Siemens Gigaset SL740 Land Line Cell

09/22/2004 08:38 AM
Here's another one of those analog home phones
masquerading as a cellphone, this time from Siemens Mobile. The
Gigaset SL740 has all the major functions you'd expect from a mobile,
like a built-in camera, MMS and SMS messaging capabilities, and
picture caller identification. And no cords, which is usually part of
the package (or isn't, I guess. You know what I mean). It's always a
little amusing to see all these cell phone features being backported
to something like a land line, though, even though it makes perfect
sense. I don't use POTS phones anymore, but you might as well toss in
all the gee whiz functionality for people that still do.
Still, clearly a temporary bridge solution. It shouldn't be too
much longer before we can toss the wired phone network entirely (or
move it all to VoIP). (Thanks, Frank!)

06/22/2005 02:41 AMAlice’s Rant of the Day:For years I have been ranting like a crazy
person about the fact that land line phones had fallen dangerously
behind their cell phone brethren. Why couldn’t a cordless home phone
have a color display and custom ringtones that tie to the incoming
phone number? The latest phone I got from AT&T lets me put blocky
black and white cat and horse icons on the phone’s LCD display, but

Will Carriers Kill The iTunes Phone?
Will Carriers Kill The iTunes Phone?
07/29/2004 04:48 AMApple (and Motorola) took a lot of people by surprise earlier this
week by announcing
plans to
put iTunes on a mobile phone, but they may have left out one very
important part: figuring out how the carriers get a cut. The wireless
carriers are notorious for
suppo
rting closed systems, and making sure that they get a cut of any
transaction that goes through a mobile phone. While this is a
shortsighted move that has slowed down the creation and adoption of
wireless services and applications, the carriers still insist on
sticking to that plan, under the weird belief that they know best what
applications and services subscribers will use (and pay for). So,
now, many analysts are pointing out that for all the hype surrounding
the mobile iTunes,
there's a good chance carriers won't let it run on
their phones, unless they somehow get a cut. Of course, for the
smart carrier, this is a perfectly good opportunity to open up their
offering. Giving subscribers an open platform with plenty of
applications and services should generate more interest and allow the
carrier to steal customers away from its competitors. Eventually, it
will happen, but it may take a while.

How to Kill a Cell Phone Dead Zone
06/22/2005 02:42 AMI’ll cut to the chase because if you live with a cell phone dead
zone in your home (I do), this piece probably has you drooling. The
catch is price. These solutions as you will see sounds great, but some
are close to $1,000 or involve climbing on your roof. At those prices,
I say, keep your land line and put your cell on call forwarding. By

Nigerian Worried Phone Calls May Kill
Them
07/19/2004 02:51 PMAn urban legend is making its way around Nigeria that has many people
afraid to answer their phones. Apparently, a large number of people
actually believe that
picking up
phone calls from specific numbers will kill them immediately. A
list of phone numbers is being circulated, and it must suck if you
actually have one of those phone numbers. The mobile phone operators
in the country have been trying to get the message out that this is
untrue, but apparently it's not traveling too well (one imagines the
message is not being passed along via phone calls).

EFF suing on JibJab's behalf for "This

08/02/2004 03:02 AMEFF has taken things one step further with JibJab and their endangered
political parody of This Land is Your Land (Woody Guthrie's copyright
holder has threatened to sue them for their work).
We're bringing the fight to Guthrie's rightsholders, and suing on
JibJab's behalf, "to defend JibJab's fair use and free speech rights."

EFF defending creators of This Land is
Your Land parody
07/29/2004 06:53 AMI'm proud to relate that EFF is representing Jib Jab, the creators of
the wonderful "This Land is Your Land"
Flash parody that aroused
the ire of the holder of Woody Guthrie's copyrights and resulted in a
threatened
lawuit. Here's a little bit of my cow-orker Fred von Lohmann's
letter to the copyright-holder's lawyers.
In your July 23 letter, you contend that "This Land" offers no
"satirical comment" on the Guthrie original. You are mistaken.
While your view of Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land" as being
predominantly about "the beauty of the American landscape" and "the
disenfranchisement of the underclass" is interesting, most Americans
think of the song as an iconic expression of the ideal of national
unity. Jib Jab's parody addresses, among other things, the lack of
national unity that characterizes our current political climate
(ending with the optimistic hope that unity might be rediscovered). In
short, "This Land" explores exactly the same themes as the Guthrie
original, using the parodic device of contrast and juxtaposition to
comment on the original. See Abilene Music v. Sony Music
Entertainment, 320 F .Supp.2d 84, 90-91 (S.D.N.Y. 2003) (emphasizing
the role of contrast and juxtaposition as parodic devices). The
parodic comment takes on an additional dimension of irony when viewed
in light of the often omitted closing stanzas of Guthrie's original.

Nigeria Arrests 419 Scammers
07/06/2004 01:42 PMNigeria arrests 500 suspected email
scammers: Nigeria finally took some action on 419
scammers. I hereby retract this post.
Nigeria's agency against economic and financial crime said Monday
that it had detained more than 500 suspects and seized property worth
more than $US500 million from suspected fraudsters.
[...] The EFCC had demonstrated its resolve and commitment by
arresting many previously "untouchable 419 kingpins", said Ribadu, a
former senior police intelligence officer.
Although the identities of those in EFCC custody are not formally
revealed, observers noted that they included legislators, lawyers,
politicians, bankers and public functionaries.
A couple points to note here. First, look at the type of people
arrested: lawyers, legislators (!), politicians, etc. Nice. Second,
they seized $500 million? 419 scamming was evidently going well for
these folks.
