12/24/2004 12:16 PM
Another day, another portable media player. This
mPack P800 is of hearty, Taiwanese stock, with a heavy-lifting video
compressor that will save video at resolutions even higher than its
native 320 by 240 pixel screen. That's handy for playing back the
videos on a better quality screen, after either copying them off the
device or playing them via its video out. It supports a variety of
formats (including OGG Vorbis and Xvid) and comes in 40GB or 80GB
models. If the screen isn't a total travesty, it'll be a
contender—if it makes it stateside.

Video content goes portable with new MSN
service
03/30/2005 05:20 PMMicrosoft Corp. has launched MSN Video Downloads, which will provide
daily television programming for download to Windows Mobile-based
devicess.
MSN Video Downloads is available in the United States today at a cost
of $19.95 for a one-year premium membership to the MSN Video Downloads
service which provides access to all available videos. In addition,
people can access a limited amount of free content without a paid
membership.
Subscribers to the premium service will be able to select the content
they want to receive from the Web site. Digital videos are downloaded
daily to a Windows Media Player 10 library, ready to be synchronized
with Portable Media Centers and other devices. The video content is
compliant with PlaysForSure devices that play video, and is optimized
for Portable Media Centers and compatible with Smartphones and Pocket
PCs that support Windows Media Player 10 Mobile.
New with the final launch of the service is the ability to select the
specific content downloaded to the subscriber's Windows XP-based PC
each day. Subscribers can also activate a new automatic deleting
feature that specifies how long video from the MSN Video Downloads
directory will remain on their PC, thus avoiding a large backlog of
clips.

Yet Another Portable Video Player:

07/06/2004 03:09 PM
It won't win any prizes for
being ugly -- oh wait, yes it will; congratulations! -- but here's
another portable video player, this time from the UK: the Talitor
PV-330. It's got the usual stuff, 40GB hard drive and a 3.5-inch LCD
with a fairly low quality screen (looks like 480 x 234, although it
can't even decode at that resolution). In fact, after factoring in the
£325 purchase price I can't think of much to recommend this
thing at all, unless you've resigned yourself to stepping into the
portable video future in the most wretched way possible. (Thanks,
Joe!)

AMD chips in for portable video players
01/04/2005 11:03 AMAMD has developed a low-power chip that it thinks will make portable
video players more compelling by reducing the time needed to transfer
content to the devices. The company is expected to announce the chip
at CES (the International Consumer Electronics Show) this week.
Portable video players with the new Alchemy Au1200 processor will play
Mpeg files recorded by digital video recorders, eliminating the need
for users to change those files to a different format, a spokeperson
says. AMD has designed a reference platform for manufacturers that
includes the chip and media player software, and the company expects
devices to emerge in the second quarter of this year.

07/14/2004 11:56 AMA group of eight companies, including Warner Bros Studios and Walt
Disney, has announced plans to make available a content-management
technology, called Advanced Access Content System (AACS), that would
allow consumers to copy prerecorded digital content, such as videos,
and share it with networked and portable devices. The AACS technology
is being developed by the AACS LA to manage content stored on future
generations of prerecorded and recordable optical media, the group
said in a statement. The technology will let users make authorized
copies and share content, including high-definition video, with
home-networked devices, including PCs, and portable devices, it said.

Two S-Media Portable Video Players:
JoyToGo and Black Diamond
Two S-Media Portable Video Players:
JoyToGo and Black Diamond
06/08/2004 07:31 AM
DAPReview has shots of a couple of small, hard
drive-based video players, both with planned release dates around
September. The first is the JoyToGo (pictured left, and which I could
have sworn we'd seen before, but Google says otherwise), built around
either a 20 or 30GB 1.8" hard drive, with a 480 x 234 2.5" LCD screen,
as well as built-in speakers and SD slot. It will also allow direct
recording of video in MPEG-4 at rates of 640x480 at 25fps -- not bad,
consider that's larger than its own screen.
And even though it's only a mock-up at the moment, I can't help but
be excited by the 'Black Diamond' player, built around a tiny 1" hard
drive with an as-yet-unspecified capacity. It only has a 294 x 228
resolution (with the same 2.5" screen size as the JoyToGo), and no
speakers or anything like that, but if they could bump the resolution
of the Black Diamond up to 480 x 234, I would be happy -- honored,
even -- to carry around the little player in my pocket.
Both players are from S-Media, the makers of the moderately
successful CoCoPod hard disk player.
