Thanks to problems like identify theft, the U.K. is considering some pretty drastic methods to combat identity fraud. The U.K. has already published a draft bill that may mean better security for identification documents over the next few years. On the same note, many states in the U.S. are already requiring thumb prints on state issued drivers licenses. While some may believe that this is going to help detour identity fraud, I am willing to…

(Verdict: Big But Handy)

highgear_rev.jpgSea kayakers are a hearty breed, born of the sea and prone to yarring and yawping at storms. Whereas they once had to depend on arcane skills like "looking at clouds" and "watching the Weather Channel," the Summit watch's barometer allows them to tell when the storms are coming and even includes a digital compass and a little icon that tells you if it's going to be sunny or rainy. Plus it has a thermometer.

This review is aimed mostly at water sports enthusiasts but they've added just enough geekery to make it palatable to everyone.

Many automotive dealers have done a good job selling the new customer of a high security equipped car with the premise that the keys to the new purchase can only be made at the dealer!! In most cases high end locksmith facilities can not only duplicate but can program or reprogram the new keys for a owner at a substantially reduced price in comparison to a dealer. Two handy FireFox extensions 03/06/2004 02:01 AM

Just a quick plug for a couple of FireFox extensions I've been digging recently. Chris Pederick's Web Developer toolbar / menu extension combines ideas from a whole bunch of other extensions and bookmarklets in to one extremely useful whole. The usual assortment of validation and element outlining options are present, but the really useful tools are "View Cookie Information" and "View Response Headers". I've used separate extensions for these before but it's handy to have them all in one package.

The second is something which really should be built in to every browser: Clear HTTP Auth, which lets you log out of HTTP authenticated sites without having to close all your browser windows.

Colossal surveillance network shields Olympics: Here's a fascinating article on the stunning level of technical surveillance and security in Athens during the Olympics.

This network collects and processes images and audio from more than 1,000 high-resolution and infrared cameras installed at different venues and on street corners. Calls made from mobile and landline phones in the area will be recorded and processed by the system.

Using software provided by UK company Autonomy, conversations can be converted into text and scanned for phrases that could be linked to terrorist activity.

[...] other undisclosed measures are undoubtedly in place, such as face recognition from video footage.

I was interesting to see Autonomy in there. At a previous job, I investigated their Bayesian search technology for an intranet. Via Boing Boing.

High security is low security

High security is low security 11/15/2003 04:34 PM

Via Crypto-Gram, a great piece from Bruce Tognazzini about how tough security measures can actively reduce the security of a system:

My wife, the Doctor, was working over the summer at a local hospital. They are fiercely into security, requiring no fewer than four sets of passwords to navigate their system. And why not? There are confidential patient records on those systems! By golly, they ought to have eight sets of passwords, and really make things secure!

So works the mind of a D'ohLTish security engineer, working feverishly away in his cubicle in the basement next to the steam plant.

Take him out for a walk. Let him see the sunshine for the first time in years. Introduce him to some normal human beings. Be gentle at first; these are creatures with whom he has had no contact since being sucked into the depths of the university system.

Then, when his pallor begins to fade and he begins to take on signs of socialization, take him into the offices in the hospital and let him see the four sets of user names and password clinging to the monitors on yellow stickies (e. g., Post-It Notes) or, for the more security-minded, slid into the top drawer where no one would think to look.
