In the Madrid airport this morning (or was it last night? Hard to get my biological clock rewound), I was aimlessly browsing in the duty-free shop and decided maybe I'd buy a bottle of wine. I sampled a bigger variety of wine in the past two days than I did during my twenties, thirties and half of my forties, and all of it was just delicious. I saw a bottle that looked familiar, and figured if I've had it in Madrid, it must be good. So, for 11 euros (about $14 in real money), I bought the bottle and carried...

Pompignan Wine

Photographs of this year’s harvest.

This marks a first for my friend Noël, at least as proprietor of his own cave (previous posts on the matter here and here), construction of which was just finishing as the grapes rolled in. The new winery still has no name, though that has more to do with the pleasures of navigating French bureaucracy than anything else.

Everyone seems to agree this was a good season, grape-juice-wise: very little disease in the vines hereabouts, and this year’s, um, diverse weather may have caused untold mayhem, but it was conducive to good plonk.

Most notable, of course, is that I got to ride the machine.

Raise a glass for Pat

Raise a glass for Pat 05/07/2004 03:28 AM

Leonard pulled the recent under the radar stuff about Pat Tillman into one nice post. I was impressed with Tillman's resolve and unselfishness in ditching sports for the military, but after reading the SFGate article he sounds like an interesting and very human person to boot. The funeral sounded like a perfect send-off, done the way he would have wanted it, and Ted Rall is an asshole for making a dark cynical joke of the guy's ultimate sacrifice.

This is why blogs are a good thing for the existing media - due to the language used at the funeral, no media outlet in america can carry it, and probably due to our religious sensibilities, the photo from the funeral is only running on an overseas news wire. So you can only get the rest of the story thanks to the millions of eyeballs scouring the net for interesting angles on what would otherwise be one-dimensional soundbites.

Self-Cleaning Glass

Self-Cleaning Glass 06/08/2004 09:07 AM

activ_glass.jpg LogoThey've been developing it for years, so it's good news to see that the Pilkington Activ glass -- the self-cleaning "eco glass" coated with a film of titanium dioxide -- is finally being put to use in commercial development. If you hadn't see it before, the Activ glass has two advantages over normal glass: the first is the photocatalytic effect that reacts to sunlight to break down organic dirt, and the second is an enhanced hydrophilic tendency of water running on the glass to form sheets instead of droplets (like Rain-X, for instance). The combination of the two effects means that every time it rains (as I hear it does a lot in UK, where the technology was developed), the outside of the windows clean themselves.

Project Looking Glass

Project Looking Glass 06/29/2004 05:19 PM

lookingglass.jpgSun Microsystems is releasing an early version of their Project Looking Glass desktop environment into the GPL.

What if windows were translucent so that you could see the multiple windows you're working on at the same time? What if you could tack a note to yourself right on the Web page you're viewing? What if your CD or movie database became a 3D jukebox, where titles were joined with images to make finding what you want easier than ever? [...]

Sun Microsystems' latest innovations by its Advanced Software Technology Team will make these "what-ifs" a reality for the desktop of the near future. Code-named Project Looking Glass, these Java technology-based developments will bring 3D windowing capabilities to the desktop to offer a far richer user experience for work and play. But, it's not only about looks, it's about creating an engaging user experience, one that can make communications and collaboration even easier.

It's basically Sun's spin on a 3D desktop environment. I remember seeing early previews of this at a JavaOne keynote a few years ago, and everyone definitely sat up and took notice. Even at that early stage, they had video playing in real time on a 3D object. It would be awesome to see some of this tech integrated into GNOME and KDE a few versions from now.

Through the Typing Glass

Through the Typing Glass 07/01/2004 12:22 PM

FacetopSo you thought the upcoming enhancements to iChat AV sounded cool? Wait until you see Facetop:

Facetop superimposes transparent images of a computer's desktop over video images of the user to allow the user to look at the video and desktop at the same time.

The video shows a ghostly mirror image of the user so that when he points, his video reflection appears to touch objects on the screen. The system tracks fingertip position in the video to allow the user to control the mouse pointer.

Essentially it looks like two users are working with a pane of glass containing the desktop between them. UNC is developing this technology as part of their research into software to aid in pair programming over a distance. Pretty cool. This is possible on OSX right now, but Windows folks will apparently need to wait for Longhorn for the neccesary support.

Dancing cock with condom

A random and unusual find on the front steps to our building. I was greatly amused by the thought of the apoplectic shock it would give most of the population of the US if it were found lying about. Billy Boy is a Red Bull clone only it includes a condom and features a bouncy, fruit juggling penis on the can. The BevNet Review was unsurprisingly negative. I can't wait to see all the Viagra 'energy drinks' once it goes OTC. "Boner" would be a perfect name for a Viagra soft drink. :)

Cory Doctorow: Love the taste, fussiness and brown teeth of tea-drinking, but don't have time to boil a kettle? No worries: tea in a pill!
Indian tea scientists have produced a tea-flavoured pill that can be chewed or quickly dissolved in hot or cold water.

The brownish tablet weighs 0.3 grams and consists of 80 percent tea and 20 percent other flavours -- a combination the inventors at the Tocklai tea research centre in Assam say peps you up just like a traditional cuppa.

"You can suck it, chew it or dissolve it in water the way you like to have it and still feel the taste of a real cup of tea," said the centre's director, Mridul Hazarika.

Social networking bingo

It’s a bit silly, but silly is good for the kind of Monday I’ve had today. First one to a full house shouts ‘foaf’.

Actually, I caught myself using foaf as real word in spoken conversation the other day, as in ‘Oh, he’s a foaf of mine’. I’m not sure, but I think that makes me very afraid. I bet it’ll be in the Oxford English Dictionary as a real word within the next two years…

[Strange Attractor]

Marc quips in....

It's just a term Suw. Like any other meme. It really doesn't matter what it is, just as long as the message gets across. Sure the term F-O-A-F is the wrong term for what a FOAdf file is.

And sure - it sounds allot like loaf, or stoaf or even goaf - but at least it's something.

At least it's something NOT OWNED by Microsoft, Apple or Sun.

At least it's starting to work - as evidence from our FOAFnet.org efforts will start showing up - real soon now.

Julian? Ellen? Paul? How's progress coming along?

Gonna be ready for Galway?
