HailStorm training wheels

HailStorm training wheels 07/21/2004 10:49 AM

Many folks wouldn't want to be reminded how easy it is to convert sparse input into a detailed profile that includes a phone number, a street address, a satellite photo, and driving directions. Re-entering the basic facts each time perpetuates an illusion of privacy. Yet the reality, for many of us, is that these facts are public.

Since I haven't told Google (or any other directories) to delete my records, I've implicitly given permission for Web applications to use that data. Let me now make that permission explicit. I'd be happy if a Web form made intelligent use of public information about me.

I'd be even happier if I could control the source of that data. Public information is a poorly defined concept, after all. There are online directories that still remember an address I vacated five years ago. I'd like to maintain the facts about me that I deem public. When applications need those facts, I'd like to refer them to a service that dispenses them. [Full story at InfoWorld.com]

HailStorm [CQ] 07/13/2004 10:29 AM
My recent mangling of Diego Doval's name in a print column was a harsh reminder that I neglect one tradition of print journalism at my peril. That tradition is a fact-checking mechanism called CQ. The idea is that an author, when writing the name of a person, company, or product, should CQ it to indicate that the spelling has been double-checked. (The acronym "CQ" is itself unCQ-able, since nobody owns the term or seems to know what it stands for.) Of course a copy editor shouldn't automatically trust an author's CQ. But it's one layer of a defense-in-depth strategy. ...

A Dating Site That Doesn't Need Its Own
Site

A Dating Site That Doesn't Need Its Own
Site
05/04/2004 06:25 PM
People are starting to realize that Google is more of a platform than just a search engine. With all the focus on social networks these days, Google still doesn't search in those networks. So, one company is trying to use the power of Google and public websites to build their own open social networking dating site. Basically, they get you to fill out a typical dating profile, which generates some metadata that you include on your own website. Then, they've apparently built out some sort of front-end that uses Google to search sites that include that metadata. What's unclear is how they make sure that Google will index the right sites that include the data. The business model for the company is to show Google's contextual ads along with the results. It's an interesting idea, but I wonder how comfortable some people are with putting that sort of info on the "publicly" available web. While it's really not all that different than on a dating site, a dating site at least is somewhat hidden behind a protective barrier, and lets the user hide some of their info.

More On The New Site Design

More On The New Site Design 01/25/2003 11:53 PM

Thanks for everyone's feedback on the new design, keep it coming. I fixed a bug in the commenting system where emails where getting shown when people did not want them to be. Feel free to just test the commenting system, I want to weed out any errors. If you do have problems, let me know what browser and platform you are on.

I'd like to explain the new CMS in detail. I explained it well to G.K. Nelson of Stonefishspine in email, and below is a part of that conversation that I think explains the system well.

The CMS uses PHP/MySql, and just a touch of Apache work. The way it works is there is a page called error.php that all bad requests are forwarded to (401,403, and 404 errors). Then, the error page determines if you were requesting a blog page, and if so delivers that to you. The whole thing is transparent. Ex: When you request http://www.readinged.com/blog/archives/December-2002/ the server sees that there is no such file, and directs you to the error page. The error page sees that you requested something within /blog/, and feeds you what you wanted without you knowing any different. And it will work with search engines because of the transparency of the whole thing; you never know you're actually hitting an error page. The advantage that I see is you get a clean URL scheme that you can adapt however you want without having to actually maintain all of those pages. The only disadvantage I see is its going to cause a lot of "bad request" hits in log files, but I can live with that.

I got the idea to design the system this way from PHP.net. If you are not familiar with the PHP website, they use a system similar to this for bad requests. If you request http://www.php.net/strtolower their site engine will redirect you to the function page for the strtolower() function, who's URL is actually quite longer than what you need to type in.
