The July 20 issue of Newsweek shows Steve Jobs holding the next generation iPod. The image has been leaked on MSN ahead of time. The new iPod appears to be the same form factor as the current full-sized iPod with the iPod mini's scroll wheel containing built-in buttons.

Looks like Fujifilm Germany may have accidentally leaked information about the company's upcoming product line, including news of the Fujifilm S3Pro DSLR [pictured], a 12.1-megapixel follow up to the FinePix S2 Pro. There's also information about some new printers and some "new techologies," mostly stuff about the new "Image Intelligence" image processing software, as well as Fuji's "Picture the Future" roadmap for the upcoming year.

They'll likely pull the information from the website - it was dated for the 28th - but LivingRoom grabbed the press releases and is mirroring them now.

Somehow, someone managed to get their hands on a copy of some leaked ForceWare 66.32 drivers. These files are dated September 4, 2004, and the .inf files show that they only support GeForce 6600 GT & Quadro FX 540.

It looked like a great story opportunity to me. There it was, right at the bottom of the leaked IBM internal memo reported on by Mike Magee in The Inquirer on Wednesday which seemed to call for an internal migration of desktops at IBM to Linux: the name and location of an IBMer leading something called an "Open Desktop Project Office." I immediately fired off an email to my IBM PR contact asking for an interview with the project leader. But sometimes the story is that there is no story -- or at least no answer.

If you've been reading the various techie sites this afternoon, you've surely seen the rumors that source code from Windows NT and Windows 2000 have leaked onto the internet. Am I the only one who don't think this is that big of a deal? My only surprise is that it didn't happen sooner. As for the direct impact, if true, I imagine it would be small. People are still going to buy Windows. There already are illegal copies on the market, and the company is doing just fine. However, the indirect impact, could be a big deal. Ed Felten points out that, if anything, this has all the downsides of open source software, without the upsides. That is, anyone with bad intent can hunt through the code for vulnerabilities, but they no longer have the large community ready to fix up such vulnerabilities as soon as they're discovered.

Bill Carlson tipped us off to the latest in a series of setbacks for DARPA's Grand Challenge competition. The course map (PDF format) has been leaked to the web. The map was supposed to be kept secret until hours before the race to insure that the robots were able navigate autonomously rather than being preprogrammed for the specific course. Whoa! I've been looking forward to the new features coming to Tivo soon, and this image provides the first possible look into what it might mean. If it's using full rendezvous support, where photos and music are streamed over a home network from an OS X machine, I'll totally be using this.

There are a variety of products that let you stream music from a computer to a stereo system, but cost a couple hundred dollars. It'll be interesting to see how Tivo continues along an Apple-like path of making the DVR into a media hub.

And while we're on the leaked photo tip, Canon has let slip the dogs of, uh, camera... pictures. The EOS 20D hasn't been officially announced yet (it's expected by the end of this week), but the first details are being gleaned from pictures that are still up on Canon's site. There's a mess of projected specs on DPReview, too, and while they seem reasonable enough (they come from a major Korean camera retailer), bear in mind it's still all conjecture at this point. Projected street price for the 8.2-megapixel camera is around $1,300.

The EOS 20D Digital SLR will be an update uses the same lens EF-S lens mount as the Canon's EOS 300D (the Digital Rebel), and will be an update to the 10D (Durr. Thanks, guys.). (Thanks, Geoff!)

Microsoft came out and admitted yesterday that portions of the source code for Windows NT and Windows 2000 had been made available on the Internet.

They're not sure just yet who is at fault — source code is made available to third-party vendors for development purposes, but those developers are sworn to secrecy, but somebody hosed the program. MS is not yet sure just how serious the breach is.

In an article on The Register, John Lettice comments that...

The impact of the leak is however massively more important for Microsoft than it is for the rest of the world, as it effectively blows the company's 'security via obscurity' approach to smithereens. Over the past year or so it has, with much pomp and ceremony, unveiled its shared source programme as a counter to open source, while in the same period it has repeatedly stressed that it cannot disclose some aspects of its code to rivals for security reasons. If they could see it, it would leak, and then evil terrorists would be able to break into Windows more easily. Microsoft, incidentally, currently has the shared source web site as a 'related link' on the leak statement page. Are you entirely sure about this relationship, dahlinks?
