File alteration monitoring techniques

05/14/2004 05:01 AMMost modern operating systems provide file monitoring facilities to
give applications real-time information about changes to the
filesystem. A variety of notification methods are used to tell the
application when a change happens, ranging from an asynchronous signal
being sent from the kernel through a user space tool printing the name
of the changed file on its standard output. We'll take a look at some
of the file monitoring facilities available to the Linux developer,
starting with the lowest-level mechanism and working up to the
highest.

IEEE networking conferences turn to

IEEE networking conferences turn to
Linux as network OS
12/11/2003 07:17 AM At first glance this might look like a "press release turned into a
story" article since it started with an announcement by I.D.E.A.L.
Technology of Orlando, Florida. But how and why I.D.E.A.L. vice
presidents Anthony Awtrey and Jordan Jacobs brought in a contract to
provide wireless (and wired) networking services to the IEEE Project
802 Standards Committee and Wireless Working Groups should serve as a
lesson to Linux solution providers all over the world, especially in
light of the fact that IEEE -- the Institute of Electrical and
Electronic Engineers -- was getting free Microsoft-based wireless (and
wired) networking products, but decided it was better to pay for
Linux-based networking because it worked better.
