2gb_memorystick.jpg imageSony is finally getting around to releasing their 2GB Memory Stick Pro Duo (High-Speed) cards. They announced these things back in September of 2004, and have kicked the release date back twice. The "(High-Speed)" in the name indicates the cards have a transfer rate of 80Mbps (10MB/sec), which is far more than you'll ever need for anything practical. Sony really needs to do something about this Memory Stick naming scheme, because it's getting to be like Street Fighter games. I needn't remind you this stick is PSP compatible.

KURO_SHOT.jpg imageHere's my first thought upon seeing the KURO-SHOT flash memory drive with a VGA camera (besides that I want an orange creamsicle). When is Philips going to update the KEY019? I can't tell you how many people have flipped out when I recommended it to them, then backed off when they discovered it only has 128MB of memory built-in (although this KURO-SHOT has even less, at 64MB). I want to see the KEY020 that's half the size with 1GB of memory built-in.

But the factors leading to its first quarterly profit in two years have more to do with better management of AMD's existing businesses than with the new processors, analysts said Wednesday.

Sony Hi-MD Memory Card Reader

Sony Hi-MD Memory Card Reader 08/10/2004 09:26 PM

himd_memory imageSony makes an interesting attempt at pushing their new Hi-MD format (for "High Capacity MiniDisc"), which for those of you that don't know, has a 1 gigabyte capacity. It's called the "MCMD-R1," and for good reason. What reason that is, I do not know. The aptly named device, or whatever, attaches to a Hi-MD recorder via a USB cable. Pushing the "copy" button, images will be copied from a memory card to the Hi-MD disc. An interesting idea, but I personally find the numerous drawbacks to be...drawbacky. First of all, it apparently only does images. You can't connect even it to a PC's USB port - this makes the sub $80 device quite expensive. Also, the reader does support nearly every media under the sun, but it can only read from one card at a time.

If I were Sony, I'd instead make this into a CD drive. You could press the button, and it would copy the disc's contents onto a Hi-MD. But this is on the very fringes of legality as we know it. Oh well.

Microsoft CFO reduces costs

Microsoft CFO reduces costs 04/29/2004 09:17 AM
Microsoft Corp. Chief Financial Officer John Connors is scaling back employee business trips as part of a 13-point plan to slice costs. "We've just got to hunker down," Connors said in a March interview at his office in Redmond, Wash. Connors said he's telling workers to eliminate one in five trips, forcing them to cancel meetings or hold teleconferences. Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer, 48, and Connors, 45, have stepped up efforts to reduce expenses so Microsoft can boost profit as sales growth slows. Sales grew 17 percent to $9.18 billion in the third quarter ended March 31, and profit declined because of legal costs, the company said Wednesday in a statement distributed by PR Newswire. Revenue beat the $8.66 billion average estimate of 28 investors polled by Thomson Financial.

Intel reduces transistor size by 30%

Intel reduces transistor size by 30% 08/30/2004 02:07 PM
Intel have announced a new technology allowing them to reduce the size of their transistors by up to 30%. Industry analysts had been forecasting a major technological barrier for Intel in the not too distant future, but Intel's announcement appears to smash straight through it.

Intel have apparently made "a fully functional 70 megabit memory chip with transistor switches measuring just 35 nanometers" - a 30% size reduction on existing devices. To put this into context, Intel's line of desktop chips, like Pentium 4, are on a 90 to 180 nanometer base.

Reducing the size allows Intel to fit more transistors onto chips, allowing them to build A) more powerful chips (CPUs) B) bigger memory chips. The process could also allow Intel to take back the 'upper hand' in the chip industry from AMD, who have enjoyed great successes in recent months with their new line of chips.

The announcement could also keep "Moore’s Law" valid for many more years to come. The law, created by Intel founder Gordon Moore in the 60s, predicted that the number of transistors on chips would double every two years.

sony_inch.jpg imageDespite the ever-present push towards "smaller," there's nothing small about Sony's new "DCR-DVD301" DVD Handycam's screen. At first glance, it appears to be a standard DVD Handycam - same 1.4GB 8cm DVD writing, and more or less the same specifications - but when you look twice, you realize this new unit is equipped with a 3.5" LCD. Indeed, Sony has added a full inch in at least one area, which is more than anyone can ask, really.

"With great LCD screens comes great price," my uncle once said, and apparently he was right on target: you'll pay nearly $1,100 for this camera, presuming it gets released in America for a similar price as the Japanese market.

sony_pc350.jpg imageSony's new DCR-PC350 MiniDV Handycam jams a 3.31-megapixel CCD into a compact shell that weighs less than a pound. Each unit comes with a Handycam Station, a charging dock that connects to a TV or PC via S-Video, USB, or FireWire (i.LINK), to copy over data or display images or video straight from the camera. A 2.5-inch touchscreen LCD augments the rest of the controls, and a Memory Stick PRO Duo slot allows for a quick toss-in of additional storage (just for photos, not video, I would think). Small, light, and high-quality -- no complaints here (although I wouldn't mind a hard drive inside, too, if I'm free to wish).

Should be available in September for $1,300, "just in time for the holidays." I had no idea Sony was so concerned about Rosh Hashanah. CyberShabot Shalom!

New Sony Cybershots, HP Photosmarts,

Sony_DSC-T3.jpg imageGott im Himmel, ze cameras! There have been like two dozen new cameras announced in the last few weeks as various manufacturers start ramping up for Christmas, and Sony and HP are no exception. Among the new Sonys announced today are two pocket-sized beauties that I want right now: the T3, an update to the T1 and Japan-only T11, a 5.1-megapixel camera that is Sony's thinnest at less than three-quarters of an inch; and the DSC-L1, a candy bar 4.1-megapixel unit that is only 3.75-inches long. Just when I was ready to buy a new camera Sony has to muck it all up with at least two that really do it for me. Oh, and there's also the new DSC-V3, a 7-megapixel unit that looks mighty fine, as well.

The HPs, well, they are okay, but I'll be honest, they don't get me all riled up as much as the two featherweight cameras from Sony do. If they fixed the middling image quality of the T1 in the T3, that may be my next sidearm. Living Room has a bunch of the press releases, and I'll add to this post if any more info comes through during the day.

While Sony Tries To Become Apple,
Samsung Tries To Become Sony
05/13/2004 03:41 AM
Has anyone noticed that it's becoming increasingly difficult to tell Samsung from Sony? It appears that almost everything Sony does, Samsung does as well. So, it's really no surprise that a little over a month after Sony announced plans to build out retail stores more for advertising than for sales, Samsung plans to do the same thing. Of course, while Sony says they're more interested in using the stores for advertising, Samsung has gone one step further. They believe so strongly that this "store" is just for advertising that they won't sell you anything at the store. It's for showcasing products only. Also, a random note in the article, but the same week that Sony and Nintendo announced their plans for their next generation handheld gaming devices, this article also mentions that Samsung is planning for its own N-Gage like phone/gaming device. Apparently, the dismal failure of the N-Gage isn't enough to scare them off.
