White men bad; white dogs worse

White men bad; white dogs worse 04/05/2005 09:24 AM

We spent the weekend in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania with an anthropologist friend who has two 3-year-old bitches (Lab and Husky) and 4 acres of land on which Alex and Sammy could play with them.  One of the nice things about colleges located in areas where real estate is cheap is that the professors live close to the campus and are available to students for informal dinners and shared extracurricular activities.  Thus over the weekend we encountered a few other Gettysburg College professors.  I asked one of them whether faculty could bring their dogs to work.  She replied "The college's Affirmative Action lawyer, before she left, made up a lot of new rules.  One of them was that junior and senior faculty could not sleep together.  Another was to ban dogs in the buildings."

This is a good measure of how desperate PhDs are for jobs as college professors.  The college pays lower salaries, to people of the same age, as the public high school down the street.  The high school teachers were able to go to work at age 22 without suffering through a long period of starvation wages as graduate assistants.  The high school teachers are union members who ever have to worry about losing their job, compared to the college professors who live for 7 years in fear of being tossed out as a middle-aged has-been ("denied tenure" is the polite term for this event).  And now these poor souls are expected to get through their day without a dog at their side and without the possibility of an interlude with a more senior professor.

[Note to parents:  if you want to know why tuition prices have risen so fast, consider that a very small liberal arts school was paying a full-time lawyer to work on affirmative action; Walmart has a "Chief Diversity Officer" but they had $billions in revenue over which to spread the cost.]

My favorite applications

My favorite applications 09/09/2004 03:27 AM

When I was at Linz, a bunch of people made me provide a list of all of the applications that I'm running on my Mac. I realize I do this to people too. I've seen people make lists of their favorite applications on their blogs, but I realized that it might be better to do on a wiki. I've made a list of my favorite applications. Feel free to click on any of the application links and comment on the page for the application. Also, feel free to make a similar page for yourself and list YOUR favorite applications. If we can get a bunch of people on the wiki with their lists, it might end up being an interesting resource.

Is there something like this elsewhere already?

"Michael Lohman is sick" read the email to students in MAT 308: Theory of Games, explaining why the Princeton mathematics graduate student had not yet graded their homework. Not sick as in "flu"-sick, but sick as in "squirting his bodily fluids into unsuspecting women's drinks and cutting off locks of their hair for unspeakable acts involving mittens"-sick. And not just any women, but exclusively Asian women. An extreme case, to be sure, but the Western"ota ku" lusting after (and often having much success with) Asian women is a quite familiar and often disturbing< /a> trope for those of us who have spent much time among the disaffected English majors, anime fans, martial artists, dirty old men, and various other Asiaphiles. Yet decidedly non-nerdy folks have expressed a definite preference for Asian women as well. Where does this preference (which certainly goes both ways) come from? As such interracial couplings increase, should we even try to distinguish relationships based on "Suzie Wong" stereotypes or even outright economic exploitation, and relationships that are somehow more "acceptable?" Or will non-Asian guys with Asian girls constantly be forced to prove it's not just a case of "Yellow Fever?"

My Favorite Is the Gateway 2000 Ad 08/19/2004 12:08 AM
PC World, 1990

"Last night I spent some time reading an issue of PC World magazine from September, 1990....

Just a few of the many interesting things in this issue:

  • News: Lotus Sues Borland (I was actually hired as an expert witness in that case, but it never went to trial).
  • Microsoft Ad: $50 upgrade to Windows 3.0!
  • Ad for Gateway 2000: Fully loaded 25 Mhz 486, 4 Meg RAM, 150 Meg hard drive, VGA: $5,295.
  • Funk Software ad: Sideways, print your 1-2-3 spreadsheets sideways on your dot matrix printer (remember that?)
  • News item: Symantec/Norton Merger Refocuses Utility Wars.
  • Excel tip: Save a group of related files by using File - Save Workspace. This tip still works today!
  • Ad for GEnie (an online service). It cost $6.00 per hour at 1200 baud non-prime time.
  • Ad for Software Carousel, a task-switching environment for DOS. "Use the software you already own - 1-2-3, WordPerfect, dBASE, Sidekick." I used to love that program." [J-Walk Blog]

Favorite Political films

Favorite Political films 07/25/2004 07:31 PM

Rox Populi writes.....

Some of my favorite political films, in no particular order, include:

  • Wag the Dog

  • Bob Roberts

  • Nixon

  • Election

  • Henry V

  • The War Room

  • The Candidate

  • All the President's Men

  • Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

  • The Manchurian Candidate

What are your favorite political films?

[Rox Populi]

Marc's additions......

I'd add these other political films:

Citizen Kane
The Harold Washington Story (never produced)
De Mayr (never produced.....)

I'd suggest using Mike Royko's book "Boss Richard J. Daley" as the basis of a script for "Da Mayr". I was 25 before I ever knew a different mayor in Chicago, besides old Dick Daley. He defined old school politics.

The page might look a little familiar to the Google that we know and love, but this service will let you search for sites that were added from today to last year, and everything in between. This can be very helpful, and it's a cool thing to take advantage of. They also have a collection of various Google logos that have been created by both Google and users themselves. It's interesting to see some of the designs that have been made. Some of them are actually pretty funny. If you have your own version of the now famous logo, submit it to them so they can place it on their home page.

I worked with 'em and set up a $5 discount on the purchase price (use 3LEU85XT7V for the electronic or boxed version on their site). This should be good for every Gnomie out there, and ya can't get it anywhere else. You should see "Lockergnome $5 Off Coupon" show up in your cart. I love software companies!...

Here's Dan's comments after the launch party of his new book "We, the Media". NOTE: I got to bring my twins Aron and Jacob to the party. That was fun showing them off.

Here's Dan's post....

J.D. Lasica and Brian Dear were among the folks who came to last night's gathering celebrating the book launch and the relocation of Creative Commons to its new offices in San Francisco. I was honored by the presence of so many fine folks.

The book was published under a Creative Commons license, permitting non-commercial use of the material as long as people give it proper attribution and add their "remixes" back into the world under a similar license. (The book will be online in full very soon on the publisher's official site.)

In my brief remarks to the folks who'd gathered last evening, I talked about the great value Creative Commons is giving to all of us, by doing its part to restore a tiny bit of balance in the copyright regime. I doubt many publishers would have allowed me to live up to what I've been saying on copyright these past few years, and I'm grateful that I have a publisher who totally gets it.

(Cross-posted to We the Media.)

[Dan Gillmor]

Brian Dear and JD Lasica also had their own posts on the party. Here's some of Brian's shots.....
