New Blogging Tool: TextPattern

New Blogging Tool: TextPattern 01/10/2003 11:52 AM
New Blogging Tool: TextPattern No it can't be downloaded yet. Does it look interesting? Yes. What does it remind me of? Movable Type but written in PHP. Who wrote it? Textism. Home Page. A quick tour. Setting preferences and text output for a site is done through a web browser. Many design templates are provided, all of which are easily edited and previewed via browser. Once a site is up and running, at login the writer is presented with a simple article creation form. All that’s required here is text. Before an article is published it is optionally converted with a great deal of automated pickiness to HTML using Textile, then previewed using the site’s designated stylesheet and output template. If Textile formatting is turned on, all sorts of typographic nicey-nice is taken care of, but writers may still use their own HTML. Unlimited categories and sections for articles and links can be created; these are edited at will. Listing current articles is easy, as is finding old articles to edit using keyword searches. Writers can solicit comments for articles and easily customize their display, as well as stay on top of comments in one place. Up-to-the-minute visitor logs are included, as are most of the goofy widgets used on this site, such as referrer logging, Google Hilite and zip page compression. Lists of links are easily maintained and automatically generated; categorization and custom sorting (e.g., by last name) of link lists is a no-brainer. Pages are dynamically generated from a database, so site updates and changes to design templates are rendered to the site the instant they are saved. Uploading and linking images: easy as pie. Pinging and ponging and automatic RSS generation of course. In the next couple weeks I’ll be looking for volunteers willing to let me install and set up a site for them. If this is of interest, let me know. I’ll be soliciting hardcore testers afterward, but first I want to try to see if it’s really as simple to use as I hope. [_Go_]

bl0gging tool
03/19/2005 03:17 AM
Yahoo is developing a free service designed to let users stay in touch with friends, family, and co-workers via new and existing Yahoo services. The service will include the company's first blogging tool, according to a company executive. Called Yahoo 360, the service will enter a restricted beta period on March 29, when it will be available to select users invited by Yahoo to try it out. Yahoo will expand the beta testing in coming weeks, and has set up a waiting list for interested users at http://360.yahoo.com/reg/beta_list.html. Like similar offerings recently introduced by competitors Microsoft and Lycos, Yahoo 360 provides blogging within a broader service whose main aim is to serve as a communications tool between users and acquaintances. Similar to Microsoft's Space and Lycos' Circles, Yahoo 360 lets users do things such as publish blogs, share content, and post pictures, while keeping a tight grip on who is allowed to visit the Web site.

The Local Installation Source Tool is a wizard to help manage your Local Installation Source (LIS) on computers running Microsoft Office 2003. The LIS Tool allows you to enable or disable LIS, and to move the MsoCache folder to a new volume. This download is intended for use by customers and network administrators with LIS issues who contact Microsoft Product Support Services. Local Installation Source is a Setup feature. When a user installs Microsoft Office 2003 from a CD or a compressed CD image on the network, Setup copies any required installation files to a hidden folder on the local computer. Microsoft Windows Installer uses this local installation source to install Office, and the local source remains available for repairing, reinstalling or updating Office later on. Users can install features on demand or run Setup in maintenance mode to add new features without their original media.

While much of the blogging world has been ga-ga over getting into the Democratic National Convention, it's tough to find anything interesting going on among the convention bloggers (to their credit, go turn on CSPAN today and see for yourself how boring it is). While our own Jessamyn is there (here are profiles of everyone going), I've found the strange CNN/Technorati partnership to be the most useful thing. Technorati founder David Sifry is basically doing a metafilter of all convention blogs over on CNN as the daily blog roundup, highlighting the posts worth reading among the participants.

Elizabeth Lane Lawley: Beyond Blogging

An excellent look at the entire ecosystem of blogging as opposed to the rampant explorations of specific microcosms.  [Via The Shifted Librarian]

One thing that is missing from the discussion is referrer logs.

Liz Goes Beyond Blogging

Liz Goes Beyond Blogging 11/04/2003 08:17 PM

I haven't been blogging much because I just found a wireless hot spot (albeit for $8.95 a day), but now Liz Lawley is speaking and I'm happy to say that she is just as interesting in person as she is on her blog. Her topic now is "Beyond Blogging: Where Next with Blogs and Blogging."

Liz is on a campaign to stop using the word "blog" because she thinks it's an ugly word, so she's gone back to using the term "weblog." This, of course, contrasts with Terry Huwe's comment in the current issue of Computers in Libraries that anything called "blogging" has to be a little fun (sorry it's not available online). At this morning's keynote, the panel referred to F. Scott Fitzgerald's quote about being able to keep two contradictory thoughts at the same time, so now I feel like I've come full circle for the day.

"How many of you with you could Google your office? I can Google my brain (via her blog)."

"Bloggers are not a unified community, nor are blogs a unified commodity."

"The term "weblog" will become meaningless because the software can be used so differently and for different purposes. Just because something is called a "book" doesn't mean it's like every other book. We need to start thinking of this as a medium."

"Blogs aren't really on a topic anymore than people are. In the long term, categorization isn't going to get us what I want because you can't categorize blogs, but microcontent (like the Internet Topic Exchange) will."

Liz doesn't use an aggregator for reading blogs because she likes the visual interface of blogs. She likes the binding and feel of books, she likes the native view of blogs.

Liz showed All Consuming and noted that can buy the book or find who's been writing about it. It's too bad she couldn't say you could see if your library owns the book.

Liz is highlighting the community aspect of blogs, especially via comments. Personally, I think it's too bad that libraries don't understand this and always turn off comments. She's also bravely explaining trackback. I say "bravely" because it's already been a long day with four other programs about blogging (yay - a blogging track at a librarian conference!), so I know a lot of those folks are already on overload. I'm still glad she's mentioning it, though, and hey, she is discussing the risks.

Oooh - she said "wiki!" Oooh - and it's the Atom wiki! Daring, daring, brave Miss Liz! You'll be answering all dem questions about wikis now. :-)  "Ego can be a real barrier to collaborative development." Liz says, "Wikis scare librarians. A lot." Heh.

Ha - she just created a page on the Atom wiki called "GuidetoSite and she's building a page. "This is both terrifying and exhilerating to people who deal with information. I'm still not sure which side I come down on."

How do we generate content collectively at the same time? Liz started her blog last year after she read Dan Gillmor's site as he was posting them to his blog. He included notes and links that made her re-think her interpretation of the sessions.

The first question after Liz's presentation is about security and password-protecting blogs. I feel very confident in saying that this is the first question asked after every blog presentation at a library conference. We are sooooo paranoid. The second question is about building community, especially as noted in Liz's class. Now we're getting somewhere.

I don't know what they'll ask me, but if you - worthy denizens of the blogosphere - learn anything new from it you ought to be ashamed of yourself. (I'm guessing, "So, what is a blog?" will come up in the first 15 seconds.) I assume it'll air on Monday night at 7pm, on Channel 2 in Boston. Now it's off to the gym to lose 40 pounds. Also, does anyone have a spare toupee, or a dead squirrel, or something? Thx....

Orkut members launch Orkut Paranoia
community about Orkut TOS on Orkut
02/10/2004 10:42 PM
Geez. My head is spinning. Anyway, BoingBoing reader Adam fields points us to a new "Orkut community" (one of many online affinity groups within the social networking service), called "Orkut Paranoia" (link requires free membership). Adam says, "This formed out of some interesting discussion we've had about what's going on... summarized in this blog post:"
1) Orkut claims irrevocable unlimited license rights to everything you post. Most people don't understand what that means. One example of this is that many of my friends have posted pictures that I've taken. This is probably not a problem, generally, but they've granted Orkut a license to use them without consulting me, and created a legal tangle should I have a problem with that, forcing me to have to perform a legal struggle with Orkut, because of their unwitting actions. I think this is rude behavior on the part of Orkut, but their prerogative to demand.
2) Orkut may share personal information with Google in an unrestricted way. Google is unwilling (so far) to discuss what use they may make of that information.
3) Google's privacy policy possibly has some holes in it with regards to data collected by way of means other than use of the google.com website.

I suspect that Orkut is a way for Google to gather personal information about their clientele for marketing purposes, and to try to form a more solid relationship beyond "I just use Google for search because it's convenient". This is not terribly nefarious, but the kind of data that could be collected to do so has wide potential for abuse, and people should be aware that that's what's going on. Some may not care, but many people I know are signing up without reading or understanding the implications of the above three points.
