ICANN's Questionable Deals Coming Under
Attack
04/05/2005 05:40 PMHow is it that ICANN continues to have free reign over the internet
with little-to-no real oversight? The latest, as pointed out by
Ed
Felten, is that it looks like ICANN violated its own rules and
did a
secret deal with a front group for the airline industry to give
them control over the .travel domain. This comes just a day after
others noticed that the criteria used by ICANN to determine who should
control .net
was designed to favor one candidate by specifically including
an extra criteria that didn't actually matter and wasn't in the
criteria list that companies were supposed to be judged on.
Meanwhile, ICANN continues to
push
for more money without telling anyone what they need it for, and
kicki
ng out the few board members elected by the public for oversight
when they dared to ask to
see
ICANN's records. However, ICANN seems to be able to keep doing
what it's doing, and making up its own rules while keeping the details
secret all the time.

IPv6 on Mac OS X
IPv6 on Mac OS X
03/13/2003 10:16 AMEnabling IPv6 on OS X. Very neat. Very easy. Dancing turtles
everywhere. Use en1 instead of en0 to use the AirPort interface
instead of ethernet. Of course, as Aaron points out, the IPv6
transition is a big mess, so who really cares? I've been vaguely
contemplating to make my private network run IPv6 instead of on 10.x
addresses, but the only advantage is the neat factor (and that would
grow old fast I'm sure) and there are many disadvantages. Hmn......

IPv6 Gets Real
07/21/2004 10:47 AMLooks like IPv6 is going from being that funny option in the
network stack that nobody uses to being a real live protocol. Reuters
has the story.
Vinton Cerf of the Internet Corp. for Assigned Names and
Numbers (ICANN) said the next-generation protocol, IPv6, had been
added to its root server systems, making it possible for every person
or device to have an Internet protocol address.
[...]
"This is a big, big step," Cerf said, speaking on sidelines of ICANN's
annual conference held in the Malaysian capital.
[...]
Cerf said about two-thirds of the 4.3 billion Internet addresses
currently available were used up, adding that IPv6 could magnify
capacity by some "25,000 trillion trillion times".
From reading ICANN's pre
ss release, it looks like they're starting with the .kr (Korea)
and .jp (Japan) TLD's. I imagine it will be a while before they get
confident enough to roll it out for .com, .net, and .org.

Understanding Mobile IPv6
04/10/2004 12:43 PMMobile Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) allows an IPv6 node to be
mobile—to arbitrarily change its location on the IPv6 Internet—and
still maintain existing connections. Connection maintenance for mobile
nodes is not done by modifying connection-oriented protocols such as
TCP, but by handling the change of addresses at the Internet layer
using Mobile IPv6 messages and options and processes that ensure the
correct delivery of data regardless of the mobile node's location.

AODV-UU (Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector Routing, from Uppsala
University) is a routing protocol under investigation by the IETF for
use in ad-hoc networks, where both end-users and routers are mobile.
This implementation supports IPv6 and multicasting (with the
appropriate patch) and is compliant with RFC 3561.

Compilation warnings have been fixed.
