How AT&T Wireless Self-Destructed In A

How AT&T Wireless Self-Destructed In A
Few Easy Steps
04/19/2004 10:58 AM
theodp writes "CIO.com has the story of a botched CRM upgrade that cost the telco thousands of new customers and an estimated $100 million in lost revenue, so damaging the carrier's reputation that many analysts believe it hastened its sale to Cingular. Among the hard lessons learned: telling employees to 'Come in every day and expect to be fired' doesn't always inspire the troops to greater effort." This just confirms a number of the stories that have been floating around over the past few months about what was going on inside AT&T Wireless that caused so many problems. Clearly, not all of it was AT&T Wireless' fault, but it seems clear that management made a few incredibly short-sighted decisions in letting things get to where they did. Many of the biggest mistakes could accurately be pinned on outside execs - but letting those decisions have an impact in the first place was AT&T Wireless' responsibility. It looks like, among other things, they didn't take the number portability date seriously (despite the fact that even the most basic understanding of the FCC's position would make it clear there weren't going to be any more delays), they didn't come up with a reasonable upgrade plan for the CRM system, and they were spending way too much time and effort on how to cut their customer service costs - rather than on how to improve their customer service. Considering the impact of number portability is that customer service was suddenly going to matter a lot more - this one seems particularly short-sighted.

As a follow-up to last week's launch of RSS in My Yahoo! I'd like to describe how amazingly simple it is to configure MovableType to ping Yahoo's RSS database each time you post to your weblog. But first I should explain why you want to do that... Simply put, if you ping Yahoo, you content makes it into My Yahoo much faster. Otherwise, left to it's own motivations, the crawler will pull your RSS feed every so often (more often...

05/31/2004 05:38 AM
Los Angeles Times - WASHINGTON — As they settled into first class on American Airlines Flight 1438 from Chicago to Miami, they were supposed to be the last line of defense against terrorists — two highly trained U.S. air marshals who would sit unnoticed among the ordinary travelers but spring into action at the first sign of trouble.

Easy Come, Easy Go: Antigua Loses To US

Easy Come, Easy Go: Antigua Loses To US
Over Gambling
04/07/2005 05:39 PM
Antigua has been battling the US for some time over the US's ban on online gambling. For many years, Antigua-based online casinos have run into problems with US laws. Two years ago, they went to the WTO claiming that the US ban on online gambling was a violation of a fair trade agreement the two nations had signed. It took the WTO almost exactly one year to point out that Antig ua was probably right. Of course, that wasn't acceptable for politicians who seem to think gambling is pure evil (except, of course, when it contributes to local tax coffers) -- so, while they planned to ignore the ruling completely (we're the US, we don't follow international rulings unless we agree with them), they did file an appeal, just for fun. It turns out that appeal worked, and the WTO has changed its mind, saying that banning gambling is a "moral issue," and therefore not subject to the fair trade agreement the two nations signed. So, sorry for all you online gambling addicts in the US, but you're back to breaking the law again.

Backup Hard Drives: CMS ABSplus And
Maxtor OneTouch Offer Easy Backup And
Easy Storage
12/19/2003 11:33 AM
Both drives do a fine job of simplifying backup and providing external storage space. The ABSplus is a focused backup device that's easy to use, right out of the box, for backup and restoration, whereas Maxtor's cheaper and quieter drive is better for people who want extra disk space and more backup flexibility. The Reality of Bugs

The Reality of Bugs 11/13/2003 12:38 AM

As some comments in my previous blog entry illustrate, I think people simply don't grasp the magnitude of the Web. There are (conservatively) 10 million Web sites on the Web. Let's say (conservatively) that each Web site has 50 unique Web pages. That's 500 million Web pages that the Web browser has to work perfectly on.

Let's imagine that the browser has done a fantastic job of emulating all the quirks of WinIE and Netscape 4, and that it is really good at laying out malformed HTML. An awesome browser would be (conservatively) 95% compliant, which means that it would have some sort of bug or problem on 5% of those 500 million Web pages.

5% of 500 million Web pages is 25 million malfunctioning Web pages. Let's now assume that only 10% of those Web pages are even seen by someone using Safari itself. Now we're down to 2.5 million pages seen by Safari users.

If only 10% of those users even bother to report a bug, that's 250,000 unique bugs that have to be screened.

This is the reality of the Web. People are constantly shocked and amazed that their pet bug hasn't been fixed in subsequent releases (e.g., in Mozilla or Safari), but those people simply don't understand how many hundreds of thousands of bugs their particular problem is competing with.

After a lot of war talk last night, the Republicans are getting back to the "compassionate conservatism" theme -- a clever and probably necessary strategy for Bush two months from Election Day when more Americans think his opponent understands people like them. Helping to make Bush's case: Education Secretary Rod Paige. (You may remember Paige's outrageous comments earlier this year likening the nation's largest teachers union to a "terrorist organization.")

Because the Kerry speech is so important, I've decided to see it the way it's meant to be seen: On TV. Yes, I've come home. And, oh are my feet and back glad. Sure, I felt guilty skulking out of the Fleet. But not enough to stay. At the Convention I can't hear what the speakers are saying, and I've absorbed so much atmosphere that I'm pooping victory balloons. So, what do I get out of being there for another night? I'm sure you'll tell me. I've seen the official excerpts of Kerry's speech, released by the Democrats. How...
