JVC Develops DVD-RW DL
JVC Develops DVD-RW DL
04/04/2005 10:45 AM
JVC has announced they have finally gotten around
to developing dual layered DVD-RW discs (DVD-RW DL). Dual layered, for
those of you that missed it, is slapping two data layers on a DVD
— in the recordable disc world, this allows for 8.5GB of space
versus the conventional 4.7GB.
Anyway, I could get all technical and explain how this works, but
do you really care? DVD-R DL discs are already expensive enough; you
could probably buy a whole spindle of vanilla DVD-Rs for what it costs
to get a single DVD-RW DL. Not that pricing has been announced or
anything.

G5 develops sudden insomnia
08/19/2004 01:53 AMIt has been a long time since Apple made a little oops in the software
update process. Since the last update-round (presumably OSX 10.3.5) a
lot of single processor G5's have trouble sleeping, and so do their
owners. In an Apple forum almost
150 complaints have accumulated about this issue. Put
the Mac to sleep, the HD spins down, the screen goes black, but the
fans keep running. Sofar the only "feedback" from Apple has been a not
very helpful
info
doc.
Hopefully they didn't go home for the weekend before trying to solve
this one....

12/28/2004 11:10 AMJVC has developed prototype read-only discs that can contain data
stored in both the DVD and high-capacity Blu-ray Disc formats. They
are the first discs that are able to contain data in both formats, a
company spokesperson says. The discs contain three layers. The upper
layer is a Blu-ray Disc layer with a capacity of 25GB. Below are two
DVD layers with a combined capacity of 8.5GB, JVC says.
The company has not decided yet when the technology will be
commercialized but JVC may produce the discs, says company
spokesperson Fusako Adachi.
