Free baby photo trojan gets new moms to
sell baby-privacy
04/04/2005 06:24 AMCory Doctorow:
A friend of mine worked at Procter and Gamble when they hit on the
idea of giving away baskets of baby-related freebies to new moms. The
idea was that a couple days after the family went home and they needed
more diapers, mom would send dad out with the package from the
freebies and say, "More like these, please." It's pretty clever, and
I'm cool with it -- especially now that the whole thing is handled
through brokers who take products from a variety of vendors, with
input from maternity wards.
That, I think, is a pretty good way of marketing to new families. It
doesn't compromise privacy, it gives them something they need, and it
doesn't force them or lock them in. It's informative, useful, and
respectful (provided that the marketing makes it clear that there's no
medical endorsement of these products).
Compare that to this: a service that sneakily gets moms to agree to a
"free baby photo" while they're signing all their necessary medical
forms on the morning of their delivery. The company that takes the
picture then sells your contact info to anyone who'll buy it.
On the morning of the delivery, the nurse hands a sheaf of forms to
the mother-to-be. Buried within is a release form offering a free
portrait of the new baby. Mom is wired to three different machines,
having her pulse and blood pressure measured automatically while two
others sensors detect uterine contractions and the baby’s heart rate
and another chattering electromechanical behemoth plots a seismograph
of both...
...[T]he photo enterprise is run by a third party, Growing Family.
They’ll shoot a picture of your munchkin, in exchange for his or her
name and birthdate and your full name and address...
Growing Family will use your information from time to time to
promote additional products, services, rewards and special offers from
Growing Family Network and its select Network Partners.
Another friend of mine had his baby daughter die from crib-death a few
weeks after she was born. For years afterward, he and his wife got a
steady stream of marketing materials, including ghastly "birthday
cards" from marketers who'd bought the information that they'd had a
baby, but never received the message that the baby had died. Needless
to say, when their next baby was born, they never, ever bought
products from the companies that ghoulishly continued to market to
their dead daughter.

Taking The Camera Out Of The Camera
Phone
11/04/2003 07:06 PMWe've had a lot of stories in the last six months or so about
shortsighted companies deciding to simply ban camera phones outright.
In the past, I wondered if such rules would have an
impact
a> on mobile phone sales, but I didn't expect the carriers to jump on
this topic so quickly. Put me in the same surprised boat as Alan
Reiter to hear that carriers are convincing mobile phone handset
makers to
offer
multiple versions of their phones: one with a camera and the other
without. I really thought that with only a few companies overreacting
and missing the point about camera phones, it would blow over, and a
decade from now we'd be laughing at silly companies banning camera
phones. At this rate, that might not be true. This is going to be a
huge waste of money. Designing a new phone will take some money, and
will create a phone that offers less value to the customer (and less
opportunity for revenue for the carrier). However as camera phones
begin to find more acceptance in the marketplace, people are going to
get angry when their boss tells them the expensive phone they just
bought can't be brought into the office. They're not going to want to
buy the version without the camera if part of the reason they're
upgrading is for the camera in the first place. This is a (costly)
over reaction to a technology that will do nothing to stop the real
problem (theft of corporate secrets or invasion of privacy), but will
cost lots of money and anger many people.

San Francisco, baby...
San Francisco, baby...
08/13/2004 01:59 AMPing. Now in San Francisco after cool drive with fun people in
which I mostly slept and pointed at wind farms and acres of densely
packed cows. Had subsequent great fun at the SixApart Mixer thing
where I met loads of people - some for the first time, others not.
Looked slightly nervous around some people who do really good work.
Touched a couple of them without them noticing (or at least without
them calling the police). Got a free USB dongle thing and saw the 3.1
release of MT which doesn't seem overly dramatic at first but kind of
sits in the back of your head and wiggles its tush in the direction of
interesting things. Cab back to Leslie's place - talking about The
O.C. and TV shows in general when I get to pull out my trump card -
super-secret super-cool thing that made Leslie go oooooh. Don't think

must confess am vaguely dreading it.

There is a house in New Orleans... A recent archeological
excavation in the French Quarter reveals that a hotel called the
"Rising Sun" operating in the early 1800s may have been the
ruin of many a poor girl. Clues include suggestive newspaper ads from
the period and artifacts such as "a large number of liquor

Rosemary's Baby at the DNC

You know, it's really difficult for me to tell if Ann Coulter is the
2nd coming of Senator McCarthy or a comic genius. I usually don't
bother reading her writing as it has often left me with the same
feeling I had after reading Mein Kampf or the Unabomber's
manifesto. I was rather amazed to read that USA Today dumped her
column reporting on the DNC this week which made me curious enough to
read the offending text just to see what could have possibly made her
persona non grata with a newspaper that has more colour
graphics than actual news since reading is hard for the average
American. It's impossible to discern if she's being funny or if she's
really as insane as she appears.
Here at the Spawn of Satan convention in Boston, conservatives are
deploying a series of covert signals to identify one another, much
like gay men do. My allies are the ones wearing crosses or American
flags. The people sporting shirts emblazened with the "F-word" are my
opponents. Also, as always, the pretty girls and cops are on my side,
most of them barely able to conceal their eye-rolling.
[...]
As for the pretty girls, I can only guess that it's because liberal
boys never try to make a move on you without the UN Security Council's
approval. Plus, it's no fun riding around in those dinky little
hybrid cars. My pretty-girl allies stick out like a sore thumb amongst
the corn-fed, no make-up, natural fiber, no-bra needing,
sandal-wearing, hirsute, somewhat fragrant hippie chick pie wagons
they call "women" at the Democratic National Convention.
I think I need to make a banner that reads "AA-Cup, corndog eatin',
cotton wearin' pie wagons for KERRY!", go round up my fellow small
boobed femmes and show up at the GOP convention. Coulter looks like a
man and isn't exactly well endowed herself so maybe she's saying that
she just hangs around the pretty girls since every pretty girl has an
ugly sidekick to make her look good. Voting Republican obviously
didn't give her big boobies or improve her looks. Perhaps someone
forgot to tell her about plastic surgery to giveth what god hath not.
But, seriously, the thought of even one person reading her shit and
thinking it's the gospel makes my skin crawl. The Dems are the "Spawn
of Satan" now? That rates right up there with the 'evildoers', 'axis
of evil' and 'crusade'. It reminds me that these folks who love this
kind of dialogue are those who don't think for themselves much and use
the word 'flock' in a context other than sheep. They're registered to
vote and they vote in large numbers. Expats and excapees who have
not registered for an absentee
ballot should do so as soon as possible. Please register. Please
vote. It's a slim chance that we'll succeed in removing Bush from
office, but hope is all we have.
And, Ann Coulter, wherever you are, thanks for reminding me that I
needed to register to vote and for giving me the resolve to vote in
spite of my waning hope for change. I don't hate America, but I do
hate Americans like you who have been placed in positions of
power/influence instead of prison or a mental institution.

” In April, 2000, when eBay (EBAY ) started selling used

Buying collectibles sight unseen was one thing, but purchasing an

fact, last month, eBay Motors sold its 1 millionth car. And with 12

It's mid-May and for outdoor adventurer fans that means one thing:
thanks to major weather pattern shifts, the tiny window of opportunity
for climbing Mt. Everest is upon us. The first to summit this year
looks to be a team from Mexico and Canada, planning to
hit the top on Sunday morning. Of course, summiting Everest is
a dangerous endeavor, and the crowds on the trail can often
lead to
disaster. In other mt. climbing news, the north face of

Eiger is unclimbable this year.
