Garden-in-a-Bag

Garden-in-a-Bag 06/06/2005 12:09 AM

bag_basil.jpgNow it doesn't get much easier than growing fresh herbs, but I still totally dig these 'Garden-in-a-Bag' kits from Wishing Fish, which provide the dirt, nutrients, and seeds you need to grow herbs and plants right out of the packaging. Pop them open and add water and it won't be long before you have a believable excuse about why your entire office smells like chives.

One of our products at Google has updated today: Blogger. The news that will cover Blogger's update may not include "accelerated pearl farming and culturing" - but I'd like to think it could. What?...that's silly. Yeah, of course, but I can explain: Divers searching for marine pearls have had to overcome habitat dangers to farm a random distribution of oysters and manual ...

Garden ahoy!

Garden ahoy! 04/09/2004 04:06 PM

The Bountiful
ContainerOne bitterly cold weekend day in January, I sat on my bed with McGee & Stuckey's Bountiful Container at my side and began sketching my plans for this year's fire escape garden. The goals: everything (or nearly everything) would be edible so I could cook with it; good smelly flowers, so cuttings could be brought indoors; and hardier specimens, such as a lavender that's hardy to 0° so many plants will (hopefully) survive the winter. Yesterday, I reworked some plans and placed orders. And during a scouting expedition to the garden center, I purchased a pink primrose. It now sits on my windowsill, harkening spring.

You too can begin your garden now (where now equals planning and ordering but not necessarily planting since I don't know where you live and what you're planting!), and I cannot recommend the Bountiful Container more strongly. This book has proved so useful time and time again, and I constantly return to its pages for the handholding that I, a novice green thumb, require.

Garden Sheds. Why is it when men reach a certain age they get a hankering after a garden shed, somewhere they can escape to, to potter or mend things or just smoke and read? Well I'm glad it's not just me. And is this a particularly British thing?

Garden State's R-rating

Garden State's R-rating 08/19/2004 02:57 PM
Zach Braff has a weblog about Garden State (imdb): Some of you have been asking about the rating. Just so you all know, your government doesn't believe a 16 year old should hear the word "fuck" more than twice in a 2 hour period. The second you say "fuck" twice in a movie your film becomes "R". No exceptions. Pretty crazy, huh? You can blow someone's head off, but 2 fucks makes you unwatchable for someone under 17. Unless they...

Preparing for the Winter Garden

Preparing for the Winter Garden 10/29/2003 12:10 AM
Elliot Coleman is a farmer and gardener on the coast of Maine. He wrote Four-Season Harvest, a lovely and remarkable book about year-round gardening in snowy climates. (You definitely want to look at the drawings.) Even in the middle of January, he's harvesting fresh salad greens and sweet carrots from old-fashioned cold frames. Coleman relies on low-tech solar heating and cold-tolerant vegetables.

A new Nantucket perennial garden

A new Nantucket perennial garden 06/09/2004 12:25 PM
One of the things I did while on Nantucket was plant a new perennial garden along the edge of the lawn. My Nantucket Perennial Garden gets lots of sun, so I picked plants that would thrive with sun. I also selected plants that were relatively tough, since the soil is sandy and during the summer it can get pretty dry. It took about three days of work to get the garden completed, and my mom helped me get all the plants into the ground. It was lots of fun, and if I had more money to buy plants, I'd keep extend the garden along the rest of that edge of the lawn. For now, what's there will suffice. And who knew I could make a stone wall? Not me.

A Winter Garden in Spring

A Winter Garden in Spring 04/17/2004 04:41 PM

Helsinki Winter Garden

A few photos from a trip to the Helsinki Winter Garden just before Easter. The garden is enclosed in a Victorian era greenhouse and hosts quite a nice succulent room, palm room and room for various seasonal plants. Easter brings little baby chicks to the Win ter Garden that little kids press their faces up to the glass to watch intently as they cheep and hop around. Tulips and daffodils also add a splash of colour to the landscape inside the green canopy. It's free to visit during its rather limited hours of operation and the outdoor garden is beautiful during the summer when the flowers are in bloom. It reminds me a lot of the Jewel Box, an art deco conservatory, and Tower Grove Park, a Victorian walking park, in St. Louis quite a bit since they were all built during a time that building public gardens for all people to enjoy was popular. I still miss living next to Tower Grove Park as it was one of the most beautiful spots in the city.
