Family 03/19/2003 10:46 PM

A majority of my family is overweight, though none are obese. It's not something that's questioned, or swept under a rug out of embarassment or for acceptance; it is a part of us. When the family comes together on occassion to celebrate events (birthdays, usually), the food is both plentiful and delicious. Over the past couple of months I've lost weight, and am visually slimmer. My family is most concerned. They insist I'm pale and losing too much weight (although I am still somewhat overweight), and they adamently try to get me to eat everything on the table. Meanwhile, I feel great.

Why can't it stay 72 degrees outside? Tomorrow is supposed to be in the 40's again.

Rob on Family Reunification

Rob on Family Reunification 04/07/2005 01:05 PM
That would be my brother Robert Bray, who recently testified before a standing committee of the Canadian House of Commons. Canada has a parliamentary system, which means that when one party gets a majority they’re more or less an elected dictatorship; but at the moment we have a minority government, so Parliament in general and its committees in particular have considerable political oomph. Immigration is a hot issue across the rich world, and the issue of family reunification is a hot zone within the hot zone. If you care even slightly about these things, I think you’ll find Rob’s remarks worth the investment of a little time...

The Beecher Family

The Beecher Family 06/25/2004 06:53 AM
Th e Beecher Family. 'Families that have been influential in American life and culture are often recognizable by their signature names. The Beecher family is an example of one such family whose deep religious convictions and social conscience spanned the nineteenth century and made them prominent historical figures whose impact on religion, education, abolition, reform movements, literature and public life were exceptional. Biographer Milton Rugoff claims that in "two generations the Beechers emerged, along with many other Americans, from a God-centered, theology-ridden world concerned with the fate of man's eternal soul into a man-centered society occupied mainly with life on earth." ... Goodies From the Family

Goodies From the Family 06/24/2004 01:35 AM
I had a birthday a few days ago and the family was real good to me. A genuinely funny e-card from my mother-in-law (pretty good), an obscure DVD from the kid (quite good), and from my Mom, Jane Jacobs’ Dark Age Coming, highly literate doomsaying but, dig this, it came from Amazon. My Mom uses Amazon, is that cool or what? Then Lauren gave me a beautiful bird picture and—best of all—a pair of Shure 3C’s, the ultramodern way-in-your-ear headphones. This motivated me to go rip a couple of CDs with the new Apple lossless encoding; first to hand were Steve Earle’s Train a Comin’ and the k.d.lang/Tony Bennett Wonderful World collaboration. I’m writing this at 33,000 feet on the Airbus from Vancouver to San Fran, and I hear no airplane, just Steve and the band; raspy heartfelt harmony and sweet swinging strings, so tight they’re loose. (To everyone: Lossy compression of music is vandalism, i.e. MP3 is so over.) And I think to myself... what a wonderful world.
