Free open WiFi on Tacoma-Washington

03/24/2005 08:15 PMCory Doctorow:
A Seattle wireless hacker rides a commuter train from Tacoma every day
with a battery-powered WiFi hotspot in his backpack that's linked up
to the Internet with a
14.4 144k wireless modem. Catch his
train and get free WiFi on your commute.
The open wireless node can be found in the first car of the last
morning train and in Car 403 on the 5:10pm return trip. Use SSID
"FreeInternetAccess" or "seattlewireless" to connect - You may have to
assign yourself an IP in the range 192.168.0.0/24 and use the Default
Gateway 192.168.0.1 as the DHCP is sometimes flakey

Review: WiFi Seeker / WiFi Spy
Review: WiFi Seeker / WiFi Spy
07/16/2004 04:50 PMA few weeks ago I got Chrisalis Developemnt's
WiFi Seeker, a convenient
keychain-sized wireless network locator. Marware's recently announced
WiFi Spy is a
rebranded version of the same device, so it should perform
identically.
To locate a wireless network simply press the button and watch the
LEDs. When the lights stop sweeping back and forth, the number that
remain lit will show the strength of the wireless signal. If the
lights continue to sweep back and forth, you're not in range for any
wireless network. Unlike other devices, the WiFi Seeker isn't fooled
by other 2.5 GHz signals like microwave ovens or cordless phones, and
it doesn't depend on 802.11 client activity to detect the access
point. It detects both 802.11b and 802.11g.

Gadget Madness reviews the Talking Toonies Handsfree
Teddy Bear, a Teddy Ruxpin-like device that for $45 turns your
cell phone into an anthropomorphous Bad Trip Bear. But before you
shell out the cheddz to make the Toonie Bear your own, be sure to
doublecheck that your phone is supported -- not all are. After that,
though, you're golden. It even had "nice soft plush 'fur' and had a
sturdy feel," they say (and don't forget the moving mouth that
you control). You could, you know, get to know each other.

An Appeal by 365 Korean Organizations to
the Iraqi Group Holding a Korean
National
06/21/2004 04:29 AM
Following open letter is from an
OhmyNews article that encouraged wide distribution. I
don't agree with the
content but I think the letter reflects the view of a small yet
growing and increasingly
vocal part of Korean population so here it is:
An Appeal by 365 Korean Organizations to the Iraqi Group
Holding a Korean
National
We appeal for the release of the Korean national Kim Seon
Il.
Today the Korean people were overcome with shock at the news the
Korean Kim Seon Il
has been kidnapped in Iraq. His seizure and the threat against the
life of this private
citizen is already a source of unspeakable sadness for his family
and the Korean people.
This sadness and shock is the same for the many Koreans who have
opposed the United
States' unjust invasion and the deployment of Korean troops to
Iraq.
The Korean people are well aware of the fact that the US invaded
Iraq for domination
and oil, and not for the freedom and peace of the Iraqi people. We
know also that
the US occupation of Iraq has denied the Iraqi people their
sovereignty and that there
have been widespread human rights abuses by US forces there,
leading to Iraqi pain
and loss of life. For this reason we have done all that is humanly
possible to prevent
the deployment of Korean troops, as they will in no way contribute
to the peace and
security of the Iraqi people.
The kidnapping and threatening a private citizen with death,
however, will not contribute
to Iraqi peace. The Iraqi people are right to resist the US's
unjust invasion, occupation,
and carnage. Nevertheless, kidnapping and threatening a private
citizen with death
cannot be justified. Doing so will only lead to a vicious cycle of
blood and revenge.
Again we make an earnest appeal. Please make your claims known
through dialogue and
release Kim Seon Il to his family as he is of no relation to
government policy.

Could I love MoCoLoCo any more than I
already do? Apparently, yes, I could, because they keep finding and
profiling great things like this ASP Space Aquarium, a gorgeous
aquarium that "eliminates the awkward edges and angles associated with
conventional aquariums." They don't have a website up with prices (or
a website, you know, at all), but considering how much regular,
rectangular tanks go for, we're probably talking a lot of scratch --
and that's before the thousands of dollars of live rock and fragile,
disease-laden fish. (Thanks, Erik!)

Deep-fried megacalorie snack: "most
dangerous food in Britain"
08/10/2004 12:46 PMA new deep-fried Scottish delicacy has created a miniature moral panic
among the UK's diet-cops.
"The Stonner", a 1,000-calorie, deep fried pork sausage kebab has been
dubbed the most dangerous fast food in Britain.
Sky News reported Monday the kebab contains 46 grams of fat and is
double the calories of a Big Mac hamburger.
However, the Ruby Chip Shop in Glasgow, Scotland, that sells the kebab
has provided a health warning to customers: "Due to the severe health
damage of this fine dish, we can only supply one Stonner supper per
customer per week," reads the sign provided by the restaurant's owner,
Saei Sangag.

Update: Kevin sez, "As a chemistry student,
I’ve noticed many people mistake 'calories' (used in small-scale
scientific calculations) and “Calories” (kilocalories;
1000-calories). A 12-ounce can of Coca-Cola contains 140 Calories or
140,000 calories. This sausage you speak of therefore contains one
MILLION calories. Holy crap that’s unhealthy."
