Rights Management Services (RMS), information protection technology
for Windows Server (TM) 2003 that helps enterprises and organizations
safeguard their sensitive digital information from unauthorized use.
RMS allows information workers to distribute information within their
organizations and define how and under what circumstances it can be
used, such as when it expires and who can open, modify, print and
forward it. The ability to express and enforce document-level
protection will allow organizations to internally share information
more broadly, with less risk of inadvertent or intentional misuse.

Digital rights management ( DRM
) reached a milestone this week, with the promulgation of a major
standard, but not without a problem. DRM technologies allow users to
shape access to digital documents by building in usage restrictions,
resembling copy protection for videotapes. Ideally, a user may set
who can view a document, or who can edit it, and for how long.
The International Organization for Standardization ( ISO ) anounced its
support for
MPEG Rights Expression Language , or MPEG-REL. Many digital
content and media giants have been involved in seeing this to
fruition.
However, another DRM standard is already gaining ground. Open Digital Rights
Language ( ODRL ) has been out
since late 2002, and has won some business and academic support .
Due to the perceived widespread demand for DRM, both standards are
potentially in a competitive relationship .
