Slide Rule Still Rules

Slide Rule Still Rules 09/08/2004 05:03 AM
Decades have passed since the pocket calculator relegated the trusty slide rule to near obscurity. Now, an exhibit celebrates the lengthy history of the device, featuring the slide rules of celebrity geeks. By Michelle Delio.

Slide Rules 4 Lyfe 09/21/2004 10:38 AM

alleman-sliderule_f.jpg imageI'll be honest, I have no idea how to use a slide rule. But I've always found them to be very intriguing, mostly because they look very complicated, and I have a soft spot for the trappings of geekery, even if it's in the most superficial, vicarious way. So when I saw this story on Wired, along with this picture of a permanent exhibit at Purdue showcasing over 200 slide rules, including this oversized comedy slide rule (as featured in the world's most tedious vaudeville act ever)... well, you didn't need a calculator to determine my logarithm, I'm saying.

Never made a slide show before

Never made a slide show before 09/25/2004 03:43 PM
Somehow I made it to the advanced age of __ without ever having made a slide show. I’ve never actually used PowerPoint or anything like that.

I just installed Keynote so I can create slides for my presentation at the OS X conference.

I’ve seen a bunch of slide show presentations, and I’ve sometimes thought, “Hey, I could do better than this.” But now I have to actually do it.

The topic is embedded HTML/browsing and the user interface challenges it brings up. Some of it comes from the experience I had bringing browsing to NetNewsWire, but it will also look at other apps (other newsreaders, iTunes Music Store, mail apps, weblog editors, text editors, and so on).

(Ironically, my favorite example of embedded HTML is Mailsmi th. It just doesn’t do it. And that’s one of the big reasons I use it. For me, it’s 99% true that if it’s HTML email, it’s spam. That won’t be true for everybody, of course.)

If you have any comments—such as that you love SubEthaEdit’s HTML preview because x or you think NetNewsWire’s browser would be better if y or you wish the iTunes Music Store also did z—I’d love to hear about it. Put on your user interface hat.

To be clear, the topic is not browsers, it’s everything that displays HTML except for browsers.

Starting the long slide to
standardization

Starting the long slide to
standardization
06/14/2004 11:28 AM
It's bound to happen, but it's something that almost nobody working on a new project wants to deal with -- standardization. Or productization, or some other -ization, of which there are far too many. But it's that point at which you need to look at things and decide that things have gotten large enough that it's time to say "This Will Not Change" and be done with it. It's got to be done, of course, if you ever want a project to move past the toy stage. Parrot's been doing this in fits and starts as we go along, though...

Are Encyclopedias The Slide Rules Of The
Internet Age?

Are Encyclopedias The Slide Rules Of The
Internet Age?
03/08/2004 11:04 PM
Growing up, we had a set of Collier's Encyclopedia's stored on a bookshelf in the basement - which was tremendously useful to be in looking up information for school reports. While I haven't paid much attention to encyclopedias for years, it comes as no surprise to find out that the encyclopedia business is struggling to remain relevant. The big sets of books have pretty much lost all interest to consumers, who know there's a big internet out there of information. While even CD-ROM based encyclopedias did well for a few years, they've also lost out to the internet. The surviving encyclopedia companies are still trying to figure out how to make online information pay - and they're having just as much trouble convincing users why they should bother to use an encyclopedia, rather than just use the entire internet and a search engine as their encyclopedia of choice. Of course, the information in an encyclopedia is professionally edited and much more likely to be accurate. However, for many people, that's not enough to make it worth paying for. I'm also surprised that an article on changes in the encyclopedia business can completely ignore the impact that things like Wikipedia are having on the business as well. The standard pricing refrain applies: if you want to supply something online, understanding the competitive situation is very important. If others can provide a product that is just as good for most users' needs for free, you're going to have a lot of difficulty convincing anyone to pay for it.
