Sony tranSticks: Wireless Cables
Sony tranSticks: Wireless Cables
07/14/2004 09:59 AM
Research-types at Sony's Computer Science
Laboratories have developed a concept called 'transSticks,' virtually
connected Memory Sticks that act as simple networking cables between
any two devices that support the standard. Although there are
certainly bugs to work out, I'm sure (like security, although they
seem to be keeping that in mind), being able to throw away networking
cables completely would be great -- even if it necessitated every
device having a Memory Stick slot. When someone develops a pairing
standard that works like this between different card types, that will
be more impressive.
Or wait, what if the wireless radios were inside the devices
themselves and operated over a standard protocol, like 802.11b? I
suppose that's just crazy talk. (I feel the need to disclaim my
hateration -- this is actually pretty cool.)

Griffin offers new FireWire, audio
cables
07/23/2004 08:06 AMGriffin Technology Inc. has released two new FireWire 400 cables and a
new audio cable designed to fix noise problems, all part of its
ClearChoice
line. The new FireWire cables include a 6-foot long extension
cable and a 6-foot connection cable; each are available for US$14.99.
The audio cable is called the Ground Loop Isolator Cable. It's
designed to negate the low-frequency audible hum sometimes heard when
two pieces of audio equipment are connected together but plugged into
separate outlets. It costs $19.99.
Zip-Linq cables: device charging without
bricks
Zip-Linq cables: device charging without
bricks
12/22/2003 10:11 AM
It used to be that I shlepped a power-strip (sometimes two!) with me
when I went on the road, because they haven't built the hotel-room yet
that has enough plugs to charge my entire device array, not least
because everything that fits in my pocket comes with a charger whose
transformer brick eats two or three outlets.
Then I discovered USB and FireWire charging -- and more specifically,
Zip-Linq retractable cables. Instead of plugging everything into the
wall, you attach your device to a little bon-bon-sized retractable
wire that goes into one of your computer's ports and plug your
computer into the wall. This is especially handy if you're travelling
overseas, since it's just not practical to buy enough Euro-220
adapters to get your devices to talk to the local alternating current.
Your laptop probably has an international power-supply requiring only
a plug adapter, and once that's attached to the wall, you've got
know-quantity/know-interface power for all your gizmos.
Before I leave on my next trip overseas tomorrow, I will slip into my
pocket a Firewire cable (for my little backup harddrive, which I yanked
out of an old PowerBook and put into a tiny enclosure, so that I can
back up every day on the road), a cellphone charger (one for my US Motorola iDen phone, one for my European
Nokia phone -- and cables are available for most
manufacturers:
Motorola,
Sony-Ericsson,
Samsung,
Kyocera,
Sanyo)
and a PDA charger (Palm,
iPaq).
Rael crashed on my sofa this weekend
and pointed out that Zip-Linq is now shipping a wall-adapter, so that if your laptop is unavailable, you can
plug this into the socket and still charge up.
The best part is that at $10-20 these wires are actually
cheaper than the manufacturers' chargers for the most part.

Monitor shopping, especially used monitor shopping from a tiny shop in
New Jersey that takes four hours round trip... well, it sucks,
especially when the monitors are crap. If you needed a surprise
ending, I'm sorry, I can't provide one. What I can provide is
this new Keyspan USB-to-Parallel cable, the sort of peripheral that,
despite being handy, gets increasingly geekier by the minute. Still,
for the occasional "transferring data to an ancient PC" maneuver, it's
nice to know someone makes a cable. Next up: SD cards that fit in
5.25-inch floppy drives.
