User Deletion Bug

User Deletion Bug

User Deletion Bug 11/04/2003 03:44 PM

Users who have bootstrapped or installed Fink 0.5.3 or Fink 0.6.0 on Mac OS X 10.3 could exhibit a problem where all users get deleted from the netinfo database, and you become unable to log in. If you are using Mac OS X 10.3, please be sure you're using the latest Fink version to avoid the issue. To make sure you don't have upgrade problems, check your /sw/etc/apt/sources.list file. You will need to modify it if it contains deb lines that point to "release" or "current" without a version number. In other words, if your sources.list file contains these lines: deb http://us.dl.sourceforge.net/fink/direct_download release main deb http://us.dl.sourceforge.net/fink/direct_download current main ...you should change them to this: deb http://us.dl.sourceforge.net/fink/direct_download 10.3/release main deb http://us.dl.sourceforge.net/fink/direct_download 10.3/current main We are working on updating the repository to make sure that even if you update you don't get the broken code, but in the meantime, make sure your sources.list file has the correct entries.

Quick Summary: DO NOT USE DSELECT, and if you've used it, check your /sw/etc/apt/sources.list file carefully. Users who have bootstrapped or installed Fink 0.5.3 or Fink 0.6.0 on Mac OS X 10.3 could exhibit a problem where all users get deleted from the netinfo database, and you become unable to log in. We believe that this problem can only occur if you've used dselect. If you are using Mac OS X 10.3, please be sure you're using the latest Fink version to avoid the issue. To make sure you don't have upgrade problems, check your /sw/etc/apt/sources.list file. Other users have experienced problems with dselect itself, particularly complaints about a missing "darwin" package. If you are running dselect under 10.3 and you don't get this warning, then your sources.list file is likely to be corrupted and you should repair it as above.

Mass-deletion art show on Saturday in LA 06/17/2005 03:34 PM
Cory Doctorow: This Saturday, Monochrom (crazy Austrian net-artists) continue their rampage across the West Coast with "Experience The Experience Of A Magnetism Party" at Los Angeles's Machine Project:
Accompanied by contemporary alternative mainstream rhythms and using several heavy-duty neodym magnets, monochrom will delete all the data carriers that can be found. Naturally the public is invited to bring data carriers themselves.

The destruction of magnetic storage media is a form of destruction that can reasonably be called unspectacular. But it is important. Our society collects and collects and collects. The hard drives are full. However, we can also dispense with the bourgeois-humanist criticism of the "information flood", this maelstrom that is said to attack the printed word. The Magnetism Party is therefore an attempt to actively come to terms with one aspect of the information society that is almost completely ignored by our epistemological machinery.

Delete is just another word for nothing left to lose.

Here're my running notes from danah boyd's Re venge of the User: Lessons from Creator/User Battles at the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference in San Diego.
The response is an attempt to "configure the users" -- constrain behavior to acceptable behavior with messaaging, kicking people off, etc.

This won't work: you can't tell a hacker not to hack. These kids are social hackers. You can stop some bad behavior, but you chase off your best users, too.

Dating doesn't happen because you're in a dating context. Dating arises out of real contexts.

Taking away fakesters didn't make Frienster more real. Friendster is unreal because people never remove their friends, even if they never see them (the exception is when you break up, ironic, because ex-lovers are strong ties!).

Weakness in Passphrase Choice in WPA
Interface
11/04/2003 02:32 PM
By Robert MoskowitzSenior Technical DirectorICSA Labs, a division of TruSecure Corp Use of PSK as the key establishment method WPA and 802.11i provide for a Pre-Shared Key (PSK) as an alternative to 802.1X based key establishment. A PSK is a 256 bit number or a passphrase 8 to 63 bytes long. Each station MAY have its own PSK, tied to its MAC address. To date, vendors are only providing for one PSK for an ESS, just as they do for WEP keying. When a PSK is used instead of 802.1X, the PSK is the Pairwise Master Key (PMK) that is used to drive the 4-way handshake and the whole Pairwise Transient Key (PTK) keying hierarchy. There is a straightforward formula for converting a passphrase PSK to the 256-bit value needed for the PMK. This paper will look into the risks of using a PSK and particularly the risk associated with a passphrase-based PSK. How the PSK is used in WPA and 802.11i The PSK provides an easily implemented alternative for the PMK as compared to using 802.1X to generate a PMK. A 256bit PSK is used directly as the PMK. When the PSK is a passphrase, the PMK is derived from the passphrase as follows: PMK = PBKDF2(passphrase, ssid, ssidLength, 4096, 256) Where the PBKDF2 method is from PKCS #5 v2.0: Password-based Cryptography Standard. This means that the concatenated string of the passphrase, SSID, and the SSIDlength is hashed 4096 times to generate a value of 256 bits. The lengths of the passphrase and the SSID have little impact on the speed of this operation. The PTK is a keyed-HMAC function using the PMK on the two MAC addresses and the two nonces from the first two packets of the 4-Way Handshake. This is why the whole keying hierarchy falls into the hands of anyone possessing the PSK, as all the other information is knowable. The Intra-PSK attack The normal practice is to have a single PSK within an ESS. To generate any PTK, a device only needs to learn the two MAC addresses and nonces (and the selected ciphersuite). All of this is available in the initial exchange, from the ASSOCIATE through the 4-Way Handshake. Any device can passively listen for these frames and then generate the PTK. If the device missed these frames, it can send a DISASSOCIATE against the STA and force the STA to perform the...

Virex 7.2.1 available from .Mac

Virex 7.2.1 available from .Mac 10/29/2003 02:19 AM
This isn't related to AppleScript but it's noteworthy for many .Mac subscribers who use Fink and Virex (I don't know about Virex releases from other sources). Virex 7.2 has hosed many Fink installations and here's what the Virex 7.2.1 ReadMe has to say about it:
During the installation of Virex 7.2, the Virex installer will copy a number of files into the /sw/lib directory. Fink software installations that are residing on the machine may then fail to work as their libraries will have been overwritten with the Virex 7.2 libraries. Virex 7.2.1 resolves this issue by installing the libraries to the /usr/local/vscanx/lib directory.
We now return to our regularly scheduled AppleScript news and information.

The Virex 7.2 package, currently being distributed free to all .Mac members, has a serious conflict with Fink. Fink users should not install Virex 7.2 under any circumstances. Installing it after Fink is installed will damage your Fink installation; installing it prior to Fink will make it impossible to install Fink without damaging Virex. This bug has been reported to Virex's manufacturer. We will keep the Fink community informed about the situation as it develops.

Virex problem resolved

Virex problem resolved 10/28/2003 11:07 PM
McAfee has released Virex 7.2.1, which no longer overwrites the main Fink directory /sw. Fink users should continue to avoid Virex 7.2. Early reports indicate that upgrading Virex from 7.2 to 7.2.1 still leaves some problems however. If you upgrade Virex with Fink not installed, and subsequently wish to install Fink, you will need to delete the /sw directory by hand before installing. And if you upgrade Virex with Fink already installed, you should immediately run fink reinstall openssl-shlibs dlcompat-shlibs curl-ssl-shlibs to restore files which the Virex upgrade may have deleted.
