Blog-detectives tackle suspected Mexican

Blog-detectives tackle suspected Mexican
child-porn recruitment site
07/24/2004 06:10 PM
Eduardo Arcos, editor of the Spanish-language blog ALT1040, is conducting an online investigation into a website suspected of recruiting teenage girls in Mexico for child porn. He's soliciting help from other bloggers, and using the "comment" feature in his blog as a way to exchange info with concerned citizens throughout the blogosphere. Together they're collecting data, with the apparent goal of revealing who's behind the suspect site -- and seeing to it that appropriate action is taken to protect potential victims. Here's my clunky attempt at translating Arcos' summary post:
A site called TV-whores with a theme and intentions that are very clear, contains the following text: Girls from 13 - 19 years of age: earn thousands of pesos simply by taking photographs. More information here. (...)

The page in question offers thousands of pesos to 13-19-year-old girls for taking digital photos. You don't have to be naked, you can be in a bikini or underwear, it says... but it's more than suspicious."

CutX blocks porn on Safari 07/28/2004 03:18 PM
Developer adnX Software announced on Wednesday the release of CutX, a Safari extension that adds new preference options for blocking pornographic media. When CutX comes across one of its banned keywords on a Web page or in the site's URL, it can either hide all the images on the page or block access to it. You can add keywords to the list or import them from another application as well as save its preferences at the multi-user level. A trial version is now available for download from the adnX Web site; it does not password-protect the preference settings until you pay the €19 (US$22.89) license fee. CutX requires Mac OS X v10.3 and Safari 1.2.

P2P Against Child Porn

P2P Against Child Porn 05/06/2004 01:32 AM
Last year, when other attacks against peer-to-peer file sharing systems weren't working, the entertainment industry pulled out the "porn" card, saying that the file sharing networks were chock full of child porn and it was a danger to anyone using it. Of course, you could say the same thing about the internet, but all the hype even convinced Senator Hatch to push legislation against P2P networks due to all that porn. Realizing that they had something of a PR problem on this issue, it appears the various P2P networks decided to team up and do something to show how they're actually helping to catch child pornographers. They've been working with the FBI to help them track down those responsible for child porn, and are now looking at setting up a system to let users flag child porn so that the networks (and the FBI) can track it down (though, you wonder how quickly that flag will be abused: don't like a song? call it child porn). Finally, in a move that's much more about the good publicity it can generate than actually catching pornographers, they're going to start posting pictures from the FBI's most wanted list of child pornographers on their websites.
