Network
06/17/2005 04:45 PMGridlogix, Inc., a leading creator of enabling interoperable XML Web
Services technology today announced enhanced support for Dust
Networks’ SmartMesh™ wireless sensor network. SmartMesh is a wireless
mesh sensor network used in remote monitoring and control. The
Gridlogix EnNET® XML Web Service application extends the functionality
of the SmartMesh system to include robust protocol translation between
the wireless mesh network and other automation protocols and systems.
EnNET translates the SmartMesh wireless protocol into BACnet/IP, SNMP,
and LonWorks® allowing Dust Networks’ wireless sensor network to be
seamlessly integrated with existing automation networks. [PRWEB Jun

03/14/2005 05:46 PM Four options are affordable for enterprise-grade security inside a
small office: This article, which I wrote for Mobile Pipeline,
addresses the four servers and services that have a price and focus
square on the small business of 5 to 100 users. Above that range, and
you really better have an IT department and integrate your directory
services. But for a few dollars per user period (in house) or per
month (hosted), a small business can have a level of Wi-Fi link
security that approaches that of a large enterprise....
Small World Networks Key To Memory
Small World Networks Key To Memory
05/28/2004 05:09 AMSmall World Networks Key To Memory by Philip Cohenhttp://
www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99995012"If
you recall this sentence a few seconds from now, you can thank a
simple network of neurons for the experience. That is the conclusions
of researchers who have built a computer model that can reproduce an
important aspect of short-term memory. The key, they say, is that the
neurons form a 'small world' network. Small-world networks are
surprisingly common. Human social networks, for example, famously
connect any two people on Earth - or any actor to Kevin Bacon - in six
steps or less. ... 'The philosophical conclusion is that connectivity
matters,' says [Northwestern University] team member Sara Solla. 'Our
model uses only a simple caricature of neurons, yet this network shows
this working memory-like behaviour.' ... They found that when 10 to 20
per cent of the neurons participated in short cuts, the network formed
self-sustaining loops of activity."

09/24/2004 05:41 AMAsynchronous Discussion Groups As Small World and Scale Free
Networks by Gilad Ravid and Sheizaf Rafaelihttp://firstmonda
y.org/issues/issue9_9/ravid/AbstractWhat is the network form of online
discussion groups? What are the topological parameters delineating the
interaction on such groups? We report an empirical examination of the
form of online discussion groups. We are interested in examining
whether such groups conform to the Small World and the Scale Free
models of networks. Support for these expectations provides a formal
expression of growth, survival potential and preferential attachment
in the connection patterns in discussion groups. The research
questions were tested with a sample of over 8,000 active participants,
and over 30,000 messages. We find that the social network resulting
from discussion groups is indeed a Scale Free Network, based on In,
Out and All Degree distributions. We also find that, for the same
sample, discussion groups are a Small World Network too. As expected,
the clustering coefficients for these groups differ significantly from
random networks, while their characteristic path lengths are similar
to random networks. Implications of the topology for the design and
understanding of discussion groups include the stability and control
of such groups, as well as their longevity.

08/17/2004 01:25 PMMy latest TheFeature article is about ways to make tiny batteries last
for years.
At Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., researchers are
trying to make a nuclear-powered battery with a very long life span.
They've built prototype batteries that use a speck of nickel-63 (a
radioactive isotope) to vibrate a tiny cantilever. The cantilever
could be made from a piece of piezoelectric material, which could
supply power to the sensor. Nickel-63 has a half-life of around 100
years, so it could provide power for several decades. Nukes make
people nervous, but there's not enough radioactive material in the
prototype to cause a mini-meltdown -- it's comparable to the amount
found in a smoke detector. Still, researchers acknowledge that they
have a perception problem to overcome.

Three Municipal Wireless Networks

Three Municipal Wireless Networks
Foreshadow Future
06/24/2004 06:11 PMBob Brewin dives into three cities that are deploying large-area Wi-Fi
networks for public-safety-only and mixed-use purposes: Spokane has
unwired 100 city blocks, Rio Rancho claims over a 100 square miles,
and Cook County ultimately expects nearly 1,000 square miles of
coverage for public safety in Chicago and surrounding areas. The
movement shows that municipal Wi-Fi has moved from a curiosity
explored without many concrete goals--let's bring more people into
downtown and see what happens, for instance--into a critical part in
managing emergency response for fire, police, and medical personnel.
When major incidents hit, the critical question is how well these
networks perform, especially compared to cellular, landline, and
proprietary (and expensive) public-safety band equipment. Spokane and
Rio Rancho will offer public access to the network, while Cook County
is focusing purely on public safety. Cook County's routers can switch
to cellular or satellite networks as needed....
