Shop modem for free

The Computer Shop UK has a deal on a PC that comes with a firmware-locked modem that can only dial one ISP, Supanet. In order to get unlocked, you need to pay a pound a minute to call their support line and then fork over £60 so they can post you a CD that will restore your modem to good working order.

Yoz has the deal, and a link to a utility that can unlock your modem without paying Computer Shop's ransom. Link

T-Mobile Blackberry Crippled? 12/25/2004 05:18 PM

tmobile_blackberry7230.jpg imageIt has been called to my attention that T-Mobile's Blackberry users may be getting the big stinky shaft when it comes to using third-party apps. There's extensive discussion on the topic at HowardForums and PDAStreet, but the message seems pretty clear: customers aren't getting what they're paying for, and they're mighty peeved. The issue seems to stem from the fact that TMO users on the $5 WAP plan were working around that plan's limitations and handing themselves unlimited access; TMO's "fix"—apparently blocking everything other than port 80 WAP traffic—may have filled the $5 plan loophole, but it also seems to have crippled the access of Blackberry users, restricting them to the built-in web and mail apps. Potential Blackberry buyers beware. (Thanks, Scott!)

Clay Shirky tried to use some crippled software to rip a DVD, and it didn't work. The software was apparently written by legally paranoid people who are trying to diguise their paranoia by blaming The Man. The law does not forbid software from copying unencrypted DVDs (all burned DVDs are unencrypted) -- hence the existence of Nero, Popcorn, etc. It is a shame that so much voluntarily crippled software and hardware is out there, but let's not lay all the blame on the law.

The Walgreens-branded PureDigital camera is a "disposable" digital cam, requiring that you bring the device to a Walgreens to have your pix "developed" (printed and/or exported). A hacker has cracked the device, so that you can add Smartmedia memory and export pictures to your PC at home, reusing the camera.
you will see there is a daughter board on there with the nand flash for picture storage .. if you remove that board you can add a smartmedia socket and using smartmedia card you will be able to get the pics with a smartmedia reader standard jpg's but it will not do more that 25 pics still (think its using fat12)..

Computer Glitch Gives Free Gas, But
Stores Your ID For Police
05/05/2004 04:13 AM
Everyone knows that gas prices have been hovering around all time highs lately in the US, so imagine the joy that some people felt when it was discovered that a computer glitch at a certain gas station chain meant you could get free gas if you inserted your driver's license instead of your credit card. The glitch went unnoticed by the company (though, very noticed by customers) for three weeks causing thousands of dollars in losses for the company. The only problem is that, while the machines might not have charged users, it did store all the data from the driver's license. In other words, if you took part, the police may be knocking on your door with a bill - and a misdemeanor fraud charge.

Unlock your GSM Cellphone

Unlock your GSM Cellphone 05/27/2004 01:58 PM

I was recently overseas and had my GSM T-Mobile phone with me. I figured I would run out get a pre-paid sim card and have local cell service while in the country I was in. To my surprise I could not get the SIM card to work in the phone. I was a bit pissed. But to my surprise a friend of mine sent me a link to this article and now I have the unlock code to my cell phone and when I am overseas again I will get a local pre-paid SIM card and be in business. How to unlock your phone

How to unlock your phone 05/24/2004 09:01 AM
On Popular Science, an article on getting your mobile phone unlocked. Here in London, there're shops that advertise phone unlocking on practically every block, but it's almost unheard-of in the USA:
While number portability may have freed your cell digits, your phone is still a ball and chain, locked into one carrier's service. These subsidy locks keep you from walking away before the provider can recover that big discount you got when you bought the phone.

But it doesn't have to be so. If you have a GSM phone, you can unlock it and switch to any GSM network carrier (the big three are AT&T, Cingular and T-Mobile). You can also take an unlocked phone overseas (most of the world uses GSM) and use it on a local network to avoid paying for international roaming, or even buy a European phone (they tend to be ahead of us in cell tech) and use it here. Have an old phone lying around? Unlock it and keep it as a spare.
