Here
11/04/2003 11:04 AM

A slice of Apple may be served up on your mobile phone as the California-based company is targeting the soon-to-emerge third-generation (3G) phone market in Singapore. Apple is banking on the simplicity of use of its 'core' or flagship media player, QuickTime, to make this happen. By Ho Ka Wei (Straits Times via MyAppleMenu)

Apple Music Player for Phones

Apple Music Player for Phones 07/27/2004 11:13 AM
Reuters reports a deal between Apple and Motorola to bring iTunes-like capability to mobile phones. Steve Jobs is quoted as saying, "Wouldn't it be great if you could take a dozen of your favorite songs with you on your phone. We thought it would be great if together Motorola and Apple could give them (consumers) a small taste of what this digital music revolution is about." Many of us have already done this. I do it every time I travel with my Treo 600 phone, as I noted in this column a few days ago. Except I have an advantage: I'm using MP3 files, which aren't subjected to Apple's version of Digital Restrictions Management that prevent me from using what I've purchased the way I want to use it. Most phones will soon have enough onboard memory for this kind of thing. Users want access to their music, but they don't want DRM speed bumps. I hope Apple and Motorola don't build them in.

07/27/2004 07:46 AM

apple-lmoto-ogo.jpg imageMotorola and Apple have announced a mobile iTunes music player that will allow Motorola's upcoming 'always with you' handsets to play music purchased from the iTunes Music Store. Although the number of songs will be limited to the flash memory storage space inside the phones, most units should be able to hold a few dozen songs, at least, making them the missing piece in Apple's music playback device plan. iPod and iPod mini for those that want a dedicated, large-capacity music device; iTunes phones for those who just need a few songs here and there.

When the service launches in the first half of 2005, songs will be transferred from PCs to phones via the standard USB or Bluetooth interfaces, but hopefully later versions of iTunes Mobile will be able to download over the airwaves. And does this mean that Motorola has decided MP3s are the ringtones of the future? That's going to make some people (read: carriers) a little pissy, especially considering an iTunes download is cheaper than most ringtones.
