Online Music Download Services Compared

Online Music Download Services Compared 04/11/2005 11:01 AM

et_musicserv.jpgIt's probably not news to those of you knee-deep in portable music players, but ExtremeTech has a nice round-up of the current crop of music download services, from iTunes to Napster to AllOfMP3. You know my take on all this (favorite player: iTunes; favorite service: AllOfMP3), but I have to agree with Dave Salvator when he says that Napster To Go is probably the most compelling service out there right now. It's legal, according to the RIAA and copyright structure, and lets you fill up compatible portable players for not a lot of money. I'll only choke down DRM if I have to, though, so it's still quasi-legal Russian AACs for me.

Anyway, if you don't really know what's up with above-the-board music downloading services, this is a good place to start.

A series of moves by digital media giants suggest further developments in the growing world of music downloading. Sony decided to allow music files in the popular MP3 format to be played in its devices, a change from its policy restricting usage only to its own Atrac format.

At the same time, Yahoo and Microsoft are exploring using instant message applications to support copyright-clear music file sharing. Both companies recently entered the music downloading market.

American colleges are increasingly turning to such download services as an alternative to copyright problems with peer-to-peer filesharing.

Americans continue to download media files , according to a new study from the Pew Internet and American Life Project . That behavior is divided between authorized services, such as iTunes or Napster 2.0, and the world of unauthorized, or illicit, filesharing. Broadband users, such as many students, tend to be skeptical of governmental efforts to curb illicit downloading.

Changes to the Windows program will include deleting references to Media Player from product documentation, boxes and help files. Alterations also include creating a software package that allows consumers to put back the programs and settings that were removed from the Media Player-less version, which EU regulators demanded Microsoft to offer consumers.

After reading a forum post yesterday inquiring about DSL vs. cable download speeds (specifically Cox Cable), I though I’d write about one of OS X’s more underappreciated applications. Let’s face it. If you’re using OS X, you’re using the Internet; and if you’re using the Internet, you’re looking for one thing: speed. For most people, dial-up just doesn’t cut it anymore, and for some, cable speeds still aren’t enough. While Safari and Camino have taken care of many gripes about page...
