verizon_treo_page.jpg imageVerizon leaps headfirst into 2003 with the addition of the PalmOne Treo 600 Smartphone, the hit all-in-one mobile wonder that most of our first-adopter customers already jumped ship to go use. With an updated version of the Treo just around the corner, be literally one of the last people on your block to take advantage of this aging platform, experiencing the rich feature set and fun capabilities that everyone else has been experiencing for the last year.

Verizon Gets PalmOne Treo 600 07/08/2004 07:20 AM

treo_verizon.jpg imageVerizon Wireless is finally getting the PalmOne Treo 600, according to SlashPhone, in both 'with camera' and cameraless versions. Although the specific launch date hasn't been announced yet (it should be within the next few days), the stated plan is to launch the Treo along with the re-launch of their Wireless Sync service. National Retail Price will be $450 with a two-year service contract, or $500 with a one-year. So this probably means the Treo Ace is about to launch on Sprint or T-Mobile, right?

IPTV Saga: Verizon Sticks With Good Ol'
Lobbying, Adds Cash Incentive
06/17/2005 03:33 PM
SBC may have stopped negotiating with lawmakers on IPTV requirements, but Verizon is still working the legislative angle. The issue surrounds current (and probably outdated) laws that would force the telcos to obtain franc hisee licenses with every municipality it wants to offer video services. The telcos have been trying hard to change those laws, without much luck. So last week, SBC gave up on negotiating and brashly said it was going to offer IPTV anyway. Their attitude: if someone wants to sue us, go ahead. Meanwhile, Verizon has come up with a new plan for gaining statewide (rather than local level) approval for their video service. Om Malik notes a WSJ story that says Verizon is offering New Jersey a deal in which it will ki ck back to the state 3% of TV revenues, up from 2%. Verizon and SBC have tried the statewide approach already in Texas, where the telcos' proposal went down in flames. But this time around with NJ, it appears that Verizon is sweetening the pot a bit. Hmm. Give us approval and we'll pay you more? That certainly sounds like a bribe. Or maybe it's just business as usual.

Treo 600

Treo 600 08/07/2004 01:57 PM
I finally took the plunge and bought a Treo 600. I'd been using AT&T for many years as my mobile phone service provider, despite the fact the reception in my house has always been less than marginal. I discovered that friends with Verizon service in S.F. actually had great reception...

My New Treo 600 03/08/2004 11:18 PM
Well, it was a close call between the PalmOne Treo 600 and the Sony Ericsson P900, but I've gone with the Treo. The P900 has a much better Web browser, a better camera, better multitasking and in many ways a better user interface. But the Treo has a thumb-keyboard, which for me is essential, and zillions of Palm OS applications that run nicely and enhance the device.

RealPlayer Comes to the Treo 600?

RealPlayer Comes to the Treo 600? 01/08/2004 07:20 PM

There were lots of big announcements today but as far as I'm concerned, the biggest is Real's new software plus music store. Not for the music store itself, because after I download the first song for $.10 I don't envision locking my music up in AAC + Helix encrypted files, but because RealPlayer 10 brings with it a new Palm component. The line that specifically caught my eye is "support for over 50 portable music devices, including the iPOD and the Handspring Treo 600."

Naturally my fingers tripped over themselves to get to the Real site and download the software to my T600, but I couldn't find a download link for it anywhere. The key turns out to be this little phrase: "For the next 10 days, U.S. consumers who download RealPlayer 10 will be able to purchase their first track for only $0.10. Consumers can transfer tracks purchased in the RealPlayer Music Store to the Creative Zen Xtra as well as seven models of PalmOne devices, including most of the Tungsten models, the Zire 71, and the Treo 600."

I didn't realize I had to actually download the main player and create an account at the music store just to get the Palm piece that I want, but of course Real is going to make this as difficult as possible (I don't use Real anymore because it's become more and more annoying with each iteration). PDA 24/7 spelled it out in the following post:

"Email from Galley- 'As I write this, I am listening to Night Ranger's 'Don't Tell Me You Love Me' on my Zire 71. It is a 192Kbps DRM-enabled AAC file! RealPlayer 10 was released today, and it features a music store. Tracks are 99 cents, or $9.95 per album. All files are RealAudio 10 (192Kbps AAC), so the sound quality is very good. Persons who have signed up for a Music Store account can get version 1.5 of RealPlayer for PalmOS.' "

So despite my dislike for the software, I've been anxiously awaiting a new version of RealPlayer that would work with the T600 because I really, really, really want to be able to access Live365 streams. Even better, I'd like to finally be able to access Rhapsody on it, and I'm guessing this is the first step to making that a reality.

By the time I realized what I needed to do, I was home reading my aggregator for the night. Every day I carry my sync cable to work and back in order to keep my data and programs up-to-date at both home and work (yes, I need to buy a second charger/sync cable, but they all seem to be sold out). Naturally, I forgot my sync cable at work tonight, so I can't test this and install the Palm program. Argh - my kingdom for a sync cable!!

So until I have a chance to go through all of this myself, has anyone else installed the new RealPlayer 10 on a Treo 600? Can you do more than just listen to purchased Real music files in it? Can you hear live streams from other web sites? Enquiring minds want to know!

Treo woes

Treo woes 04/09/2004 04:03 PM
My beloved Treo 600 is suddenly on the fritz.  It makes and receives calls, but whenever I turn it off and on, it locks in the keyguard mode.  Shutting off keyguard didn't help, nor did soft and hard resets.  This is something serious.  Time to call the equipment replacement program, which fortunately I signed up for.

Unlocking Verizon V265 phones

Unlocking Verizon V265 phones 02/05/2005 10:00 PM
Ben Wilson: Now, here's the rub... (There is always a rub). Verizon had locked down these phones so damned tight! You couldn't get your photos off of your phone unless you paid Verizon $0.25 to send them via email from your phone. And if you wanted to transfer a background image to your phone, you had to go the same route. You can't upload games or ringtones or any of the things that you might expect a futurephone such as this would allow. Verizon has that locked down and would like to sucker you at $0.25 a pop. Me, being the meddling user/client/customer that I am did a little research ...
