Lookout for Outlook

Lookout for Outlook 03/06/2004 01:59 AM

Lookout looks really cool. It's a plugin for Outlook that lets people search super fast on Windows machines and in Outlook files...

But I've got a problem with reading these comments by a Longhorn evangelist about how this product gives us a glimpes of what WinFS will bring to the Windows Operating System, not because it doesn't sound cool, but because it's sooo far away... When is Longhorn going to get released again?

I don't mean to be rude or too inciting here, and I welcome the introduction of Longhorn, but doesn't Mac OS X's Finder already have the equivalent of WinFS, or at least 'fast find'? I know it finds files on my computer at Googlespeed straight from the Finder. I didn't have to fork out the cash for Outlook, and I don't get viruses on OS X... I also have pretty damned fast finding features using Apple's Mail (which is free) and the email client I paid for (Mailsmith) has super-fast and truly featured search options. Outlook and Windows have both always sucked at searching...

I'll download and install Lookout tomorrow on the Dell... because I really could use a good way to search inside Outlook. Anything that makes Outlook useful (like Inbox Budddy) is good news to me.

And, yes, if I had my druthers, I'd use a Mac at work, but I don't get to have my druthers.

(And, I spotted a reference to X1 in the comments of the post from Jeff Maurone... I just might check that out too)

Lookout for Tiger's Logout

Lookout for Tiger's Logout 08/14/2004 09:48 AM
While the idea of shutting down — or even restarting — a Mac is a thought many never consider. With OS X, system crashes have become all but obsolete and, save the latest upgrade install, there"s no real reason to shut down. However, as any diligent tech janitor will tell you, a period cleaning will help ensure a healthy OS for years to come. And of course, all those switchers may have an overwhelming need to restart too. The speed and stability of OS X has brought new meaning to "working in the background," and just abut any task can be done in tandem with another — disc burning, permission repairing, cache emptying, etc. — and a user is likely to have five or six apps open whenever the urge to restart hits. So, when Apple cornered the fast-user switching market, I wondered when it would tackle the problem of actual logging out. With a few processor-intensive applications — like, say Photoshop QuarkXPress, Microsoft Word or even iMovie — quitting, saving and restarting can be a cumbersome task, one that can take upwards of two minutes and at times lends to a neverending spinning beach ball. According to AppleInsider, Tiger is going to <A HREF="http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=597">cha nge all that</A>. One of its 150 new features is reportedly utilizing "Fast Logout and Autosave" technology: "Tiger"s fast logout and autosave feature will improve logout, shutdown, and restart operations by reducing the number of confirmation dialogs presented to the user, all the while protecting the user"s unsaved data in open applications. "During a logout, shutdown, or restart operation, Tiger will determine whether an application should post a confirmation dialog for unsaved changes or perform an auto-save event. If the application performs an auto-save event, data will be saved to a special location on the system and the user will be logged out of Mac OS X. The next time the user logs in, the system relaunches each application with auto-saved documents and reconstructs the documents as their state immediately before the last logout." While it may not be immediately noticed by the masses, Fast Logout and Autosave looks to be one of those features that will change the way we think of shutting down — and offer one more reason for OS X users to gloat — after all, it"s the little things that <I>really</I> make the difference.

Chicago Surveillance Cameras On The
Lookout For Suspicious Behavior

Chicago Surveillance Cameras On The
Lookout For Suspicious Behavior
09/21/2004 12:29 PM
Remember that island in Maine that had security cameras and sensors designed to kick you off the island if you acted strange? Well, now take that concept and move it to a big city like Chicago. That's right, Chicago is putting surveillance cameras all over the city that are supposed to recognize potentially bad actions. Remember, we still haven't been able to create speedin g cameras that work right, and now we're going to trust these cameras to catch people acting strangely? Still, these days, it's become clear that surveillance cameras aren't going away, and with so many out there, this is being pitched as a reasonable solution to the problem of monitoring all those cameras (apparently Jay Walker's wireles s neighborhood watch idea isn't catching on). If that's the case, though, who's watchin g the watchers to make sure this technology isn't being abused?

ActiveWin reaches 7

ActiveWin reaches 7 04/22/2004 04:18 PM
Yes we have finally reached the 7 year birthday for ActiveWin. Although the first "Active" site we built was designed in August 1997, we actually started off in April 1997 with a small Internet Explorer desktop component gallery, which later became ActiveIE. We have also produced a number of other sites in the process before we (Bob and I) started ActiveWin in June 1998.

Coming up on ActiveWin

Coming up on ActiveWin 09/19/2004 11:38 AM
Here's another of our regular looks into what is on the way here at ActiveWin over the coming month: Firstly we have a number of new reviews on the way in the next couple of weeks. We have reviews of the ATI X800 Pro and NVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra Graphics cards. Reviews of the new Microsoft Keyboard with Fingerprint reader along with some of the other new hardware Microsoft announced the other week.

On the Xbox we have reviews of Outrun 2, Fable, Terminator: Redemption, Burnout 3, Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude, Star Wars: Battlefront along with many others.

So a big month for reviews on the way. We also have the opening of our Windows Mobile section for Smartphones, Pocket PCs and PocketPC Phones coming out this week.

Upcoming on ActiveWin

Upcoming on ActiveWin 08/27/2004 02:05 PM
We have a number of new bits and pieces on the way in the next month. Firstly we have a new section opening all about Windows Mobile, this will include new reviews of the brand new smartphone from Orange, the SPV C500. The section will also have editorials, FAQ's and more.

Early in September we are returning to some of the bigger style reviews that we used to post, first up is a review of the AMD 3800+ CPU. Next we have a review of the ATI X800 Pro Graphics card on the way too.

ActiveWin: Far Cry PC - Review 04/15/2004 11:48 AM
FarCry, PC Games, ShootersI have posted up my review of the UBI Soft/Cry Tek first person shooter - Far Cry released last month on the PC. Here is a snippet from the review:

Far Cry is a first person shooter. The first thing to mention is that the game has excellent AI, I can’t say that a game has had as good AI as this since Half Life, and that was released years ago. To give you an idea of the difference this game has compared to others, if you are creeping through the jungle, you can do so without the enemy knowing where you are without actually seeing you, the enemy rely on where they last saw you or where you have been heard. This is even better when you can throw rocks to put the enemy off of your tracks and have them running and looking in a different direction altogether.

ActiveWin: MSN Premium - Review 02/11/2004 11:00 AM
MSN PremiumI have posted up my review of the final version of MSN's Premium online service. Here is a snippet from the review:

The Microsoft Network is not aiming for advanced users, that is something we have to get out of the way first as a lot of reviews criticise it for being too childlike in appearance, MSN takes aim at families who want to get online and use the Internet with ease. MSN’s main rival over the years has been AOL, which continues to improve and do well even now with increased competition.

RSS 1.0 Plugin 03/11/2003 09:43 AM
It's always been a little odd, quite frankly, that Blosxom's not sported an RSS 1.0 flavour :-\ given my work in the RSS 1.0 space.

With a little Blosxom plug-in magic and a smattering of template flavouring, my weblog now sports a full-blown RSS 1.0 flavour featuring use of the content, trackback, and admin modules.

It was all just a matter of producing that ever-so-slighly-annoying <items /> sequence without building too much bloat into Blosxom itself.

MT Plugin Directory: ImageInfo: Movable Type plugins just keep getting better and better. Camera geeks rejoice (and by "camera geeks," I mean "Rob").

Display image EXIF data along with image on weblog page. Especially useful with digital camera pictures, which often store a lot of EXIF data (time stamp, f/stop, shutter speed, ISO setting, white balance, etc.) inside each picture.

If you have no idea what EXIF is, here's a site for you.

EXIF stands for Exchangeable Image File Format, and is a standard for storing interchange information in image files, especially those using JPEG compression. Most digital cameras now use the EXIF format.

Plugin Scriptability 07/02/2004 11:27 AM

One reader of my previous entry (in the trackbacks) expressed concern that only Dashboard widget apps could execute native code. Well, we have an answer to that as well. You see, we're working with other browser vendors to extend the plugin API to add scriptability. See this link for more information. This means you can obviously execute native code from within any WebKit application's Web pages through the use of scriptable plugins.

When I changed web server at the end of last month, I didn't have time to move non-blog related pages and files.  Until I do, I'll post on my blog whenever someone ask for them.

Today it was the Flash SWT Plugin which I wrote long time ago.  The plugin basically allows you to play Flash animation within SWT applications and tools.  Here is a screenshot.

There is really only one class you need to learn about: FlashPlayer. Below is a code snippet that will play a Flash movie.

GetXML Plugin for Movable Type: Ouch, this is a good plugin. There's no limit to what you can do with this.

This Movable Type plugin implements a set of template tags for retrieving data in XML format and displaying the data on your MT-generated pages. [...] The plugin will work with any well-formed XML document that can be retrieved via an HTTP GET request.

Connect a template with this stuff to the MT-Rebuild script and you could retrieve XML on a schedule, format it up into HTML, then include it all over your site, all with Movable Type. The utility of it is giving me a cramp.

MLTFO Plugin 12/16/2002 11:24 PM

David Raynes has written the MTMoreLifeThisFromOt hers plugin. I was totally geeked when it came out. But it doesn't work exactly how I was hoping, although it is still at version 0.1.

By every post I have created a pop-up window that has More Like This From Others for that particular entries Category. I wish that I could have done something without specifying <MTEntries category="MT Plugins">, but I guess that is my problem.

I don't get nearly enough TrackBacks. But if I did, this would definitely be very cool! :-) I have noticed that some TrackBack pings don't work, such as the one I have received from interalia.org. Maybe it has to do with the version of the RSS feed.

I hope that David Raynes comes out with version 0.2 that fixes some issues, and allows you to show the name of the Weblog the entry is from instead of just the name of the entry and the url.

I like being connected. It kind of makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
