Control Computers With Body Language
06/28/2004 02:37 PMWe've seen
keyless
keyboards that record finger motions to detect keystrokes. No
reason to stop with finger motions, so the next step is
full
-body gesture detection. As one would expect, this kind of
interface is showing up for
vi
deo games at first, but interestingly, there's also software that
lets TV weather forecasters control "blue-screen" maps and weather
displays with gestures. Maybe if gesture interfaces really catch on,
we'll all be using
IT sign
language. But given that mouse gestures haven't even caught on,
gesture interfaces really have to overcome the significant hurdle of
either creating a set of standardized gestures or being easy enough to
use that no standard gestures are needed.

Cory Doctorow:
Second Life, the Massively Multiplayer Online world where end users
can design and trade their own game-artifacts, is offering free
accounts to university profs to disburse to their students for the
purpose of conducting in-game classes.
In order to help teachers bring their classes to Second Life, Linden
Lab donates accounts for each student, as well as an acre of land in
the metaverse for the teacher and students to work and build on.
Afterward, anyone wishing to stay a member can do so at half price.
To date, in addition to Delwiche and Beamish, professors from San
Francisco State University, the Rochester Institute of Technology and
Vassar College have used Second Life in their courses.

MMOs discourage heroism, FRPGs encourage

08/07/2004 05:30 AMVery good Terra Nova post analyses the ways that Massively Multiplayer
games discourage the acts of heroism that made D&D so much fun to
play.
On one level, this tale highlights the plight of low levels in the
MMORPG. They pose the litmus test: do opportunities for heroism exist
for them in and amongst the treadmills? Is it ever possible for a
low-level to make a *real difference?* Perhaps, for some, an
exceptional stand by a NOOB ("newbie") party against MOB trains (large
flocks of NPC monsters) in some NOOB dungeon somewhere, qualifies. But
is there a more fundamental difference?
Consider. Can one make the argument that MMORPGs, as an adventuring
platform, have gone astray with player = single(few)-avatar
assumption? Because of the investment of time (read treadmills),
social and emotional capital, players are practically limited by the
number of characters they can play. Consequently, they are loath to
get in "over their heads" and virtual worlds are loath to offer dire
scenarios with only heroic exits for a few. Hardly a profound point,
but the question: is such a dynamic, in some guise, necessary for the
organic emergence of heroic narratives in an MMORPG?

09/15/2004 09:49 PMWorried about carpal tunnel? Maybe you should stop using your hands
altogether when controlling your computer. A Canadian inventor has
developed a
system to control a
mouse by where your nose is pointed, while letting you click with
the blink of an eye (left eye, left click; right eye, right click).
The idea, of course, behind this "nouse" system is to use it for
people with disabilities. Of course, as someone points out in the
article, the fact that using this could make you look quite silly may
not go over particularly well. I also wonder how it deals with just
regular blinking.

Expressions in CSS
Expressions in CSS
08/16/2004 12:08 PMAbout Dynamic Properties: Ever heard
of IE's CSS "expression" property? It allows you to set a CSS
property not to a constant, but to the result of a JavaScript
expression. Like this:
p
{
width:expression(400 + "px");
}
What this lets you do, according to this really
good article, is make IE emulate the ma
x-width CSS property that it really should support like all other
good browsers. Like this:
p
{
max-width:800px;
width:expression(document.body.clientWidth > 800? "800px": "auto"
);
}
Ugly hack, but crappy browsers will do that.
