Fox sued for trademarked slogan. Outfoxed has taken the rumblings you've heard online for ages mainstream: that Fox News claims fairness, but is grinding a sharp ax for one team. Now the battle ticks up a notch as alt-newspaper service Altnet takes them to court.

  • NY Times: Fox News Rejects Left-Wing Magazine Ad. While the ad will appear on Time Warner's CNN, as well as NBC Universal's MSNBC and Bravo, it will not appear on Fox News, a division of the News Corporation whose chairman and chief executive is Rupert Murdoch. "They rejected it out of hand," said Arthur Stupar, senior vice president for circulation at The Nation. "I find it ironic. They are the G.O.P. cable station, a champion of free markets, and they got spooked at the thought of running an ad that doesn't publish spin or serve the agenda of corporate conglomerates."

The biggest IPO this year, so far? It wasn't Google. Google didn't even make second place. Two other companies raised more money in their IPOs earlier this year, but didn't generate nearly the same interest -- and so some are wondering why tech companies seem to get a disproportionate amount of attention compared to non-tech company IPOs. The general conclusion "tech is sexy," may only explain half the story (though, it's clearly part of it). Another part of the attention given to tech companies, generally, is based on their potential for growth, whereas many non-tech companies that go public don't have the same meteoric growth potential (or corresponding risk).

But they appear to be one of the few people who think so, if the comments of the organization's own head of policy is any indication.

    Mobl0gging Re(de)fined 09/19/2004 11:52 AM
Dave Winer (after talking with Robert Scoble) writes a posting that decons tructs moblogging. This helps clarify the genre for me. Crucially, he points out that this isn't just about pictures. It's about mobility, and on-the-fly posting from whatever location strikes you as useful. It also requires hardware designed for the purpose. I have a terrific RSS reader for my mobile phone/PDA. Now I want something that lets me post as easily, and haven't found anything to match my needs. The software is improving, though. When I think about reader contributions to tomorrow's journalism, one of the most important roles will be presence. That is, when average folks are at a scene where the professional journalists are not, they can capture -- through observation, audio recordings, photos and video -- the elemental data of the situation. Moblogging is an essential part of this.

    Fax.com Fined $5.38 Million... Again?

    Fax.com Fined $5.38 Million... Again? 01/05/2004 09:12 PM
Okay. I'm confused. Back in August of 2002, the FCC fined Fax.com $5.38 million for sending out junk faxes in violation of junk fax laws. So, why is it suddenly being reported again that the FCC has fined Fax.com $5.38 million? Is this a different $5.38 million or is it related to the same fine from a year and a half ago? If it's the same fine, why is it being reported again? Fax.com, of course, is the junk fax leader and has been sued for $2.2 trillion by Steve Kirsch for their faxing activities. Also, back in September, there was a report suggesting that Fax.com was set to announce that they were going out of business while really setting up shop again under a variety of cover names to avoid these tricky legal problems.
