Intelligent Message Filter is based on Microsoft SmartScreen Technology from Microsoft Research. By using e-mail characteristics tracked by SmartScreen technology, Intelligent Message Filter can help determine whether each incoming e-mail message is likely to be spam. Based on this likelihood, you can choose to block e-mail messages at the gateway or at the mailbox store. For more information about Intelligent Message Filter, see Exchange Intelligent Message Filter Overview. Important: Before installing Intelligent Message Filter, you must read the Microsoft Exchange Intelligent Message Filter Deployment Guide. If you do not configure Intelligent Message Filter correctly, your messaging environment can be negatively affected.

Reverse twist spam with a half-gainer

Reverse twist spam with a half-gainer 09/11/2004 08:54 AM
I've been noticing that, not surprisingly, spammers seem to be getting yet smarter about their subject lines; I'm having to open more of the little buggers that get through the Thunderbird spam filter to see if they are in fact spams. This morning, though, I got one with a twist I don't understand. the subject line was "Don't open this, I'm pushing cia!is." No, I didn't open it....

Anti-Spam Legislation Makes Spam More
Malicious
04/29/2004 01:28 PM
Aren't unintended consequences wonderful? Now that anti-spam legislation is becoming popular, one result is that spammers aren't wasting time with just spamming mortgage offers and ways to buy Viagra. Instead, now that they realize they're definitely on illegal ground, they're moving more towards malicious attack spam, including phishing attacks and trojan horse attacks. In other words, if they're going to break the law with spam, they figure they might as well go all out.

Report from the spam/anti-spam summit

Report from the spam/anti-spam summit 04/09/2004 04:05 PM
Danny O'Brien has written up one of the first summits between spammers and spam-fighters for the Guardian. It's a great piece.
Surprisingly, no such shootings occur. It's oddly intimate, watching the spammers and the anti-spammers mill around each other like this. It feels like a temporary ceasefire in a vicious war that to most of us seems to be a stalemate...

Over the past year, though, a series of meetings arranged by a trusted figure in the American anti-spam community, Anne Mitchell, have been slowly bringing the two sides together. These mini-conferences, held under the banner of the Institute for Spam and Internet Public Policy, have mostly been between the highest-ranking ISPs - MSN, AOL - and commercial email marketers of the most squeaky clean kind. Initially in secret, these days the meetings are more public.

Spam vs. Anti-Spam: the war escalates!

Spam vs. Anti-Spam: the war escalates! 06/22/2004 02:47 AM
Every time someone introduces a new anti-spam technique, some wily spammer devises a workaround. This myriad of actions and reactions is going to tie our e-mail system in knots. The only real solution to unsolicited mail is to eliminate the problem altogether by stopping spam at the source. To this end, the folks at ImagineNation have proposed an eMstamp solution and have set out to publicly answer the many questions that the proposal has raised. [PRWEB Jun 22, 2004]

Referrer Spam Tool

Referrer Spam Tool 09/06/2004 06:24 PM

Ever find referrers in your logs that make no sense? Sites that couldn't possibly have a link to your site?

I found this product online, which is the first tool I've found to accomplish r eferrer spamming. No link or name because I don't want to promote it.

[This app] is a Windows-based mass referrer spammer, which means that it will make a connection to a buttload of sites of your choosing with any referrer URL and User-Agent that you specify.

This accomplishes several things. Firstly, it generates webmaster traffic from webmasters checking their referral statistics. Secondly, it boosts your link popularity and thereby your Google PR, because a lot of sites have public referral stats with linked entries.

How did I find it? Checking my referrers, of course. They counted on me being narcissistic , and it worked.

At least by calling it a "spammer," they don't try to put lipstick on a pig.

Catches Its Own Creator In The Act

A twelve-year-old kid, looking to make sure he's one of the least-well-liked kids in his classroom among the cheaters, has written up a hack that would let teachers run student papers against a Google check to catch plagiarism. Of course, in testing out the program, his teacher discovered that the program caught the very same 12-year-old who wrote the program in a bit of internet plagiarism himself. Guess he should have tested the program at home first on his own work.

Back in 2003, the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT) reported that e-mail addresses posted either on Web sites or in newsgroups were the most vulnerable for receiving spam. As a measure to counteract this problem, Internet users have attempted to use various methods when posting their addresses such as spelling out the “@” and “.” (yournameATmydomainDOTcom) or adding additional words like “NOSPAM” (yourname.NOSPAM@mydomain.com). In the past these methods have proven effective; however, e-mail address…
