Hybrid Cars Get a Big Push; Not So Fast,
Others Say (Los Angeles Times)

Los Angeles Times - SACRAMENTO — With gas prices so high as to cause vertigo, California's elected officials are racing to shower fuel-efficient hybrid car owners with the kinds of exclusive road privileges all drivers covet.

Tow Truck Drivers Push Cars into

Tow Truck Drivers Push Cars into
Tow-Away Zone then hold cars for ransom
03/22/2005 04:59 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: Tian says: "On March 7th, I took photos of a tow truck driver that damages a vehicle then tries to get away in Phoenix.

Sunday night (March 20th), Phoenix news channel 15 used a bait car and discovered that local tow truck company(s) would actually push cars into tow-away zone first, then held the cars as "hostages" for ransom."

I just watched it. The TV crew set up a white SUV as a bait car, and parked it legally. Time and time again, tow trucks would push the car into a red zone, snap a photo, and tow it away. Of course, when the TV crew showed the owner of the tow truck company how his drivers had pushed the car into the red lane, the owner denied responsibility. "I didn't push it," he said.

Arizona lawmakers have been half-heartedly writing legislation to stop this (isn't it illegal to do this already) but the tow truck has so far been able to convince them not to ruin the good thing they've got going. Link to RealMedia file. The segment starts about 20:15 into the broadcast.

Do Hybrid Cars Pose Added Rescue Risks? 05/26/2004 07:38 PM
?Hybrid cars are hot sellers for today?s gas-conscious American drivers. But for emergency workers who might have to rescue someone from a high-tech wreck, the vehicles may be literally too hot to handle. The technology behind hybrids - cars that use both a gasoline engine and electric motor for propulsion - may save on fuel for the driver, but it could also put rescuers at risk of serious electrical shock.?

Those new hybrid cars that all you hippies love may have an unforeseen danger in an accident: high-voltage shock for rescue workers. Most of the time, to free a trapped passenger after an accident, the car is sliced and cut open with hydraulic tools--the proverbial 'Jaws of Life.' Now there's...

Truckers find hotspots invaluable as aid to life on the road: Truckers are using Wi-Fi hotspots as extensions of their truck cab as the service rapidly pops up at truck stops across the U.S. It's a natural offering for the truck stops, which already provided Internet access and data ports. For truckers who live out of their cabs, it's just another amenity that lets them stay in touch with family and friends, relax, and keep on top of their work....

The Los Angeles Times goes multimedia 03/21/2003 12:14 AM
The Los Angeles Times goes multimedia. For the past few weeks, the LA Times has begun a significant push into offering video, audio, and interactive Flash on their website. One of the most interesting aspects is that the paper has moved one step beyond simply replaying AP Television clips as many sites have done; the LA Times writers are stand before the cameras and microphones themselves and report stories in a stuttering, non-hairsprayed, introverted demeanor that I find very refreshing, though so far I have gleaned very little additional information from it. When does (or can) this mode of journalism on the web rise above gimmickry or 'just because we can' and add value to a written article? Can video/tv news rise above mere spectacle?

08/30/2004 09:56 AM

Toyota is prepping a new "Sport" version of its gasoline/electric hybrid Prius that ups the available power of the combustion engine from 77 hp to a whopping 99 hp by increasing the displacement of the engine to 1.5 liters, and bolstering the electrical system for a new total rating of 145 HP. Toyota plans to unveil the sportier Prius at the late September Paris Motor show, along with an ultra-clean Diesel concept.

Can you just imagine how fast a hybrid V8 would be? Or maybe a turbocharged V12 hybrid? Or - oh my god - a rocket-powered hybrid.

Self-parking Prius

Self-parking Prius 01/16/2004 11:35 AM
A $2,200 add-on to the new Toyota Prius hybrid car allows the car to parallel-park itself, using a sensor array.
A dashboard display shows the image taken by the camera. When you near a parking space and shift into reverse, computerized lines pop up on the display, along with arrows pointing up, down, left and right.

Using the arrows, you move the lines around until they define exactly where you want the car to be parked. Then you push the "set" button on the display.

Keep your foot lightly on the brake pedal, and the car will start backing up, the steering wheel responding to an invisible hand. Voila, the car will park itself in the spot you've chosen with the arrows.
