Review: Today, you can buy two variants of the Athlon 64 processor 3500+. One is built using AMD's older 130nm process, the other manufactured on 90nm. Do these make a real-world difference? We take some thermal readings, and speculate on why you can't buy faster Athlon 64's on 90nm.

FCC allows mix-and-match antennae

FCC allows mix-and-match antennae 07/23/2004 12:48 PM
The FCC has a new and somewhat baroque regulation that legalizes plugging aftermarket antennae into your WiFi access-points. In a long post on WiFiNetNews, Glenn Fleishman takes apart the new regulation and explains in admirably.
The FCC rule doesn’t suddenly make all antennas legal for all systems. Instead, they have chosen a clever middle ground. For new devices—or, presumably for recertification of old devices—manufacturers will be allowed to test the system with high-gain antennas of each major type, like omni, patch, yagi, and so forth. Once the device is certified, the manufacturer can release the characteristics of the antennas they tested for both their in-band and out-of-band signal patterns and strengths. (Out-of-band transmissions are the inevitable but not intentional frequencies that are broadcast on at typically very low levels due to harmonics and other technical radio issues.)

Indicthreads: Can Java CMS Match the PHP
Ones?
03/23/2005 10:33 AM
Let's face the facts - there are just too many PHP CMSes out there for people to choose from. Half of them are too big and bloated to really be of any use (you know who you are) and the other half seem to be more half-finished projects than anything else. Yes, there are some shining stars out there, but they seem few and far between. Thankfully, the overall quality of the PHP CMSes seems to be higher (in popular opinion) than a Java Content Management System - and this thread from indicthreads.com gives some of those reasons.

Christopher Allen on Social Network Services…

Posted Jan 11, 2004, 11:11 PM ET by Judith Meskill

Christopher Allen, founder of Alacrity Ventures, an angel capital investment firm, writes a two part series in his weblog — Evaluating Social Network Services and Followup to “Evaluating Social Network Services”……… — on the accounts he has created with Ryze, Tribe.Net, LinkedIn, and Friendster. Chris reflects, on what works and what doesn’t work for him with each of these services. He concludes his first post with a description of what he feels would be “The Perfect Social Networking Service”:

My ideal service would have the the multiple professional affiliation features of LinkedIn, but also allow me to show non-professional affilations. It would allow me to form intentional communities like Tribes.Net, but would also let me do a Wiki in addition to a message board. It would have meeting/party invite services like eVite, and blogging features like LiveJournal. It would have an endorsement system like LinkedIn integrated not only with professional endorsements, but personal endorsements as well, and you could even endorse intentional communities. It would let me better map and control my network, giving different friends different privileges. It would handle the release of my personal information like Ryse, but less clunky.

What would your “Perfect Social Networking Service” look like?

 [The Social Software Weblog]

The game of mix and match social network features has started.

Perhaps some VC will fund a 'social networking' reality TV show - where three young entreprenuers (one blond hottie, one husky Cowboy type and a dorky black guy) will star and launch their OWN social network - as defined by Chris Allen (yes - you're right, it'll probably be FUNDED by Chris Allen.)
