Thanks Tom Ransom

Thanks Tom Ransom 03/06/2004 01:56 AM

Last week I mentioned that I wanted to acquire an older Mac for some testing. Tom Ransom from One Big Idea emailed to say that he has a clone PowerPC 604 that he wasn’t using. And the price was right. I’m paying $10 for shipping and Tom’s giving me the Mac. He’s even throwing in some accessories like a USB card. Tom’s my hero.

Hopefully with that USB card I’ll be able to add the Mac to my KVM switch (or maybe upgrade to a 4 port USB KVM) and not clutter my desk with another keyboard and monitor.

A press release is out this morning (and is reprinted at the bottom of this article) that says Ransom Love is joining Progeny's board of directors. Progeny founder -- now Board Chairman and Chief Strategist -- Ian Murdock says they went after Ransom, not the other way around. "We asked him," Ian adds with a small laugh, "but he was more than willing." And why wouldn't he be? Progeny is not only profitable today but has been profitable for the last two years and is reinvesting its profits in the company. It is now up to 25 employees and is looking at further growth in the future.

You can enter any text you like, and using the Yahoo API and its image search capabilities the text will be recreated using random image search results. It's very cool." Link (Thanks, Wil!)

Tow Truck Drivers Push Cars into
Tow-Away Zone then hold cars for ransom

Tow Truck Drivers Push Cars into
Tow-Away Zone then hold cars for ransom
03/22/2005 04:59 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: Tian says: "On March 7th, I took photos of a tow truck driver that damages a vehicle then tries to get away in Phoenix.

Sunday night (March 20th), Phoenix news channel 15 used a bait car and discovered that local tow truck company(s) would actually push cars into tow-away zone first, then held the cars as "hostages" for ransom."

I just watched it. The TV crew set up a white SUV as a bait car, and parked it legally. Time and time again, tow trucks would push the car into a red zone, snap a photo, and tow it away. Of course, when the TV crew showed the owner of the tow truck company how his drivers had pushed the car into the red lane, the owner denied responsibility. "I didn't push it," he said.

Arizona lawmakers have been half-heartedly writing legislation to stop this (isn't it illegal to do this already) but the tow truck has so far been able to convince them not to ruin the good thing they've got going. Link to RealMedia file. The segment starts about 20:15 into the broadcast.

How Bad Is Paid Search?

How Bad Is Paid Search? 11/18/2003 11:30 AM
For well over a year folks at the FTC have been "concer ned" about the rise of "paid search" results, where results that are paid for are included without any indication to he end-user that these are sponsored results. Search Engine Guide takes a look at a few different search engines and de monstrates just how deceptive this is - as plenty of search engines are almost entirely made up of paid for results without indicating the monetary relationship. Of course, if the paid search results are that bad, you would think people would go elsewhere - and, there's plenty of evidence to suggest they do. Studies show that the majority of folks still use Google - who is very clear on separating paid results from straight search results.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. A company named AdNoodle is letting you waive your rights under the Do Not Call list in exchange for cold hard cash. You decide how much it's worth to you - 50 cents, $1, $2 per minute - to have a friendly chat with your local telemarketing concern and answer a "listening comprehension" quiz afterwards. What's your conventional wisdom on this one: Are we bargaining ourselves into a win-win situation? Or are we becoming low-priced callgirls for the bottom-feeders of corporate America? We report, you decide. (via Fark< /a>)

Four years later the company was so battered that in February it became a meal for Cingular, a competitor that didn't even exist back then.

So I'm sitting here on a wet Sunday morning and watching a video by Justin Hall. He's gone back to school - and is having a great time in LaLa.

Excerpt from a Justin poem.....

I pause during my second ginger ale and sit on a couch and wait for my date: soon after i'm surrounded by red velvet ropes and told i'll be asked to leave when the reserved party arrives

people too cool to be friendly?
a race to defrost through chemistry to reach for warmth
only out of reach from fear
a massive economy build on the fear of rejection
shaping of self for others who are all busy morphing themselves

what is sincere - the hunger

these are mostly willing, witting participants in identity drama for fun and profit
and maybe its their blustering confidence, their embrace of insincerity that is so defying
what do they know?
how did they choose?
what was their opening move?

this kind of analysis ignores the individuals involved

Here's a video (hlr bday mov) Justin did on Howard Rhiengold...

The Dot Com Freebie That Paid Off... For
The Few Who Remembered

The Dot Com Freebie That Paid Off... For
The Few Who Remembered
06/02/2004 10:10 AM
In 1998 you couldn't open a browser window without finding some sort of ridiculous "free" dot com promotion - and one of the most ridiculous was a company named TravelZoo that picked up on the fact that everyone was drooling over stock options in companies, and decided to offer "free stock" in the company to anyone who signed up to use their service. It got them a ton of hype, and for about everyone was talking about them. Then, most people forgot about them - even many who signed up to get that free stock. It turns out that maybe they should have paid more attention. That free TravelZoo stock is now actually worth something - but it's too late to redeem your shares if you didn't already re-register the stock when the company moved their shares to the Nasdaq (something most people didn't do). Of course, you have to wonder why the company only seems to be so vocal about this after the date is now passed.

Defending Paid Inclusion 03/06/2004 02:09 AM
In Yahoo Harms Trust in Search Engine, Dan Gillmor references a WSJ.com article that I cannot read (because I don't want their lame "free" registration) and claims that allowing companies to pay to make sure they're included in Yahoo! Search "makes it impossible for users to know whether companies are paying to be included in the results." Dan, it's called "paid inclusion" and it's been around for quite a while. Get paid to stop using Linux?

Get paid to stop using Linux? 11/10/2003 10:58 PM
The offer isn't from Microsoft, as you'd expect, but from our good friends at SCO. We didn't make this up. NewsForge obviously enjoys a good joke as much as anyone, but this is beyond anything our feeble imaginations could have cooked up, and the worst part is, we don't think it's meant to be a joke. It's a real story at a respected news site, not marked as "humor" or any such, under the non-funny headline, Linux Migration Incentives Planned by SCO.

Another Example Of Paid Content Not
Working
12/02/2003 10:21 PM
We've said plenty of times before that newspapers hoping to charge subscription fees to access their content online are going to have difficulty doing so - especially when there's nothing particularly unique about the content compared to the thousands of other (free) news sites out there. Now, Digital Deliverance points out that a couple of newspapers that went with a paid model for their online content are trying to scale it back and put up more content for free. Even more interesting, though is the story behind Ireland.com, the website of the Irish Times, which switched to paid access last year. A tiny percentage of their users signed up to pay a yearly subscription fee, but their page views dropped drastically, killing any hope for any serious ad revenue. More importantly, though, they absolutely decimated their audience. When you've done enough to find an audience, a good marketer figures out how to leverage that audience to make money - not to scare them all away by suddenly instituting a fee and hoping you catch a few suckers. There are things you can charge for online, but generally they're services that engage people - not general news content. Leveraging content to bring people back to sign up for a service makes sense. Locking up all that content does not.
