Thanks Tom Ransom
Thanks Tom Ransom
03/06/2004 01:56 AMLast week I mentioned that I wanted to acquire an older Mac for
some testing. Tom Ransom from One
Big Idea emailed to say that he has a clone PowerPC 604 that he
wasn’t using. And the price was right. I’m paying $10 for
shipping and Tom’s giving me the Mac. He’s even throwing
in some accessories like a USB card.
Tom’s my hero.
Hopefully with that USB card I’ll
be able to add the Mac to my KVM switch (or
maybe upgrade to a 4 port USB KVM) and not
clutter my desk with another keyboard and monitor.

11/11/2003 04:41 AMA press release is out this morning (and is reprinted at the bottom of
this article) that says Ransom Love is joining Progeny's board of
directors. Progeny founder -- now Board Chairman and Chief Strategist
-- Ian Murdock says they went after Ransom, not the other way around.
"We asked him," Ian adds with a small laugh, "but he was more than
willing." And why wouldn't he be? Progeny is not only profitable today
but has been profitable for the last two years and is reinvesting its
profits in the company. It is now up to 25 employees and is looking at
further growth in the future.

Tow Truck Drivers Push Cars into
Tow-Away Zone then hold cars for ransom
03/22/2005 04:59 PMMark Frauenfelder:
Tian says: "On March 7th, I took
photos of a tow truck driver that damages a vehicle then tries
to get away in Phoenix.
Sunday night (March 20th), Phoenix news channel 15 used a bait car
and discovered that local tow truck company(s) would actually push
cars into tow-away zone first, then held the cars as "hostages" for
ransom."
I just watched it. The TV crew set up a white SUV as a bait car,
and parked it legally. Time and time again, tow trucks would push the
car into a red zone, snap a photo, and tow it away. Of course, when
the TV crew showed the owner of the tow truck company how his drivers
had pushed the car into the red lane, the owner denied responsibility.
"I didn't push it," he said.
Arizona lawmakers have been half-heartedly writing legislation to
stop this (isn't it illegal to do this already) but the tow truck has
so far been able to convince them not to ruin the good thing they've
got going.

How Bad Is Paid Search?
How Bad Is Paid Search?
11/18/2003 11:30 AMFor well over a year folks at the FTC have been
"concer
ned" about the rise of "paid search" results, where results that
are paid for are included without any indication to he end-user that
these are sponsored results. Search Engine Guide takes a look at a
few different search engines and
de
monstrates just how deceptive this is - as plenty of search
engines are almost entirely made up of paid for results without
indicating the monetary relationship. Of course, if the paid search
results are that bad, you would think people would go elsewhere - and,
there's plenty of evidence to suggest they do. Studies show that the
majority of folks still use Google - who is very clear on separating
paid results from straight search results.

The Dot Com Freebie That Paid Off... For
The Few Who Remembered
06/02/2004 10:10 AMIn 1998 you couldn't open a browser window without finding some sort
of ridiculous "free" dot com promotion - and one of the most
ridiculous was a company named TravelZoo that picked up on the fact
that everyone was drooling over stock options in companies, and
decided to offer "free stock" in the company to anyone who signed up
to use their service. It got them a ton of hype, and for about
everyone was talking about them. Then, most people forgot about them
- even many who signed up to get that free stock. It turns out that
maybe they should have paid more attention. That free TravelZoo stock
is
now
actually worth something - but it's too late to redeem your shares
if you didn't already re-register the stock when the company moved
their shares to the Nasdaq (something most people didn't do). Of
course, you have to wonder why the company only seems to be so vocal
about this
after the date is now passed.

WSJ.com article that I cannot read (because I don't want their lame

11/10/2003 10:58 PMThe offer isn't from Microsoft, as you'd expect, but from our good
friends at SCO. We didn't make this up. NewsForge obviously enjoys a
good joke as much as anyone, but this is beyond anything our feeble
imaginations could have cooked up, and the worst part is, we don't
think it's meant to be a joke. It's a real story at a respected news
site, not marked as "humor" or any such, under the non-funny headline,

Another Example Of Paid Content Not
Working
Another Example Of Paid Content Not
Working
12/02/2003 10:21 PMWe've said plenty of times before that newspapers hoping to charge
subscription fees to access their content online are going to have
difficulty doing so - especially when there's nothing particularly
unique about the content compared to the thousands of other (free)
news sites out there. Now, Digital Deliverance points out that a
couple of newspapers that went with a paid model for their online
content are trying to scale it back and
put
up more content for free. Even more interesting, though is the
story behind Ireland.com, the website of the Irish Times, which
switched to paid access last year. A tiny percentage of their users
signed up to pay a yearly subscription fee, but their page views
dropped drastically, killing any hope for any serious ad revenue.
More importantly, though, they absolutely decimated their audience.
When you've done enough to find an audience, a good marketer figures
out how to
leverage that audience to make money - not to scare
them all away by suddenly instituting a fee and hoping you catch a few
suckers. There are things you can charge for online, but generally
they're
services that engage people - not general news content.
Leveraging content to bring people back to sign up for a service
makes sense. Locking up all that content does not.
