A few months ago, we pointed out that, thanks to a growing number of "smart phones," flight attendants were often having trouble with passengers who wanted to use the PDA functionality of their phones, but had the wireles s transmitter turned off. Unfortunately, there's no easy way for anyone to see quickly if the phone really has its wireless abilities shut off, or if the person is just saying that to keep the flight attendants off their back. So, now, the Consumer Electronics Association is trying to come up with a standard way to e asily display that a mobile phone is in "flight mode" -- where the user can make use of applications on the phone, but isn't transmitting a wireless signal. Next thing you know, they're going to need another way of indicating to everyone that the camera part of a camera phone isn't on...

Boeing, Airbus Square Off on In-Flight
Data
07/22/2004 04:23 PM
Two stories converge on Connexion by Boeing and Airbus's future in-flight data plans: Tenzing is folding itself into a firm jointly owned by itself, Airbus, and SITA, a Dutch-based air-phone operator. Tenzing will keep employees in Seattle, and SITA will be the majority shareholder. Tenzing will have the advantage now of this direct relationship with Airbus, which has begun to build Wi-Fi into planes as a standard option. The new company will also focus on in-flight wireless calls, the third firm to announce its intentions to offer or to test out this capability in the last few weeks. The new firm expects to offer that service in 2006 starting on intra-Europe flights where SITA already offers its more conventional in-flight phone service, while their high-speed data offering is still on track starting in 2005. Meanwhile, Connexion by Boeing signed Siemens as a customer, which means that Siemens employees will have easier, and presumably cheaper, access to the service. Connexion is installed in just one Lufthansa plane so far, which flies from Munich to Los Angeles non-stop, but Lufthansa and several other airlines continue their commitment to build out their long-haul fleets....

Services that insert sounds into mobile
phone conversations

Services that insert sounds into mobile
phone conversations
02/01/2005 08:38 PM
Xeni Jardin: A growing number of tech providers now offer "sound insertion" services for mobile phone users. Think: ringtones you plug into the "body" of a voice conversation. Sonic emoticons. Ronan Higgins of cafe.com says:
Lightwav for PalmOne Treo smartphones has a feature called "CoverUp Sound" where you can trigger sounds to play in the phone conversation.

I hear that this application is popular in Japan with cheating "salary men" husbands. They'll trigger sounds of a train station, a busy office or a bar, while explaining to their wives why they won't be home until later. Single men trigger the sound of a girl in the background saying "come back to bed" to make their male friends jealous.

I use it to insert a bad connection effect: "I can't hear you, you're breaking up on me, I'm losing signal, I'll have to call you back about that. Kshhhh."

In related news -- last week, San Francisco-based Phonebites nabbed a US$3MM venture round. They, too, offer a service that allows mobile phone users to insert a pre-recorded sound clip into a live conversation - like a radio soundboard, but for your cell phone. Here's a related Engadget post from last October: Link. (thanks, Marc Nathan, via the unwired list)

Update: BB reader Daniel says,

There's also such an application available for Seiries60 smartphones. The app is called CallCheater. And it works quite nicely.

Mobile Phone Location Services Ready for
Rebirth (Reuters)

Reuters - The use of a mobile phone to pinpoint a caller's location and nearby businesses was a hot concept when the tech bubble peaked in 2000, but only now with better phones and software does it stand to succeed, companies say. Mobile operators are selling much-improved services that help users locate friends or get directions to the nearest train station, but they have to fight off consumers' bad memories from 2000 and 2001, when they offered illegible maps on tiny black-and-white screens.
