For some time now reports have been coming in that Microsoft was going to get serious about sender ID checks for email. The belief is that this will put a big damper on the continuing spam problem. Well, it appears that they have started to take some initiative by asking Internet service providers (ISPs) to publish Sender Policy Framework (SPF) records. This will identify their e-mail servers in the domain name system. If the whole…

Microsoft turns to automatic code checks

Microsoft turns to automatic code checks 05/27/2004 07:54 AM
A technology called static source code checkers was so helpful in eliminating Windows bugs that Microsoft bought the company. When Microsoft needed help in taming the large number of flaws that had crept into its Windows operating system, it looked to technology known as "static source code checkers" and a company called Intrinsa. Intrinsa's product, known as PREfix, analysed the code created by developers and flagged potential errors. The software giant found the program so helpful that it bought the company for $60m (£32.9m) in 1999. Today, a handful of other developers of similar products hope to convince customers that they should be using their programs to spot-check security.

NewsForge recently learned of some behind the scene negotiations between Microsoft and Larry Rosen of the Open Source Initiative (OSI) regarding its controversial licensing of Sender ID. I had the chance to speak briefly this morning with Rosen about those negotiations. He quickly brushed aside a couple of my misconceptions about the issues, and about prior art, then further enlightened me with his first-hand take on these ongoing-negotiations.

The Exchange Server Best Practices Analyzer encodes the top Microsoft Exchange Server product support issues and resolutions into a software tool that can be run as part of an automated network "health check" or a troubleshooting test to identify and diagnose configuration problems in the network. The no-cost tool helps customers to more easily manage and maximize performance in existing Exchange deployments.

Ohio Pushing Law To Enforce Library
Filters
11/12/2003 01:33 PM
Apparently state politicians in Ohio are proposing a new law that would require libraries to use internet filters if they want to receive state money. Do the politicians in Ohio not realize that there's already a similar federal law that the Supreme Court has upheld? In other words, isn't this a bit redundant? More importantly, why isn't it up to the library themselves to decide what's appropriate for their patrons?

Define Spyware Or Just Enforce Existing
Laws?
09/13/2004 09:56 PM
The question over exactly how spyware should be defined isn't exactly new. However, Mark Rasch's latest column at SecurityFocus picks apart common spyware definitions to make you wonder if it's useful at all to define what spyware is. Instead, he suggests (as have others before< /a>) that the real issue isn't in defining and outlawing spyware, but simply enforcing existing laws that already make most of the worst offenders illegal by way of laws against fraud. Of course, that won't happen, because politicians want to make sure they're seen as doing something to make their constituents' lives better -- and a law against spyware (just like the mostly useless law against spam before it) is good for publicity, even if it does little to solve any real problems.
