. I work up early and re-wrote my presentation, as I inevitably do before a speech. I'm at the first International Conference on Knowledge Management, a truly international gathering of practitioners and academics. I, of course, am neither, so of course they had me keynote it. Nevertheless, it seemed to go well. I bugged out at 11 to see if I could see just a little more of the city. After a quick cab ride, I was in Little India, the streets...

Singapore noon 12/17/2004 06:31 PM
On the advice of my host, I took a taxi to the Indian Temple in Chinatown, a plain building crowned by a colorful pyramid of sculptures of gods. The streets around it are lined with little open-front shops selling tourist junk. After wandering in and out of dozens, I bought my son a present (he's reading this so I can't say what) and almost got the bargaining thing right: It was marked $8 (= US$4.80), I offered $5, she said $7, and I lost my nerve so we didn't complete the dance that was destined to end at $6. Morning in Singapore 12/17/2004 06:31 PM
Let's see. I left Boston on Sunday at 6, and flew from Newark, NJ at 11pm. They served dinner at 12:30 AM (rice and spinach because heaven knows we vegetarians don't like to combine elemental foodstuffs into interesting new creations) and I "slept" from 1:30-7:30AM. For some reason, they didn't serve breakfast until 1:30pm on Monday, then at 5:30pm on Monday we landed here, except that it was 6:30AM on Tuesday. I read the Sunday edition of a Singapore paper on the plane just to see what's up. There was almost no news about Singapore, except for the reality TV...

If you thought US laws to prevent spam were ineffective and misguided, this link should be amusing. Singapore is considering a 58 cent fine per spam email. No details on how that fine was reached or what the definition of spam will be, but if the Singaporean government can stop spam, no one will complain. However, spammers are a notoriously difficult lot to hunt down, and maybe especially so, if the threat of caning could be an option.

A robot may soon be helping doctors diagnose prostate problems and perform prostate biopsies according to a new News-Medical.net article. The new robot was jointed developed by Singapore General Hospital and Nanyang Technological University (NTU). In addition to assisting the doctor with diagnosis and biopsies, the robot can precisely place radioactive particles for use in treatment of prostate cancer.
