The first two handsets for
AT&T Wireless's new UMTS high-speed 3G wireless service could be
nicer, especially for $300 a pop, but it's a new service so we'll give
them a break for the moment. The Motorola A845 looks like the one to
get compared to the Nokia 6651, if only for the camera alone. If
you're going to have high-speed uploads and downloads (between 220-320
kbps, or about eight times as fast as GPRS), sending video clips to
friends would be one of the best new ways to utilize all that
bandwidth. That and watching television at 7 frames a second (which
sounds bad, but it's a lot better than the frame every second or two
GRPS and PCS television services provide now).

Junxion: Shared Internet Over Cellular
Junxion: Shared Internet Over Cellular
06/23/2004 09:11 AM
Although they're
still in the prototype stage, a Seattle company called Junxion is
doing something potentially very useful. By plugging any number of
cellular network PCMCIA cards into their 'Junxion' box, which then
acts as a router over Ethernet or WiFi to any number of local
machines, the company plans to capitalize on the ever-expanding data
bandwidth available on modern cellular networks. So instead of
scrambling to find a WiFi connection -- which is still a good option,
of course, especially if it's a free node -- you can set up a mobile
workplace with a decent internet connection anywhere you can get a
cellular signal. You're limited to the speeds of the cellular network,
of course, but between a Junxion box, which is pretty large now, but
will surely get smaller, and built-in WiFi, you should be able to get
wireless internet just about anywhere. And that, as they say, owns.
(Thanks, Oliver!)

Junxion Box Puts Cellular Data at
Workgroup's Disposal
Junxion Box Puts Cellular Data at
Workgroup's Disposal
06/21/2004 09:02 AMJunxion Box acts as bridge between growing cellular data networks and
the need for ubiquitous, driver-free workgroup access: In today's
Seattle Times, I write about local firm Junxion which will shortly
ship its Junxion Box, a small device that uplinks to cellular data
networks through a PC Card, and shares the connection via built-in
Ethernet and Wi-Fi. Think of it like a portable Internet feed. The
Junxion Box is driver free in the sense that the company handles the
software connection for several kinds of PC Cards to several national
data networks. Local users connect via the LAN side--they don't have
to install and configure the special PC Card drivers which are
available for specific platforms with specific limitations. Temporary
work sites and mobile workgroups will benefit most from the system,
which is an effective modem and analog line replacement given current
cell data speeds. But as cell networks increase in speed and prices
continue to fall, it's likely that the Junxion Box's niche will expand
as more of a broadband replacement for certain kinds of markets. I've
tested a prototype of the Junxion box, and it's just as easy as the
company maintains. You plug it into AC power or a DC car adapter. You
wait a few moments for it to train up to the cell data network. You
connect. Will cell operators allow the Junxion Box on their network,
and can they do anything to stop its use? The answers seem to be maybe
and no....

Cingular buys AT+T Wireless
Cingular buys AT+T Wireless
02/17/2004 11:47 AM$41 billion. What will the resulting company be, and do?
Wow. Dan
Gillmor has
this to say about why the mega-merger shouldn't
worry those concerned about carrier consolidation:
This merger won't necessarily be bad for competition.I've been using
AT&T Wireless' GSM service for about a year now. Quality of service is
marginal, and the customer service has been a bit lower than marginal.
But Cingular, also a GSM carrier, has an even worse reputation. So
maybe combining these two networks will create something that offers
at least reasonable quality.
Cingular probably overpaid, but it's smart to make this deal in at
least one respect. There's only room for a couple of mergers before
the market gets too cozy for real competition. While expecting serious
antitrust scrutiny from the Bush administration is probably futile,
there's probably enough angst in Congress to keep consolidation from
being rampant.
Cingular Buys AT&T Wireless; Whither
3G?
Cingular Buys AT&T Wireless; Whither
3G?
02/17/2004 11:44 AMCingular has successful bid for AT&T Wireless -- and where's the
data discussion in all this?: The coverage of the AT&T Wireless
deal focused almost exclusively on customer acquisition, marketing
budgets, infrastructure, and voice revenue, despite the growing
certainty that next-generation (3G) cell data and voice services will
be the biggest competitive factors for U.S.-based carriers in the
remainder of this decade. AT&T Wireless has nationwide EDGE (about 100
Kbps top realistic speed, but more like high-modem speeds reliably).
Cingular has GPRS, but last year was saying they would be building out
EDGE quickly, and then hasn't discussed it since. The combined company
will obviously focus its efforts on a quicker rollout of W-CDMA, the
GSM evolution standard for 3G data/voice, especially with the
commitment of Verizon Wireless of $1 billion to fully deploy 1xEvDO
(up to 400 Kbps) nationwide this year. (Verizon Wireless has overnight
become the No. 2 U.S. carrier, pending approval of the Cingular
acquisition of AT&T Wireless.) A not-so-obscure factoid missed in all
of the reporting I've seen about AT&T Wireless is its requirement to
repay a $6.1 billion -- yes, BILLION -- loan to DoCoMo if they don't
have four U.S. cities set up by Dec. 31, 2004, with commercially
offered 3G data services. (Here's an article from last July about it.)
EDGE is 2.5G and doesn't qualify, as I understand it, but I haven't
seen an update on the story. It's strange that in a $41 billion deal a
loan of $6.1 billion that would need to be repaid if conditions
weren't met that are currently unmet wasn't highlighted as one of the
liabilities of acquiring the company. I can only hope that Cingular
did more due diligence than some of the business press....
