OK, best Hollywood lede *evar*:

The remake of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory was thrown into chaos on Wednesday when a worker dropped a $540,000 camera lens in a vat of chocolate.

Half coated mirrors are a great
technique.....

Half coated mirrors are a great
technique.....
04/27/2004 01:13 PM

This reminds me of a project we did at Bally-Midway in 1982 called 10 Ten Deluxe.

It was a shuffleboard bowling game with had a half-way mirror displaying the bowling pins - in the proper position - but they were really 90 degrees tilted, out of view.  A half coated mirror made it appear as if the pins were right in front of you, and you'd 'bowl' with a shuffle puck.

This technique has always been the solution to a REAL BIG problem that exists for video conferewncing.

Ever been in a video conference?  Ever looked at someone eye to eye?  You can't.

'Cause the person on the other side is being videoed by a camera which is NOT the display and the human is looking at the display.  So a half coated mirror technique (sort of like the drawing below) would enable us to both look at the display and be videoed at the proper angle.

The technique in this post is a little scarier. I'm not sure if I want lasers so close to my eyes.  But a camera shooting through a half coated mirror to solve this problem - sounds fine to me.

Here's the post.......

Laser vision.

microvisionYou'll have to feel totally comfortable with beaming lasers into your eyes to want to try this out, but a company called Microvision has come out with the Nomad Expert Technician System, which uses a wireless computer and a sort of monocle to project a virtual image by beaming lasers directly into the retina.

Microvision says they're perfectly safe (they better hope so!), and the US Army is already using them in Iraq to give soldiers a microvisionheads-up display with a view of the entire battlefield. Next up, they're being tested by surgeons, who would actually be able to see inside of their patients or keep taps on vital data like heart rate and blood pressure during surgery, and Honda is trying it out with its auto mechanics, who would be able to view car diagnostic and repair information while working. Right now the quality of the images is pretty low, but you know that they'll eventually get it right and it'll be full-color, fully immersive virtual reality for everyone. Or at least everyone who can afford it right now the Nomad Expert Technician System costs four grand.

Teflon-coated yarn

Teflon-coated yarn 06/16/2004 10:20 AM
A Norweigan company has shipped a teflon-coated knitting yarn that sheds water and is intended for use in all-weather knitting projects.
I was curious to see if the fibers would even allow water, being coated with Teflon and all. They did, but not before showing a curious phenomenon: the water lodged itself in the pockets of each stitch, making hundreds of tiny diamond-like bubbles all over the fabric surface.

Half-male, half-female, all crab

Half-male, half-female, all crab 06/17/2005 03:35 PM
David Pescovitz: Fishermen caught a crab in the lower Chesapeake Bay that's literally half male, half female. Among other differences, male blue crabs have deep blue claws while females' claw tips look like they were painted with red nail polish. The fishermen noticed that this particular crab had one of each. Researchers at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science say that the condition, known as bilateral gynandromorphism, is caused by a "chromosomal mishap." Studying the rare animal could increase understanding of crab sexual development and breeding behavior. From the Washington Post:
 Wp-Dyn Content Photo 2005 06 16
Ph2005061600466
Before turning over the crab to the scientists, (boat captain David) Johnson and other watermen conducted their own experiment into its sex life, with bewildering results. They dropped a female crab, which was just about ready to mate, into its tank.

First, the half-and-half crab cradled the female under his legs, as a male crab would do in preparation for mating.

Then, the crab seemed to lose interest in the female and let her go, Johnson said.

Then a day later . . .

"He ate half of her," Johnson said.

I'm really happy with how it came out, but wanted to give out one tiny bit of errata for the record: the article identifies me as a co-founder of boingboing.net -- although I'm a proud co-editor of BB, the founding was done by my pal Mark Frauenfelder and his wife Carla Sinclair. Charlie Stross, posthuman: April Fools'

Charlie Stross, posthuman: April Fools'
from Paul Di Filippo
04/03/2005 01:24 PM
Cory Doctorow: Paul Di Filippo wrote a great April Fools' article for Locus on my pal and collaborator Charlie Stross becoming posthuman:
"Charlie was teetering on the precipice of transhumanism for the whole last year," said his friend and collaborator Cory Doctorow. "His lifestyle and cerebral/neurological capabilities had been ramped up through intensive ideation and selective smart-drug use to an exquisite pitch just short of the Singularity. When he laid his hands on that sweet, sweet hunk of hardware, it provided the critical mass of complexification necessary to tip him over fully into the Extropian ideal condition."

The resulting state-change brought total en-bobblement to an area of several cubic miles surrounding the store where Stross made his climactic purchase. It is presumed that the newly born ineffable deity once known as Stross is localized within the stasis-sphere, but authorities differ over containment theories.
