Metropolitan Library System Officially
Opens for Business
07/05/2004 12:52 AM

When I left work today, I left the Suburban Library System. When I go back to work in the morning, I'll be going to the Metropolitan Library System, and while it's been kind of crazy lately getting ready for the merger, there is also much to look forward to.

For example, starting tomorrow, I get 300+ new libraries as members of "my" Library System, and some of them are pretty cool libraries. There are also some very interesting ones in the mix, too. Here are just a few examples of the new libraries with whom I could potentially work.

  • American Library Association
  • American Medical Association
  • Art Institute of Chicago
  • Chicago Children's Choir
  • Chicago Historical Society
  • Chicago Mercantile Exchange
  • Chicago Public Schools
  • Chicago Sun-Times
  • Chicago Tribune - Marketing Library
  • Chicago Urban League
  • Encyclopedia Brittanica, Inc.
  • Gerber/Hart Library & Archives
  • John G. Shedd Aquarium
  • Leather Archives & Museum
  • Leo Burnett Co., Inc.
  • MacArthur Foundation
  • Museum of Broadcast Communications
  • Newberry Library
  • Ogilvy & Mather
  • Old Town School of Folk Music
  • Playboy Enterprises, Inc.
  • Prevention First, Inc.
  • Pritzker Military Library
  • Quaker Oats Company
  • Terra Museum of American Art
  • U.S. Department of Justice
  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
  • World Book Publishing

Plus a ton o' academic libraries. Talk about opportunities for partnerships! The potential for interactions is quite intriguing. For example, look at the last name on that list - World Book Publishing. They're sending someone to my RSS class this month.

Yes, this will definitely be an interesting year!

In “The Virtue of Selfishness”, Ayn Rand wrote:

Ethics is not a mystic fantasy—nor a social convention—nor a dispensable, subjective luxury. ... Ethics is an objective necessity of man’s survival—not by the grace of the supernatural nor of your neighbors nor of your whims, but by the grace of reality and the nature of life.

Scientists Take Stock of Their Ethics 03/28/2005 03:54 AM
Taking the old adage, invest in what you know; it would be logical to assume that those working in the life sciences would gravitate toward financial investments in the health care sector. This is not to say that “insider knowledge” is the motivating factor, but rather that if one is a scientist, one has a natural affinity for science and hence might favor “science-related” stocks. CyberJournalist.net has created a model Bloggers' Code of Ethics, by modifying the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics for the Weblog world. These are just guidelines -- in the end it is up to individual bloggers to choose their own best practices. CyberJournalist.net follows this code and urges other Weblogs to adopt this one or similar practices. Integrity is the cornerstone of credibility. Bloggers who adopt this code of principles and these standards of practice not only practice ethical publishing, but convey to their readers that they can be trusted. Ido Kenan, NRG Maariv has filed a story about Google's ethics committee. He sent us this translation: Google has an ethics committee for decisions on changes to their algorithms. The committee is comprised of Google workers "who are concerned about ethics", said Dr. Eran Gabber, a software engineer with Google, at a lecture yesterday (Monday) at the Tel Aviv University. Dr. Gabber came to Israel to recruit Computer Science students for an annual Google project, where 100 students from around the world are invited to work at Google for a 12-week period during the summer. Dr. Gabber said: "We change Pagerank when we find that spammers are abusing it, but we don't change it often. There's an internal ethics committee in Google. Internally, there are people who are concerned about ethics. In Google, there are a lot of people who find ethics important". There are photos at the original article (in Hebrew). Cory Doctorow: Andre sez, "You mentioned the Government Printing Office (GPO) in an entry about applying DRM to government documents. Well, my associate Domingo and I have been on to the GPO for a while now - they have a listerv that has some suspicious stuff, such as the OGE-ETHICSINFO-L list which gives ethical advice to the executive branch, and requires you have a .gov or .mil e-mail address to join and remain a member of the list. I joined the list and dumped the contents using wget in August, and turned up some interesting stuff, such as 20040419.txt, which advises the executive branch to turn down gifts from Microsoft. We filed a FOIA request with the GPO for info on their mailing list and are awaiting a response."
It has come to OGE's attention that Microsoft Corp. is offering free promotional software valued at over $500 to IT personnel at various agencies. OGE has written Microsoft asking it to refrain from doing this, citing the implications associated with the Standards of Ethical Conduct for Employees of the Executive Branch. We understand that the Department of the Army also has sent a letter to Microsoft asking that these gifts cease. Please advise your IT personnel that they are prohibited from personally accepting these gifts. However, OGE does recognize that an agency may have gift acceptance authority that allows acceptance of this software by the agency for its use.

Update: Daniel sez, "Using a quick google search using the term: "inurl:listserv.*.gov" i found a hell of a lot more (54k hits). some intresting stuff on there, weird what you can find on goverment sites. Some mailman ones as well.

What You Get Is What You CSS, With Style

    Matt Neuburg (~320 words)

Western Civilisation's flagship product, Style Master, is a CSS editor. You don't use it to create Web pages; you use it to create the look of Web pages - the font, size, color, and layout of the various elements that constitute your Web pages, as dictated though a CSS "style sheet." Style Master is my ideal of a program that knows a big complicated language so that you don't have to; you do see the actual CSS, but you can interact with it through pop-up menus and checkboxes that list the appropriate options and generate the correct syntax.

    Creating Websites With Style Master

Creating Websites With Style Master 04/05/2005 04:59 PM

Although I've designed websites for years, I never enjoyed working with CSS style sheets. Whenever I could, I used tables or layers and avoided CSS like the plague. Along the way there have been a few CSS editors I tried but there was nothing I found that made working with style sheets any easier. Along came the new <a href="http://www.westc iv.com/style_master/index.html" target="_blank">Style Master 4</a> from Westciv and I am actually editing and designing style sheets.<p>

One of the reasons I decided to look at Style Master was the fact it's cross platformed. You can work in the Windows version  and when you switch over to the Mac, you can work in Style Master for the Mac. It's a $59.99 program in either the Mac or the PC version, but we'll get to that a little later. The reason you need to purchase Style Master 4 is because it will allow you to edit and design style sheets even if you never looked at a style sheet in your life. Well maybe you have to understand computer basics, but if you're new to designing style sheets, you've got to have Style Master. If you know CSS and need a good hand editor, Style Master can do that, but where it really shines is in it's design mode. You will be able to view the webpage your editing, click on any part of the webpage and see the CSS code associated with it. All this in a WYSIWYG view with color pickers and wizards, templates, and browser previews to allow you instant gratification.<p>

A little over a year ago I started a little Master Replicas case project, trying to fill in the void they created by not offering cases for the Darth Maul saber and Jedi Training Remote replicas. What was first going to be 10 cases for fellow collectors in the forum ended up being hundreds of cases made by the same company that does them for Master Replicas. As such, the fit and finish is identical to the second generation and currently shipping cases. I've shipped all the committed cases and still have a few left. If you happen to have missed this offer, you can still get them here.

    Master and Commander

Master and Commander 01/18/2004 04:54 AM

I am a big fan of historic novels and, British naval action stories in particular.  For heart thumping action, you can't get better than them.  Apparently Tim Bray is the same.  Check out his clamoring review of Master and Commander, the movie.  I haven't seen it yet but I am itching to.

Like Tim, I heartily recommend that you read rest of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series.  You will be better off borrowing the books from your local library because each book cost around $15.  Frankly, I liked C.S. Forester's Hornblower series better.

The only problem with these wonderful historic novels is they are expensive.  I must have spent more than a thousand dollars to get Aubrey-Maturin, C.S. Forester, Dorothy Dunnett, etc.  Vivid lingering images are worth it though, far stronger than other types of books including fantasy and SF.

    Big furry baby

« The patient in recovery is unable to keep from fiddling with his bandages and is made to wear a t-shirt to keep him from damaging them. It looks more dignified than a cone, but makes him look goofy anyway. :) »

Given how the week has gone, including getting trapped in the lift that goes down to the machine room bunker at least 4 times, and that tomorrow is Friday the 13th I am considering staying at home and hiding under my bed with a book and a bottle of whisky. :)

Jarkko showed me a hilarious trailer for Star Wreck V: The Pirkinning tonight which made me try to think of how many space or sci-fi Finnish movies there are and I couldn't think of any. I thought the lack was somewhat curious. As the title might suggest, Star Wreck is a series that features characters with names that are fun to say, like Mr. Fukov.

We finally took Otava in for an x-ray after his limp continued and settled in on one leg. The x-rays showed that his hips are very good but that the elbow on the gimpy leg had an inflammation due to a thickening of the cartilage, a.k.a. Osteochondrit is dissecans or OD, on the surface of the joint part of which breaks off and causes pain in the joint. The vet took him into surgery straightaway, removed the offending bit of cartilage and reported that the joint looked very good otherwise and that he should recover nicely.

He was awfully groggy when we went to pick him up and the vet seemed to think that he could gimp the few blocks home without a problem, but after about 20 metres he sat down clearly zoned out of his gourd, and drooled so we called a taxi to rescue us. As soon as he came through the door at home he flopped down in the hallway and I sat next to him and read a book for a few hours until he woke up and whined at me. I didn't want him to come out of the anesthesia alone since the last thing he knew we were sitting in the vet's office while he was thinking about food, sex or sleep. The vet suggested that we put a t-shirt on him if he started trying to lick or chew at his dressings and this provided at least an hour of comedy between getting the shirt on, giggling at how he looked in it and the amazing amount of attention he seemed to attract while walking him in the shirt. :)

In spite of his surgery, he is beyond eager to go to the park and play with his pals and exhibits an extreme amount of stubbornness when that singular goal is not achieved. He is all Missouri mule when it comes down to the battle of leaving the park. It's going to be a long month of petulant stubborn puppy while his joint heals.
