I spend anywhere from three to eight hours every week sweating along with a motley crew of local misfits, shelving, sorting, and hauling ton after ton of written matter in a rowhouse basement in Baltimore. We have no heat nor air conditioning, but still, every week, we come and work. Volunteer night is Wednesday, but many of us also work on the weekends, when we're open to the public. There are times when we're freezing and we have to wear coats and gloves inside, making handling books somewhat tricky; other times, we're all soaked with sweat, since it's 90 degrees out and the basement is thick with bodies. One learns to forget about personal space when working at The Book Thing, since you can scarcely breathe without bumping into someone, and we are all so accustomed to having to scrape by each other that most of us no longer bother to say "excuse me" unless some particularly dramatic brushing occurs.

I caught this story about Burgerville in the NYTimes last month and was intrigued to hear that an Oregon fast food place was doing seasonal items and using local meat and produce, just like a high falutin' restuarant. I had seen Burgervilles often since I moved to Oregon and I've ignored them all this time because they appeared to be some local-yokel chain with a generic, boring name and exterior to match.

Today I finally checked them out and I was blown away. Now, I've read Fast Food Nation, and I know pretty much everyone in the industry is panned except for In-N-Out. I enjoy In-N-Out burger whenever I'm in California, but after trying Burgerville, I have to say that if Schlosser wrote about them, there's no doubt he would have praised them more than In-N-Out.

The following is a partial list of what they have going for them. Every couple of months, whatever's in season is an item on the menu, and they buy from local producers. My strawberry shake tonight was loaded with a ridiculous amount of chunked fresh strawberries. They offer not one but two different veggie burgers on the menu. They let you add local favorite Tillamook cheese to burgers, just like I have at home. The turkey burgers are made with only cage-free birds. All the beef is Oregon-raised and fed vegetarian diets so you'll never have a mad cow problem. The fish and chips use halibut caught in the Northwest. All buns come from an area bakery. They had nutrition info right on counter, clear as day. And while waiting for my food inside one of their locations today, I noticed in a rack of information on the company there was a pamphlet explaining some healthy environment certification that the chain received because they only buy from responsible farmers and ranchers. Crazy, no?

The food was great, better than what I expect from fast food, but the company philosophy and the way they conduct their business really blew me away. It's not everyday you find a place with a drive-thru selling greasy burgers that cares about anything aside from the quick buck. I think I may have found something better than In-N-Out and I'm glad to know it's in my new home state.

After ice skating with friends in Central Park the other day, we hit the Burger Joint in Le Parker Meridien hotel for some much needed sustenance. This is one of those classic New York juxtapositions, a burgers-only greasy spoon (dinner: $8) in a midtown four-star hotel (rooms start at $300/night)...kinda like discovering an In-N-Out Burger in a Four Seasons hotel. Duck behind the curtain in the lobby and you'll find good burgers, beer (Sam Adams only), and an eclectic music mix (Bobby McFerrin, Edwin Starr's War, and some opera).

After we ate, JCN inquired at the counter how such an odd arrangement came to be. A hip bar previously occupied the space, but the bartender left and took a bunch of his clientele with him. The space lay fallow for a time while they figured out what to do with it, but renovating the space and building up a new clientele was too daunting for them. Someone had the idea of putting a burger place in there, so they put walls on the space and gave it a try. Judging by the full house in there and the terrific lines at lunchtime on weekdays, it's succeeded pretty well.

MATT GALLANT -- NovaLogic wants you PC gamers to get out of 1942 and Vietnam and plunk down $39.99 for their modern-themed multiplayer combat-fest, and is hoping mentioning typhoons in the title will... well, I don't know. This "Typhoon Rising" thing is supposed to sound vaguely martial, I guess.

Things are not looking too good for NovaLogic, though, as last week's release of a demo didn't light a fire in the online community the way that Battlefield 1942's demo did. I think gamers took one look at the game's promise of 150 player battles with 35 weapons and 29 vehicles available and thought, "Yeah, right."

Dunstan Orchard's great looking blog has had a whole bunch of upgrades, and some of them are pretty interesting. Firstly, he's taken my blockquote citations script and modified it to handle citations that aren't links in an intelligent way. He also now has a commen t spam blacklist (I really need to work out the syndication details for that and publish some code).

His most interesting new feature is comment alerts, a system that allows people to keep track of discussions that they have participated in on his blog. Dunstan's system allows users to "opt in" to allow future commenters to alert them if their comment is relevant to what the original user posted. It's well worth surfing over and checking out Dunstan's explanation of the system, which may well materialise on this site as well some time in the future. There are quite a few other neat tricks around the site, some of which are detailed in the Colophon.
