Happy Birthday Laughing Squid!
Happy Birthday Laughing Squid!
06/07/2004 10:05 PM
Our dear friends at
Laughing Squid, San
Francisco's clearinghouse for avant-garde art and creative madness,
are celebrating their ninth birthday this November. They couldn't wait
to celebrate though, so they're throwing the Laughing Squid 8 1/2 Year
Anniversary Show this Saturday, June 12.
The line-up of performers is truly insane, from Subgenius savant
Dr. Hal Robins to heavy metal bagpipe virtuoso The Madpiper to New
York "sound acrobat" ZeroBoy.
As Timothy Leary said, "You have to go out of your mind to use your
head." Happy birthday, Laughing Squid! Link

Webmail Access for Mozilla Thunderbird
Webmail Access for Mozilla Thunderbird
04/10/2005 11:40 PMFinally, an extension to Mozilla Thunderbird which allows access to
webmail! (One of the oft-most requested feature enhancements of the
email client. Hooray for extensibility!)
The Web-Mail extension creates a platform which other extensions use
to integrate web based email accounts into Mozilla Thunderbird. POP is
the only protocol supported, this means Thunderbird can only download
emails.
Currently supported via extensions: Hotmail (and MSN), Yahoo and
Lycos. A step-by-step setup guide is available.

OverLook Webmail 3.2 (Default branch)
04/18/2005 11:03 AM

OverLook is a Web mail client forked from the SquirrelMail project.
It attempts to change the look and feel and make it simpler to use.
Changes:
A new skin was added. A few bugs were fixed.
Tim's Webmail 1.3 (Default branch)
Tim's Webmail 1.3 (Default branch)
04/18/2005 06:36 PM

Tim's Webmail is a Web-based POP3 email viewer powered by Java
Servlets. It uses SMTP to send mail via the JavaMail API. It's fully
compatible with sendmail and QMail. It has a simple user interface,
and all basic mail functions are available. Support for multipart
messages is implemented. The user interface is customizable using the
HTML templates provided.
Changes:
Mailbox filtering and ordering is now available for accounts with less
than 500 messages. Many code improvements and bugfixes. HTML style
changes. The HTML GUI has been moved to JSP pages; servlets now only
perform non-GUI functions. Interaction with the mailbox has been
separated to a new layer, so that GUI elements do not deal directly
with mail API.

OverLook Webmail 3.1 (Default branch)
03/24/2005 12:07 PM

OverLook is a Web mail client forked from the SquirrelMail project.
It attempts to change the look and feel and make it simpler to use.
Changes:
Many changes were made, but the best change is the
reduction of the right panel HTML output by 40%
and the optimization of all the JavaScript. It now
works in Konqueror 3.4. There is only a small bug
due to the unacceptable sequence of loading of
frames in konqueror itself. There is even a
SquirrelMail address-book importer.
Dolda Webmail 0.9 (Default branch)
Dolda Webmail 0.9 (Default branch)
03/14/2005 06:18 PM

Dolda Webmail (or d-mail for short) is a Webmail
system written in PHP and interfacing with a
back-end IMAP server. Advantages over most other
projects of a similar sort are that it uses a
persistant connection to the IMAP server (which
increases performance on the Web server, reduces
load on the network and on the IMAP server, and
doesn't force the Web server to store the user's
password in-core), and that it makes full use of
XHTML 1.0 Strict and CSS 2.
Changes:
This release features some improvements to the mailbox management
page, a translation into Japanese, an updated French translation, and
the usual maintenance changes (bugfixes, etc.).

1GB of webmail from Google
1GB of webmail from Google
04/09/2004 04:08 PMProvided this story about a
new 1 GB webmail service from Google isn't a lame early April fool,
I'm really psyched about it. A decent amount of space combined with
Google's search technology could really help me keep up to date with
my email. Just off the top of my head, here's my ideal hosted webmail
feature list:
- Costs between two and ten dollars a month. This is a critical
service I'm entrusting to a company - I want the reassurance that
there's cold hard cash on the line if they screw anything up. Paying
for a no-ads option is fine too.
- Smart filtering. I'm on a bunch of different mailing lists and
can't live without filters.
- "Virtual folders" - things like "all emails from this person",
"emails sent to this person" should be on hand at all times.
- Import and export mail as mbox files. Don't lock me in!
- Decent spam filtering, obviously.
- Send plain text, receieve plain text. No HTML in either
direction.
- Kick-arse search.
I don't really have very complex needs, which is why I'm so
frustrated that so far nothing I've tried has done what I need it to.
Here's hoping Google can hit the mark.
Update: The Google press release is dated April
1st. Given their history, it's almost certainly a hoax.
Aah well, we can dream.
