Abuse Photos Were Digital

Abuse Photos Were Digital 05/07/2004 07:04 PM

Di gital cameras are changing how Iraq war is perceived: How would this have been different if they were traditional? Would it have played out differently? Traditional photos can get lost, aren't instantly reproducable, and have to be physically transported. Would this situation not have come to light if that were the case?

Some of the most shocking or memorable photos from the Iraq war were almost certainly taken by soldiers or government contractors — and zipped around the world with an ease that never existed in the days of film. [...]

...The New Yorker confirmed the photos were shot with a digital camera, though it did not disclose the source.

Wrangle digital photos with imgSeek

Wrangle digital photos with imgSeek 07/19/2004 08:09 AM
Back in the Bad Old Days we kept our photos crammed into shoeboxes in the closet, to be pulled out once every few years for a halfhearted attempt at assembling an album. With the onset of the digital era, that should be a thing of past, right? Yet most of us have simply replaced the shoeboxes with overcrowded folders on our PCs, and because our digital cameras tend to slap on unhelpful names like DCS00032.JPG, we still have to browse through them all manually to find the ones that are of interest to us. But one particularly good open source program, imgSeek, can help you get organized.

flipped flagThis photo was emailed to me along with a ton of forwarding headers and a bunch of people in the CC: field. (click on the photo to see a full-sized version). Here's the text that came with it:
Nothing like the US soldier's sense of  humor...and well aimed!
Hooray for our troops.
READ THE BLACK PATCH UNDER THE US FLAG;
This SHOULD be on the front cover of Time, Newsweek, etc.
But it won't.
Let's you and I "put it there" by forwarding this all around the world (so
to speak)!
(The flags are France, Germany, and Russia)-- in case you don't know..
It's easy to tell that the black patch and the three flags below it have been added after the photo was taken. They are almost hovering off the fabric of the uniform. But the big giveaway is the US flag. Isn't it facing the wrong way? The stars are usually on the left. This is a mirror image. I'm guessing this picture was horizontally flipped before someone added the black patch and the other country's flags. I should have checked snopes before posting this. The photo is fake. I was wrong about the flag, though. The patch really looks like that. According to snopes, it's to give the appearing that the flag is flying in a breeze blowing towards the front of the soldier. (Thanks Cody!)

On scientific truth and Christian

On scientific truth and Christian
truth...
07/16/2004 06:40 AM

In the middle of an article about the way that the religious right have interfered with scientific work in the US, I find a troubling paragraph:

At a time when biology is poised to undergo a fundamental revolution, the US government, arguably the most potent government in the history of the world, is rife with White House appointees who believe that scientific truth and Christian truth cannot be synonymous, and may well be in opposition.

I ask myself - do I believe that scientific truth and Christian truth can be synonymous? My answer - no. I ask myself - do I believe that they may well be in opposition? My answer - yes. The only difference between me and the people from the religious right then, is that we disagree with which 'truth' is the more reliable. I stick on the side of the people who test their conclusions and refine their belief systems with reference to evidence - they stick to the side of the people who believe that a magic being sets bushes on fire and turns women into salt.

So the scary bit for me is not that the nutters in power believe that the two are incompatible, but that the assumption is that for reasonable, normal, run-of-the-mill scientists all across America that it's normal to be able to reconcile meteorology with the concept of rains of blood and biology with people who bring people back from the dead...

BoingBoing reader Steve Portigal says, "Chiquita is looking at growing nanners with other fruit flavors embedded in them. Seems like they have the technology, but will it fly?" The ethical implications are terrifying. If they can genetically modify crops, humans can't be far off. That means one thing and one thing only: the dawn of banana-flavored babies. Link (via agendainc)

Update: Frankenbana-not? BoingBoing reader Matt Grommes says, "According to a few stories about this announcement like this one, Chiquita is denying that the bananas will be genetically engineered. Whether that's to get out from under the GM stigma early or the truth, who knows."
