More Unexpected Convergence: Printing
From Your TV
08/03/2004 02:18 PMThe folks who think that it's weird to mix a camera and a phone will
love this one. Epson is jumping on the convergence bandwagon with a
plan to
turn your TV into a
printer. The idea is to have printable data sent with TV
programming. For example, if you're watching a commercial and are
interested in the product, you could immediately print out a catalog.
Of course, I imagine that shows like The Daily Show might have a blast
with the possibilities of this kind of technology.

Snakes, Sharks and Unexpected
Associations
Snakes, Sharks and Unexpected
Associations
01/07/2004 04:29 PMI love how the Web is full of unexpected associations that end up
exposing me to new things.
After reading Don Box's post about Frank Zappa's "Baby Snakes" DVD, I immediately bought a copy on Amazon.com. I'd seen Baby Snakes years
ago, and although I wasn't wild about most of the music on it (I
usually love Zappa, but there's too much of his "gotta pay the bills
with cheap laughs" lyrics here), I remember being completely blown
away by Bruce
Bickford's stunning animation.
A couple of days later the DVD arrived, and once again I was amazed
by Bickford's mind-boggling work. I Googled for more about Bickford, and
discovered that a documentary about him
will premiere soon. Reading on, I noticed that the documentary's
musical score was created by Shark
Quest, a group I'd never heard of.
I figured any group that could write the score for a film about
Bruce Bickford would be worth listening to, so back to Amazon.com I
went. A minute later I ordered a Shark
Quest CD, which I'm listening to right now - and I think it's
great.
So, thanks Don, for introducing me to some new music :)

New Raymond Scott album: The Unexpected
New Raymond Scott album: The Unexpected
02/10/2004 04:10 PM
There's a new Raymond Scott album! If you
don't know Scott, here's a quick bio: he was a bandleader in the 40s,
well-known for quirky, whimsical songs (many were used in Looney
Tunes). In the 1950s he became interested in electronic music, and
composed amazing pre-Moog marvels, including two albums designed to
soothe babies. The Secret 7 is a group of jazz players headed by Scott
and the 1959 album they recorded is called "The Unexpected." You can
hear a Real Audio sample on the site. Be sure to look at the rest of
Basta Music's offerings. They're a wonderful label out of Holland.

Proxim's Loss May be Industry Loss
Proxim's Loss May be Industry Loss
09/23/2004 01:03 PMProxim lost a legal battle with Symbol and the result may be that
Wi-Fi vendors will be required to pay license royalties to Symbol:
Proxim had to pony up $23 million in damages and must pay two percent
royalties, though every other vendor is on the hook for six percent.
The question will be whether Symbol decides to chase down everyone
else. Symbol claims that some vendors are already paying the royalties
but it wouldn't name which. As Peter Judge points out in an email to
Wi-Fi Networking News, it will be interesting to watch if Symbol
approaches Cisco and how that interaction plays out. Cisco, with its
deep pockets, could afford to fight a legal battle that argues against
the recent ruling in Symbol's favor. Proxim basically said it gave in
because it would have had to post a bond for a large part of the $26
million if it continued the fight and the company didn't want that
hanging over its head. In just about any situation, licensing can be
sticky. On one hand, companies should benefit if everyone else uses
technology that they develop. But one of the reasons that Wi-Fi has
taken off so quickly and so widely is because the cost of products
dropped so dramatically. If vendors had to pay licenses on many
different components of a product, the price would have to rise which
at some point slows down growth. We'll just have to wait and see if
Symbol does chase everyone down and if so, what affect the six percent
will have on vendors....

08/11/2004 05:03 AMThe Devil You Don’t Know: The Unexpected Future of Open
Access Publishing by Joseph J. Espositohttp://firstmo
nday.org/issues/issue9_8/esposito/With the advent of
the Internet and online publishing, the notion has arisen that access
to the world’s research publications could be made available to one
and all for free, presumably by shifting the costs to other places in
the value chain and disintermediating publishers, a circumstance
called Open Access (OA) publishing. While there are many hopes
embedded in this view (lower costs, wider access, etc.), it appears
more likely that Open Access will come about not through a revolution
in the world of legacy publishing, but through upstart media built
with the innate characteristics of the Internet in mind. An
unanticipated outcome of this situation will be that the overall cost
of research publications will rise, though the costs will be borne by
different players, primarily authors and their proxies.

Infineon settles with Rambus, but who

03/22/2005 03:36 PMIn a move that ends a long-running and convoluted legal saga, Infineon

a loss for Rambus, but it will probably help the company in its other
pending suits.
Infineon found guilty
Infineon found guilty
09/15/2004 07:29 PMRAM maker Infineon have been fined $160 million dollars by the US
anti-trust department for illegally fixing prices between 1999 and
2002. Infineon pled guilty, and will be paying the fine off in
segments until 2009.
An Infineon rep told The Register that they had changed their ways;
they'd only done this to certain OEM customers and they have
"already been in contact with these customers and has achieved or
is in the process of achieving settlements with all of these OEM
customers."
PC makers like Dell has long raised the issue of the major RAM makers
illegally maintaining high prices. Other major RAM makers - Samsung,
Hynix, Micron - have also been under investigation. Dell CEO Michael
Dell has described the group as a ‘Cartel’. As part of Infineon’s
settlement with the DOJ, the 3rd largest in the division’s history,
the company will aid the government in investigations into the other
companies.
The memory market has long been expensive and debatably over-priced.
Consumers have been forced into high prices, illegally. One hopes the
decision could change this.
