Force Companies To Give Free Tech
Support For Life
12/22/2003 12:42 PMLast week we talked about one idea to improve computer security
issues:
threa
ten to put executives of software companies in jail if their
products are not secure. That seemed a bit extreme. This week,
however, the Washington Post's Rob Pegoraro has another interesting
idea to improve technology product quality:
require companies to provide free tech support for
life. This way, he argues, the companies will quickly learn about
problems, and it will be in their own best interest to get working
fixes out there as quickly as possible. It will also give them
incentive to do things better the first time around. He argues this
is beneficial to the companies as well, as with better products,
people will be more willing to spend money on them. I would add one
adjustment to this suggestion: make an exception for companies or
individuals who give away software for free. This would make it so
anyone shopping for software can get a real benefit for paying for a
product, and also doesn't unfairly burden those who prefer to just
give away software.

04/09/2004 04:05 PMI spent the day Thursday at StarOffice in Hamburg and came away with
some of my ideas about XML & blogging changed. It was a side-trip;
other business took me to Brussels and OpenOffice wasn’t that far
away and I had an agenda there, which we’ll get to. But this is
important stuff, I think.

Using OpenOffice
04/18/2004 09:51 AMIt's possible to ditch Microsoft Office: I
actually used OpenOffice (used as opposed to played
with, which I've done a number of times) the other day to write a
document. It was fantastic. In many respects, better than Word.
I'll admit that a lot of my desire to use Linux and other software
alternatives is just to be counter-culture. Not so in this case.
OpenOffice is not only a legitimate alternative to the old guard that
is Microsoft Office, it may be better. Look for a day where people
struggle to justify why they're using Microsoft Office and not the
alternative.
Is today's OpenOffice good enough for the enterprise? For
most jobs — word processing, presentations or spreadsheets
— the answer is yes. Compatibility with Microsoft Office isn't a
problem unless sophisticated macros are involved. Interoperability,
the greatest hurdle to conquer on the way to adoption, is almost a
nonissue. OpenOffice even offers features missing in Microsoft Office,
like PDF or Flash data exports.
