It might feel like a slow
news day when I write about a company that makes glowing spheres
coming out with a glowing box, but lo! It is not. In fact, ignoring
the fact that you are paying $180 for a fancy light, the Ambient
Weather Forecast Beacon is actually quite slick; the light inside
moves from white the red through a rainbow of different shades, each
one corresponding to the temperature in your area -- the same colors
that TV meteorologists use on the weather maps. Ambient broadcasts a
radio signal to the device so that it can work anywhere for free, or
you can upgrade for a monthly subscription to receive color notices
about stock portfolio changes, news (Flash red for Gay Marriage Vote
Results; seriously, you could do that), or even (god forbid) terrorist
threat levels.
And as an aside, if you don't want to shell out the cash for the
device, there are a variety of software-based options that will do
similar thing (Konfabulator on OSX, for instance), but you won't get
the spiffy lamp. And that's half of what makes this cool, really.

The FroggyBox is a sensor-pack in a plasitc frog with a serial
interface (a wireless USB adapter is available), containing a
thermometer, a barometer and an hygrometer -- basically everything you
need to turn a PC into a weather station, especially when you add
their forthcoming wireless plastic rooster, which contains an
anemometer, weathercock, and heliograph.

It's about as stylish as
wearing a banana on your wrist (as I am required to, by law), but the
the Weather Watch Pro from Speedtech needs a little room to stretch
out if it's going to provide all this functionality. Check windspeed,
barometric pressure (with 9 hour history), altitude, time,
temperature, windchill and more, made especially accurate by its
built-in Swiss-made impeller (well, windspeed, at least -- I doubt the
magnetized impeller helps much with altitude, for instance). For $150,
the looks can be forgiven, especially since it's most useful in
nautical settings, where even the classiest piece of hardware is
either encrusted in salt or clad in three tons of brass.

08/02/2004 12:23 PMTropical Storm Alex caused the delay of NASA’s MESSENGER Mercury
satellite today. NASA has announced that they will try again at 2:16
a.m. EDT on Tuesday. By that time NASA expects the storm to have
cleared out. It has been nearly 10 years since NASA launched a
satellite to Mercury, and I can hardly wait to see what images
MESSENGER will be sending back in the future.
NASA has waited three decades for a second look at the planet Mercury,
but now will have to wait at least one day longer as stormy weather on
Monday kept its MESSENGER Mercury satellite on the launch pad.
Tropical Storm Alex dumped torrents of rain on Cape Canaveral Air
Force Station throughout the day leading up to the scheduled lift-off,
though launch weather officers had predicted the storm would move far
enough north to allow the Boeing Co Delta 2 rocket to blast off.
But as the countdown approached lift-off, heavy anvil clouds continued
to envelop the Cape and NASA scrubbed the launch for the day. NASA
said it would try again to launch MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space
ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging) at 2:16 a.m. EDT on Tuesday.
Weather officers predicted a 70 percent chance of favorable weather.
"Tropical Storm Alex should be out of the way tomorrow and
improve the situation at least somewhat," said NASA spokesman
George Diller.

reports called METARs. The reports are updated once or twice an hour.
This release contains five new translations (for a total of 11

to the video game industry. The folks providing weather maps are
watching the technology as well. In fact, over at the BBC, they're
updating their 6 year-old weather map technology
with much
more modern computer graphics technology, that they say matches
the latest 3D graphics found in high level video games. Either way,
it clearly beats the ancient magnet based system some people may
remember. Still, at some point, you have to wonder how much marginal
benefit there is from more realistic looking rain on the TV weather
map.

Not only will this make it easier for the smaller guys to start
offering weather related services, it means that anyone with with a
few free hours and some scripting skills can build the applications
that nobody else offered. Having written the Geo::METAR perl module
ages ago (I'm so behind on patches, it's not even funny), I really get
