revenue soar 50 percent

Infosys Technologies, India's second largest outsourcer, reported revenue of $1.6 billion for its fiscal year ended March 31, up by 50 percent from $1.1 billion a year ago. Net income for the year also surged, by 55 percent, to $419 million. Infosys said it expects to cross the $2 billion mark in revenue in its current 2006 fiscal year. The strong showing reflects buoyancy in the Indian outsourcing industry as a whole. Provisional figures indicate that India's total exports of software and services grew by 35 percent during the year to March 31, to $17.3 billion, according to Subramanian Ramadorai, chairman of the National Association of Software and Service Companies in Delhi. Infosys and other leading Indian outsourcers have been broadening their services to include business consulting and business process outsourcing, in addition to their core offerings in outsourced software development. Infosys' clients increasingly view the company as a long-term partner that can offer a wide range of services to help them meet their business goals, Nandan Nilekani, Infosys' CEO and managing director, said in a statement.

Next-generation e-forms

Next-generation e-forms 01/26/2004 09:11 AM
E-forms, a technology that's been around for a long time, is now a hotbed of activity. Microsoft's XML-oriented InfoPath, which shipped with Office 2003 in October, is now deployed and in use. Adobe plans to ship a beta version of its PDF-and-XML-oriented forms designer in the first quarter of this year. And e-forms veterans such as PureEdge and Cardiff, whose offerings are built on an XML core, are lining up behind XForms, the e-forms standard that became an official W3C recommendation in October 2003. XUL, one of the more handy technologies on the web today, can be confusing for some. Once you create one application, however, you can pick up the rest quite easily. Then you can start connecting the applications together, and with the help of this new article from phpPatterns.com, it's even easier.

Feedback Forms in the Age of Webl0gs 01/22/2004 02:41 AM
Tara sent me a note that caused me to read the ResearchBuzz article on Yahoo Labs before I had a chance to find it in my aggregator. While I'm impressed that the article doesn't point out the obvious (that it looks like a copycat maneuver in the Google war--nobody could think of a name other than "labs"?) right away, that's not what struck me about it. Neither is the fact that she paid me a nice complement at the end....

Group Forms for GSM/Wi-Fi Roaming

Group Forms for GSM/Wi-Fi Roaming 09/03/2004 05:49 PM
A group of operators and vendors have formed a group to work out seamless roaming between GSM and Wi-Fi networks: The group hopes to develop a specification and work with standards organizations for a formal standard. The three big GSM operators in the United States, AT&T Wireless, Cingular, and T-Mobile are part of the group as are Motorola, Nokia, Siemens, and others. While the creation of a standard is a step in the right direction, there doesn't seem to be any mention on the group's Web site of any work toward backend billing and settlement between operators. The issue of arranging business deals between operators seems to be a more difficult hurdle than the technical issues of such roaming. Also, notably absent in the list of participants are many of the leading Wi-Fi operators. T-Mobile and British Telecom are part of the group but none of the other large Wi-Fi operators. It's always hard to tell when these groups pop up if they'll just fizzle away or actually accomplish what they set out to. There is certainly a need for work on Wi-Fi/cellular roaming so hopefully this group will be successful....

How to create OpenOffice.org forms

How to create OpenOffice.org forms 06/29/2004 09:01 AM
In some situations, you want to create a document that contains some fixed text, but allows users to enter some items and perhaps take some actions on those items. Such a document is called a form, analogous to the preprinted forms everyone has filled out dozens of times. You can create custom forms in most of the OOo applications; forms you create without the Form AutoPilot don't have to connect to a data source (though they can -- see "How do I attach a data source to a form?" below). If the form isn't connected to a data source, information the user enters there is simply saved with the form. (You might do that when you want to send a form to a group of people for them to fill out and return.) Writer, HTML Editor, Calc, Impress, and Draw all support forms.
