New License Fee May Face Operators
New License Fee May Face Operators
01/26/2004 06:27 PMA patent awarded to Nomadix last week could force hotspot operators to
pay royalties to Nomadix or change the way their networks work:
Nomadix received a patent for technology that it claims it developed
first which allows hotspot operators to redirect customers to a
sign-up page, often referred to as a "gateway" page, when they first
fire up their computers. "We're the first to develop this technology
and we've been doing it for a while," said Joel Short, chief
technology officer and senior vice president for Nomadix. Many hotspot
networks, particularly the larger ones that charge for access,
redirect customers to a specific home page where they can sign in or
pay for access. Often their methods for redirect were developed
in-house. Redirection involves the access point or back-end system
capturing any Web page request from an unauthenticated user on the
network and redirecting them to a page that contains login or usage
information. "Some have copied what we've done," Short said. "We stand
behind our intellectual property and now we're going to encourage
those folks who provide that method to license the technology from
us." STSN, Hilton Hotels, and some McDonald's restaurants have
licensed Nomadix technology, but T-Mobile, Wayport, Cometa, Surf and
Sip, and other hotspot operators don't have licenses. STSN and Nomadix
have both received investments from the Intel Capital wireless fund.
Most of the non-licensed operators have been reluctant to discuss the
new patent. Cometa declined to comment on the matter. T-Mobile has
been working on a comment since the middle of last week but has yet to
provide a reaction to the new patent. Wayport and Surf and Sip are
looking into the issue further before commenting. If Nomadix chooses
to pursue companies that use redirect without licensing its
technology, the operators will either have to pay license fees, argue
the reasonableness of the patent in court, or forgo using redirect.
Redirection allows new or existing customers to avoid installing
client software for connecting to a network, although some networks
are moving towards requiring special hotspot software, which would
sidestep this issue. Many free community networks have also used
redirection as a method of asking users to acknowledge that they are
agreeing to a set of principles to use the free networks. Schlotzsky's
Deli and many free or sponsored commercial networks also employ the
method. Companies are not required to enforce patents as they are
trademarks;...

Five Innovative Firms Face The
Competition
Five Innovative Firms Face The
Competition
09/08/2004 12:32 PMInnovators don't always survive. In fact, there are plenty of stories
of innovative companies who blazed the path for others to follow, but
who were trampled by all those fast followers. News.com has written
up a piece looking at five such innovative companies, all of whom are
now facing strong competition from established companies:
Netflix, TiVo,
PalmSource, RIM and Vonage. All five have their similarities.
They all came first in their space, and they have customers who
absolutely adore them. Now, they all have some pretty big
competition. So, the question for all of these companies is whether
they can adapt and stay ahead, or if they'll be historical footnotes.
All have been adjusting, from Netflix and TiVo's
rumor
ed deal with each other, to the new
smartphone
RIM released, to Vonage's push to get bundled in with Linksys and
Netgear equipment. Whether or not that's enough remains to be seen.
It's both interesting (and encouraging) to note that, while all of
these companies seem to have various patents, none seem to simply be
relying solely on those patents as a competitive advantage, but rather
are realizing they really do need to offer more innovative products.
Given the trend lately of companies using patent licensing to impede,
rather than promote, innovative uses of technology, this is a good
thing. As we've said before, sustainable competitive advantage is the
real
myth
of IT. Building up successive, fleeting competitive advantages is how
a company really needs to maintain its position or grow long-term.

Increased Bird Aggressiveness: Is There
Something Ominous Going On?
Increased Bird Aggressiveness: Is There
Something Ominous Going On?
06/17/2005 03:27 PM

Perhaps it's just because I'm
paying closer attention, but in the past few months I have observed an
alarming number of instances of groups of small birds savagely and
relentlessly pursuing and attacking larger birds. The first time I
noticed it I put it down to defence of the nest, mates
or young, but I have seen it so
often
lately, and in such Hitchcockian extremes (I watched a crow fleeing
frantically from a dozen much smaller birds, for a full fifteen
minutes, and heard it utter what were obviously anguished cries of
pain
at the ferocity of the attack) that I'm wondering if there's something
more sinister going on. I
understand
redwing blackbirds are known to gang up on crows, but on at least two
of these occasions the gang-attack 'victims' have been jays and even
hawks.
I've seen a raft of instances where birds attacked others with such
frenzy that both the attackers and victims flew recklessly into
oncoming road traffic.
These avian participants are so common in the summer here that I'm
sure
I would have noticed this phenomenon before if it had been anywhere
near as frequent or belligerent. And this week's CSM reports
an increase in bird-on-human and bird-on-car
attacks as well, and chalks it up to encroachment on bird habitat. Has
anyone else notice increased bird aggressiveness? Anyone have any
theories or even intriguing hypotheses? Might there be a connection to
the surge in West Nile Virus among some of these birds?

Increased Pump Diaphragm Life
Increased Pump Diaphragm Life
09/22/2004 02:18 AMRecently, a manufacturer of metal soup cans located in New Jersey
approached Blacoh Fluid Control with a problem. They were using 2"
air diaphragm pumps attached to the bottom of a 35' tall tank to
transfer a solution used to line the cans. Their problem was that the
pumps were fitted with costly PTFE diaphragms that failed after a
short period of time due to the high positive inlet pressure to the
pump. Additionally, the pump’s sealing clamp bands leaked, causing
excessive downtime and sanitation concerns. Finally, the pumps were
noisy and vibrated violently during normal operation. To eradicate
these issues, Blacoh Fluid Control, in cooperation with their local
distributor, installed one 2” J2400T Stainless Steel and PTFE inlet
stabilizer. This created a smooth flow into the pump, which lessened
strain on the pump’s sealing clamps, reduced noise and vibration, and
dramatically increased pump diaphragm life. [PRWEB Sep 22, 2004]
