Due Process, or No Process: Rule of Law
at Stake
04/20/2004 09:57 AM
Our government insists that it can kidnap a foreign national overseas and hold him forever in a Guantanamo jail, or put him through a military trial and even execute him. Oh, the government has made a few cosmetic concessions to law in its plans for military tribunals. But note that these are unilateral changes and can be withdrawn at any time. Our government also insists that U.S. citizens can be declared enemy combatants and tossed into jail forever, or tried by military tribunals (and maybe executed), without access to a lawyer or the courts. If the court endorses this, it's endorsing despotism.

The Mob Muscles In On Spyware And

The Mob Muscles In On Spyware And
Spamming
12/09/2003 03:40 PM
It's the natural next step, apparently. People have been saying for a while now that organiz ed crime has discovered the wonders of spam and spyware and are actively recruiting techies to help them do so. However, once organized crime gets into an illegal market, the next thing they want to do is corner it for themselves. Thus, independent producers of spyware and spam are likely to get a knock on the door from their (not so) friendly internet neighborhood mobster asking for a cut of the action. While it would be nice to have some infighting in the spamming/spyware world to let them bother each other for a while, the end result is likely to be a very well organized scamming group that will be very difficult to take down.

The Power of Artificial Muscles

The Power of Artificial Muscles 03/08/2004 11:27 PM
For years, researchers have been tinkering with electroactive polymers, a type of artificial muscle. But the work finally appears to be paying off with some useful products. By Steve Nadis from Wired magazine.

Plastic Muscles Get Stronger

Plastic Muscles Get Stronger 03/08/2004 11:16 PM
Wired has an article talking about how electroactive polymers (EAPs) have gotten stronger and longer lasting. EAPs have gotten strong enough to have a practical self contained robot (NiTi never has gotten this strong). These muscles rival motors in that they're very quiet and very strong and now long lasting enough to use as fans in computers. EAPs can expand to 5 times their size, a feat unproducible by piezoelectric materials. Of course these new EAPs have the Navy's attention. Look for plastic muscles in your robot's future!?

New Automation Opportunities in .NET

New Automation Opportunities in .NET 02/11/2004 09:45 AM
Almost unknown thanks to the buzz surrounding WebServices, Windows Services present a powerful new opportunity for RAD developers in the .NET world. The ability to build and deploy a Windows Service using the .NET framework provides developers the opportunity to significantly enhance automation efforts in their enterprise. Understanding the right architecture and development practices can make the difference between a successful service and a resource hog. In this article Cos Callis describes the considerations that you need to account for in your design and provides you with a template for an efficient "watcher" style service.
