CBS on "controversial"
CBS on "controversial"
02/10/2004 02:53 AM
A great
letter to the editor in
the Boston Globe re CBS' judgment about what sort of controvesy it
should keep its viewers from. The site is flakey, so here's the text:
CBS's failure in judgment
We Americans need to rethink whether CBS and its
parent company Viacom should continue to be
trusted to broadcast on our publicly owned airwaves.
First, CBS turned down an ad by MoveOn.org discussing
the budget deficit because it was too controversial
for the Super Bowl. Then it proceeded to air an
obscene halftime show produced by MTV. The show
included Nelly urging women to take off all their
clothes, and Janet Jackson performing with dancers
wearing leather fetish outfits and lingerie, and
then closing her performance by exposing her breast.
MTV's website promised on Jan. 28 that Jackson's
performance would include shocking moments, so it
is clear that this was planned.
CBS deliberately suppressed and censored political
speech and public discourse, the core reason
behind the First Amendment, yet saw fit to air
sexually exploitive performances during a family
event. We cannot tolerate such failures in
judgment.

Music Sales Haven't Really Dropped
Music Sales Haven't Really Dropped
05/13/2004 06:34 PMNew Media Musings points us to a week old article showing how
the RIAA fudges CD sales figures to show they're
dropping when they're actually increasing. It turns out that the
RIAA used numbers that only show CD
shipments to stores - and
not how many CDs were actually purchased. In other words, they're
using a number
they have some control over. However, back in
the real world, consumers are actually buying more CDs. Also, the
article notes that stores are realizing they don't need to carry as
much inventory, as they can go with more of a "just-in-time" supply
chain model. In other words, these fewer shipments also mean that the
industry is even
more profitable than before. The fact that
there are fewer shipments just means the industry has become more
efficient. Unfortunately, this doesn't fit with the RIAA's view of
the world, so they had to come up with a different method to maintain
the fiction that they're selling.

419 Scammer Charges Dropped
419 Scammer Charges Dropped
11/12/2003 03:18 PMLast week we had the story of how a woman who received a 419 Nigerian
scam email played along to try to track down the scammers. When
someone was sent to her to pick up the money,
he
was arrested. As was pointed out at the time, it sounds as though
this guy was just a courier and not the actual scammer - but, in
theory should be able to help authorities find the real scammers.
Instead, though,
they've
released him without any charges being filed - and without an
explanation. The woman who set up the sting is furious and claims
this is why such scams continue. Of course, if the guy really is just
the courier there probably isn't too much they can charge him with.
Even if they did charge him with some small crime for helping out, it
wouldn't do much to stop the scam anyway. Perhaps, in releasing him,
they're going to use him to get more information about the real
scammers.
